About the journal

Food and Agricultural Immunology presents original immunological research with food, agricultural, environmental and veterinary applications. The primary focus of the journal is on research exploiting antibodies and the immune response with food and agricultural applications. The journal also welcomes papers directed towards understanding interactions at the interface of the food and immune systems. Submission of relevant review articles and short papers containing 'exceptional' preliminary information is also encouraged.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Food and Agricultural Immunology presents original immunological research with food, agricultural, environmental and veterinary applications. The journal focuses primarily on research exploiting antibodies and the immune response with food and agricultural applications, and also publishes papers directed towards understanding interactions at the interface of the food and immune systems.

Manuscripts to be considered for publication should be submitted to Dr M. R. A. Morgan, Institute of Food Research, Norwich Laboratory, Norwich Research Park, Colney, Norwich, NR4 7UA, UK. Tel: 0113 233 2966; Fax: 0113 233 2959. Three categories of paper will be considered for publication in Food and Agricultural Immunology: review articles, original articles and short communications. Authors who wish to submit review articles are advised to consult the Editor before preparing their manuscripts.

Short communications will report three kinds of work: (i) preliminary results of importance that justify presentation in advance of a more detailed investigation; (ii) data that essentially confirm existing knowledge but do not justify an extensive presentation; and (iii) short case reports. The text of short communications should not exceed 750 words, and the summary should not exceed 50 words. There should be no more than two figures or tables. Three complete typed copies of manuscripts should be submitted, and an additional copy retained by the author. They should be typed on one side of paper, double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution and name(s) of the author(s). The full postal address, telephone and fax number, and e-mail, if available, of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. The normal convention is to adopt -ize spellings (e.g. characterize, synthesize, etc.). An abstract of 100-150 words should be included. Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Tables and captions must be typed out on separate sheets and grouped together, and not included as part of the text. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals, and labelled (a), (b), etc., where appropriate. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Figures should include keys to symbols.

Figures and line drawings must have a title legend and be drawn on separate sheets. Figures will be redrawn by the Publisher if necessary, although authors are requested to supply original artwork suitable for printing wherever possible. Photographs should be sharp, high contrast, glossy prints; they should be submitted in their final size. Micrographs and drawings of micro-organisms should include a statement of magnification, which will be altered appropriately if the micrographs are reduced in size for printing.

References in the text should be restricted to those with a direct bearing upon the findings and should be given thus: Skerritt and Hill (1990) or (Skerritt & Hill, 1990). A reference by three or more authors should be identified in the text only by the first author followed by et al. and the date. Where several references are quoted consecutively in the text, the order should be chronological, or, within a year, alphabetical (by first author or, if necessary, by first and second authors). Where references are made to several papers by the same author(s) in the same year, the date should be followed by a, b, c, etc. References should be listed alphabetically by author at the end of the manuscript. For each author, publications should be grouped into (1) single author papers, (2) two author papers, subdivided into groups alphabetically by second author, and (3) three or more author papers. Within each group and subgroup, publications should be ordered chronologically. Journal titles should be cited in full, while for books the name of the publisher should precede the place of publication thus:

Books, monographs: GODING, J. W. (1986) Monoclonal Antibodies: Principles and Practice, 2nd edn, Academic Press, London.

Multi-author volumes: KEMP, H. A., ARCHER, D. B. & MORGAN, M. R. A. (1988) The specific analysis of methanogenic bacteria used in the fermentation of food waste, in Immunoassays for Veterinary and Food Analysis (MORRIS, B. A., CLIFFORD, M. N. & JACKMAN, R., Eds), Elsevier, Barking, pp. 143-149.

Journal articles: RAM, B. P., HART, L. P., SHOTWELL, O. L. & PESTKA, J. J. (1986) Enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay of aflaxtoxin B1, in naturally contaminated corn and cottonseed, Association of Official Analytical Chemists' Journal, 69, 904-907.

Units, chemical nomenclature, etc.: Sizes and quantities should be expressed in Syst鑝e Internationale (SI) units wherever possible (e.g. mg 1-1, not mg/1). For solutions and mixtures, w/v and v/v should always be specified, where appropriate. Names of simple chemicals should conform as far as possible with modern systematic usage. The 'Index Guide' of Chemical Abstracts is a good source of information concerning chemical names. Full details of suppliers of chemicals must be given.

Proofs will be sent to authors and should be corrected and returned within three days. Major alterations or revisions cannot be accepted.

Offprints are supplied free of charge up to 50 copies. Additional copies may be ordered for purchase when proofs are returned. The offprints, together with a complete copy of the relevant journal issue, are sent about three weeks after publication.
