Introduction
‘Research in Complementary and Classical Natural Medicine’ is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes articles written in German or English on basic research, clinical studies, methodology or scientific theory in complementary medicine.
General Information and Publishing Rights
Manuscripts for publication should be submitted in quadruplicate (accompanied by one complete set of the original figures and tables as well as 3 copies) to the scientific office:
S. Karger GmbH Ellen Zimmermann P.O. Box D–79095 Freiburg (Germany)
Authors should always keep a copy of the manuscript.
In a covering letter all authors must confirm with their signature that the submitted paper or parts of it (with the exception of congress reports) has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
All authors have to confirm that they have read the manuscript and agree to have it published in the submitted form.
It is the authors?responsibility to obtain permission from other publishers to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc.
Acceptance of a manuscript is based on the evaluation by several reviewers (peer review).
Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, all usage rights are retained by the publisher. The assignment of the usage rights applies to all print media as well as electronic offline and online media, including the internet and data bases/data carriers of any kind. The publication, or parts of it, may neither be translated into other languages nor reproduced by any mechanical or electronic means (including photocopying, recording, and microfilm) nor stored in a retrieval system without the publisher抯 written permission.
Ethical and Legal Prerequisites: Manuscripts involving examinations of probands and patients must include a statement that the trial protocol has been approved by an ethics committee and thus meets the standards of the Declaration of Helsinki in its revised version of 1975 and its amendments made in 1983, 1989, and 1996 [JAMA 1997;277:925–926].
Accordingly, the proband抯 informed consent has to be included in the manuscript. Information suitable to reveal the proband抯 identity is to be avoided.
Experiments involving animals demand consent as well and must meet the requirements of German laws for the protection of animals in their current version. A reference to this approval must be included in the manuscript. Articles from countries other than Germany must include a comparable note.
Reports on Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) should be prepared according to the CONSORT statement [Begg C, Cho M, Eastwood S, Horton S, Moher D, Olki I, Pitkin R, Rennie D, Schulz F, Simel D, Stroup D: Improving the quality of reporting of randomized trials: The CONSORT statement. JAMA 1996;276:637–639].
The report must state explicitly how the comparison groups were assembled, allowing the reader to access the method of randomization.
Please specify in the title and summary that the manuscript is a report on an RCT. When an RCT is submitted, the authors should refer to the ‘Checklist for Authors Submitting Randomized Controlled Trials’ reprinted in the guidelines of the first issue of a volume. Checklist and flow diagram are also available at http://www.consort-statement.org. Both should be submitted with the manuscript, as they will be included in the review process.

Preparation of Manuscripts
Please print the manuscript 1½-spaced with 3-cm margins (left and right).
Original articles should not exceed 10 printed pages (1 printed page equals 3 manuscript pages). Short communications of scientific results should not exceed 3 printed pages. Each additional complete or partial page to print will be charged to the author.
Please check the final copy carefully for consistent terminology and correct spelling. Accepted manuscripts are edited according to the publisher’s style.
General information for the preparation of manuscripts may be found in ‘Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals’ by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors as published in Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36–47 (available at http://jama.ama-assn.org/info/auinst_req.html).
Electronic Manuscript Submission: The final version of the manuscript must be accompanied by a data carrier exactly matching the printed version. Please see ‘Guidelines for Electronic Manuscript Submission’ for assistance in preparing manuscripts on data media.
Arrangement
All pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page.
Articles should be structured as follows: Key Words and Summary, Schlüsselwörter and Zusammenfassung, Introduction, Material and Methods (optionally Patients and Methods), Results, Discussion, optionally Acknowledgements, References, tables, figure legends, and figures.
The title page must include the following information: Title and short title in English and German, each author抯 full name, followed by his respective affiliation; exact postal address of the corresponding author including phone and fax numbers as well as e-mail address.
Original articles must contain an English and a German structured summary (translation by the editor is possible). For more information on how to structure a summary see Haynes RB, Mulrow CD, Huth EJ, Altman DG, Gardner MJ: Ann Intern Med 1990;113:69–76. The summary should not exceed 250 words in five paragraphs: Background, Objective, Material and Methods, Results, Conclusions. Summaries should not include any references, tables, figures, or references to figures and tables. If it is inevitable to cite a reference, complete publication data must be given.
