Instructions to Authors

Instructions to Authors

1.- Introduction
"Grasas y Aceites" is a quaterly Journal of scientific and technical information that publishes original articles (papers), notes (short papers) and informative articles (reviews, up-dates) on fats, oils, oleaginous seeds and fruits, surfactants, table olives, and similar products.

2.- Presentation
Manuscripts, (original and two complete copies) correctly written in Spanish or English, should be sent to:

                                     GRASAS Y ACEITES
                                     Instituto de la Grasa (CSIC)
                                     Avda. Padre Garc韆 Tejero, 4
                                     41012 - SEVILLA (Espa馻)

Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original, unpublished work, and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

3.- Manuscript
The manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of the sheet, A-4 (21 x 29,7 cm), leaving wide margins on each side (2.5 to 3 cm). All pages should be numbered consecutively beginning with the title page.

The first page should have only the title of the paper, the names of the authors, and the names and addresses of the contributing centres. The author for correspondence should be indicated with an asterisk.

The second page should repeat the title, followed by a brief abstract of the paper and a list of 3 to 6 key-words. Next should be the correct version in English of the title, abstract and key-words.

The following pages are for the text of the article up to a maximum of 20 pages, without counting tables and figures, which should be on separate sheets.

The notes or short papers should have a maximum of four typed pages and two tables or figures.

4.- Title
The title should be concise and informative, accurately reflecting the content of the article. Abbreviations, parenthesis, formulas and uncommon typographic characters should be avoided wherever possible.

5.- Summary
The article should be preceded by a summary in Spanish and English not exceeding 150 words, (50-100 in short papers), written in third person, and avoiding repetition of the title. It should inform concisely and clearly the objective, methodology, and results of the research.

The authors should appreciate that the abstract will probably be the only part of the article accessible to the majority of readers by way of data bases and other scientific information services.

6.- Key-words (Descriptors)
The authors should suggest three to six key-words, which identify the most important subject-matter dealt with in the work.

The proposed key-words may be changed on the judgement of the Editorial Board in accordance with the key-word thesaurus of the Journal.

7.-Text
Papers should be as concise as possible, and the bibliography reduced to the minimum, directly related to the work done. The text should be divided into those parts necessary for clarity and order. It is recommended that full-papers have the following sections: Introduction, Experimental, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements (if necessary), and Bibliography. The tables, figures and figure legends should be on separate sheets not included in the text.

The Introduction should be as brief as possible, setting out concrete antecedents, objectives followed, and reasons for carrying out the work. Explicit references to other publications should be made only if their knowledge is essential for understanding the text.

The ExperimentalPart should not contain more than the necessary information to permit reproduction of the experiments. The use of headings is advised to describe samples, apparatus, reagents, and methods used.

The Results should be set out concisely in the form of tables or figures, which should contain sufficient information to justify the conclusions.

The Discussion should emphasize the significance of the new results and, if possible, attempt to relate them with known facts.

8.- Bibliography
Citation of authors in the text should appear in the form "Wilson (1986)" or "(Wilson, 1986)", using "a", "b", etc., if more than one reference for any year for the same author(s), e.g. Smith (1975a,b).

The full list of references should be typed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. It must include the following data:

Journal articles: Surname and initials of all the authors, year of publication (including the corresponding letter if it has been used in the text) in parenthesis, title of the article, abbreviated title (in italic) of the journal according to Chemical Abstracts, volume and first and last page numbers.
Example:
Albi, T., Lanz髇, A., Cert, A. y Aparicio, R. (1990). Valores de eritrodiol en muestras de aceite de oliva virgenes andaluces. Grasas y Aceites ,41, 167-170.

Books: Surname and initials of all the authors, year of publication in parenthesis, title, edition number (if necessary), publisher and place of edition.
Example:
Lee, F.A. (1983) Basic Food Chemistry, 2nd Ed. The AVI Publishing Co. Inc., Westport. (Conn).

Chapters in books: Surname and initials of all the authors, year of publication in parenthesis, title of the chapter, title of the book (in italic), volume and edition (if necessary), initial and last page, editor publisher and place of edition.
Example:
Christensen, C.M. (1984). Food Texture Perception in Advances in Food Research , Vol 29, pp. 159-185. C.O. Chichester, (Ed). Academic Press Inc., Orlando.

Patents : Surname and initials of all the authors, title, country, number and date (in parenthesis).
Example:
Waite, J.H. Purifying and stabilizing cathecol-containing proteins and materials obtained by this method. U.S. Patent N?4.496.397 (29.1.85).

9.- Symbols, units, and nomenclature
The author should in general follow the rules of the Syst鑝e International d'Unit鑣 (SI) in respect of the units used and their symbols. To facilitate printing, the names of Greek letters and other special symbols should be explained in the margin when they appear for the first time. It should be remembered that the symbols of units are the same in singular and plural, and should not be followed by a full-stop, except at the end of a sentence.

Chemical nomenclature should follow as closely as possible the IUPAC rules.

Abbreviations should be included in parentheses following the complete expression when appearing in the text for the first time. Thereafter the abbreviation should be used.

10.- Tables and figures
The results should be presented in figures and tables, but not in both forms at the same time.

The number of graphs should be limited as much as possible. In general, the juxtaposition of lines referring to the same coordinate system is recommended so that clarity is not reduced.

The tables and figures should be numbered in the order they appear in the text. Roman numerals should be used for the tables, and Arabic for the figures. Both the tables and figures should be on sheets of the same size as the manuscript, separate from the main body of the text, and with sufficient explanatory key for their easy understanding without the need to consult the text.

All the tables and figures should be cited in the manuscript, and the approximate position of each should be indicated in the margin.

In general, both tables and figures should be of sufficient size and quality to allow direct reproduction from the original by reduction.

The figures (graphs, diagrams, chemical structures, complex mathematical expressions, etc.) should be drawn in Indian ink on tracing paper, A4 (21 x 29,7 cm). Their dimensions must be such that in reduction (to 8, 12, or 16 cm width), the labelling and subject matter of the figures remain clear and legible, which means that the height of the reduced letters is not less that 1 mm. Therefore, and according to the level of reduction, it is advisable to draw the letters and numbers from 3 to 4 mm in height, with a thickness of 0.3 to 0.5 mm. The lines should be from 0.4 to 0.6 mm thick according to their relative importance. Chemical formulae which include the use of broken lines or cycles should be drawn such that in reduction the sides remain from 4 to 5 mm long. All labels in the figures should be written in Indian ink, never typed. Figures can also be written in a good enough resolution electronic printing machine.

Photographs should be on glossy white paper, with the greatest contrast possible.

The figures and photographs should be identified by their order number on the same sh
