    Types of contribution

    1.       Original research papers (regular papers)

    2.       Review articles

    3.       Preliminary communications

    4.       Case reports

    5.       Book reviews

Review articles and preliminary communications (where brief accounts of important new work may be announced with less delay than is inevitable with major papers) may be accepted after correspondence with the appropriate editor. Case reports will be accepted only if they contain some important new information for the readers.

    Preparation of manuscripts

    1.       Manuscripts should be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to have their manuscripts checked for style, syntax and grammar prior to submission.

    2.       Articles should be submitted in triplicate, each copy being complete in all respects, as two copies are sent to referees.

    3.       The text should be typed in double-spacing on consecutively numbered pages of uniform size, preferable A4. Every page of the manuscript, including the title page, references, tables, etc. should be numbered.

    4.       Manuscripts in general should be organized in the following order:
Title (should be clear, descriptive and not too long)
    Name(s) of author(s)
    Complete postal address(es) of affiliations
Telephone, fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author
Abstract, which should be clear, descriptive and not longer than 400 words
    Keywords, normally 3-6 items
    Introduction
    Material studied, methods, techniques
    Results
    Discussion
    Conclusion
    Acknowledgment
    References

    5.       Elsevier reserve the privilege of returning to the author for revision accepted manuscripts and illustrations which are not in the proper form given in this guide.

    Tables

Authors should take notice of the limitations set by the size and layout of the journal. Tables should be typed in double spacing on separate sheets, and numbered according to their sequence in the text. The text should include references to all tables.

    Illustrations

It is most important that one set of illustrations must be submitted in a form suitable for direct reproduction. Line drawings should be in Indian ink on tracing or drawing paper. Photographs should be clear, black and white prints on glossy paper. Colour can only be used by special arrangement with the Managing Editor and at the author's expense. Photocopies of original drawings (but not of photographs) may be supplied with the second and third copies for the reviewers. All illustrations must be accompanied by suitable legends typed in double spacing on a separate sheet.

    References

These should be numbered in the order in which they are cited (using square brackets in the text) and listed in numerical order on a separate sheet. This journal should be cited as Forensic Sci. Int. References to journals, books and multi-author volumes should accord with the following examples:

[1.] M. Ansell, F.A.S. Lewis, A review of cyanide concentrations found in human organs. J. Forensic Med. 17 (1970) 148-155.

[2.] N.C. Masters, H.A. Shapiro, Medical Secrecy and the Doctor - Patient Relationship, A.A. Belhema, Cape Town, 1966. p. 31.

[3.] P. Chovin, Gas chromatography, in: M. Florkin, E.H. Stotz (Eds.), Comprehensive Biochemistry, vol. 4, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1962, pp. 223-246.

    Multiple authorship

On submission, all authors of the paper listed should sign a letter in which they state that they all have participated sufficiently in the conception and design of the work, in the analysis of the data and in writing the manuscript to take public responsibility for it.

    Proofs

One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding authors as given on the title page of the manuscript. These proofs should be returned by fax or express post within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections must be limited to typographical errors only.

    Reprints

Fifty reprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies may be ordered at prices shown on the order form which accompanies the proofs.

    Electronic manuscripts

Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, hardcopies are sufficient. For the processing of accepted papers, electronic versions are preferred. After final acceptance, your disk plus two, final and exactly matching printed versions should be submitted together. Double density (DD) or high density (HD) diskettes (3½ or 5¼ inch) are acceptable. It is important that the file saved is in the native format of the wordprocessor program used. Label the disk with the name of the computer and wordprocessing package used, your name, and the name of the file on the disk. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.