Each article must have 3–5 key words (English and German). If possible, use terms from the ‘Medical Subject Headings List’ (MeSH) of Index Medicus (www.nlm.nih.gov).
Other contributions do not adhere to the framework of original articles; however, title page, summary, key words, and a list of references are necessary.
Footnotes should be used only in tables.
Please use abbreviations as economically as possible. When using uncommon abbreviations, spell out the term in full at the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, e.g. adenosine monophosphate (AMP).
When first mentioned, registered trade names must be marked with the superscript registration symbol ® or ™. It is the sole responsibility of the author to ensure that this rule is followed properly.
Acknowledgements should be placed directly after the text and before the list of references.
Figures and tables are listed in the text as (fig. 1) and (table 1). Data explained in tables and figures need not be repeated in the text. Figure legends must be listed together on a separate page. Figure and table legends should be kept short and precise.
Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense. Each one is charged to the author at EUR 235.– as a contribution to the additional reproduction and color printing costs.
Figures should be submitted in quadruplicate, 1 original and 3 copies. Please mark on the back the first author抯 name, a short form of the title, the 憈op?instruction, and the number of the figure. The quality of the illustrations printed depends on the quality of the originals provided.
Reference
The list of references should include only the publications cited in the text.
References must be numbered sequentially in the order cited in the text. In the text identify references by Arabic numerals in square brackets.
In each reference all authors should be named; the abbreviation ‘et al.’ is to be avoided.
It is recommended to quote only articles already published or accepted for publication. Please avoid ‘in preparation’ or ‘personal communication’.
Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct citation.
Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus system (www.nlm.nih.gov).

Galley Proofs
The edited manuscript and the galley proofs are forwarded to the corresponding author together with a reprint order form.
The author is asked to check the galleys against the manuscript and to mark necessary corrections in the galley proofs.
Correspondence regarding accepted manuscripts and proofs should be directed to the publisher S. Karger GmbH, Freiburg.
Costs and Reprints
Corrections to the galley proofs resulting in expenses of more than 10% of the original typesetting costs will be charged to the author.
If a paper exceeds the allotted size and is not abridged by the author, each additional printed page is charged to the author at EUR 335.–.
The corresponding author receives 25 reprints free of charge.
Guidelines for Electronic Submission of Manuscripts
The final version of the manuscript must be accompanied by a data carrier exactly matching the printed version. Check the data carrier with a virus detection program. Do not use programs for file compression. Label the data carrier with the title of the manuscript, the first author, the platform, and the software used (including version number). We accept data carriers in Macintosh or MS-Windows format. Use the standard document mode of your word-processing program (preferably MS Word). If a non-Western version of the word-processing program is used to prepare the manuscript, save the text in the rich-text format (RTF). The following word-processing packages are currently acceptable: Macintosh: any program; MS-Word (including Word 2002) and Word Perfect (up to version 6.0). In the file do not include any layout instructions such as placements for graphics. The text should be justified to the left, and end-of-line hyphenation should be avoided. Use carriage returns only to end heading and paragraphs, not to break lines of text.
Use only one format (normal) for the document; to structure the text you may use tabs. Please do not include any headers, footers, or footnotes.
Ensure that all characters are correctly represented throughout the manuscript: e.g., 1 (one) and l (letter), 0 (zero) and O (letter), X (letter) and x (multiplication sign).
Insert only one space after a period and none before it.
Please save tables and figures each as separate files, do not integrate them in the text.
Figures: Graphics, e.g. figures, schemes, should be saved as separate files. In case of line drawings the resolution of the figure must be at least 600 dpi, in case of half-tone and color images 300 dpi are sufficient. Most graphic packages will allow the user to choose a format in which to save a file. JPG files in appropriate resolution are preferred. It should be possible to identify the figure by the file name. All figures must be submitted additionally as camera-ready copies.
References: Use the style as described in the general reference section above, i.e., no comma after the last name, no period after the initials. The semicolon and colon after the year of publication and the volume number, respectively, should not be followed by spaces. Please give the first and the last page of the article, separated by a dash. Wrong: Forsch. Komplementärmed., 1997; 6: 344 – 7 Correct: Forsch Komplementärmed 1997;6:344–347
