Recognizing that research in human biology must be founded on a comparative knowledge of our closest relatives, this journal is the natural scientist's ideal means of access to the best of current primate research. 'Folia Primatologica' covers fields as diverse as molecular biology and social behaviour, and features articles on ecology, conservation, palaeontology, systematics and functional anatomy. In-depth articles and invited reviews are contributed by the world's leading primatologists. In addition, special issues provide rapid peer-reviewed publication of conference proceedings. Submission
Papers can be accepted from any area of primatology, including behaviour, evolutionary biology, morphology, physiology and palaeontology. However, only papers of high quality and with an extensive evolutionary or comparative perspective can be considered. Papers of more technical or factual content will only be considered if they are of unusual and immediate interest, such as discoveries of new species.
Two types of paper can be accepted for publication: (1) Brief Reports; (2) standard research papers. All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.
Brief reports should be no more than 1,250 words long (4 manuscript pages including tables, illustrations and references) and are not sent to independent reviewers in order to ensure rapid publication.
Standard papers, which should normally not exceed 5,000 words, are sent to independent reviewers.
Only original papers written in English, German or French are considered. Papers written in English should use UK English (that is British or International English) and follow spelling in The Oxford English Dictionary, except for authors in North American institutions, who may use US English if desired.
Manuscripts should be sent to:
Dr. R.H. Crompton S. Karger AG Editorial Office ‘Folia Primatologica’ P.O. Box CH–4009 Basel (Switzerland) Tel. +41 61 306 1357 Fax +41 61 306 1434 E-mail fpr@karger.ch
Mailing address for courier deliveries only:
Allschwilerstr. 10 CH–4055 Basel (Switzerland)
Manuscripts should be submitted fourfold (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original), typewritten double-spaced on one side of the paper, with a wide margin. E-mail submissions are welcome. Manuscripts must be prepared according to the specifications for disk submission (see next page) and forwarded as an e-mail attachement to the editorial office: fpr@karger.ch
We are very conscious of the need to shorten turnaround times to the minimum. In order to do so, and in fairness to other authors, we must ask authors to return revised manuscripts to us within two months of receipt of the reviewers?comments and editor抯 decision letter. If this is not possible, it is essential for authors to notify us in writing of any delay, with reasons for the delay, within these time limits.
Ethical Guidelines
慒olia Primatologica?requires that all papers reporting field studies in which animals have been trapped, darted or otherwise handled, and papers reporting studies of captive animals, other than purely observational ones, should include in the text a clear statement of the justification for any animal contact and/or invasive procedures.
When animals are euthanised at the end of experiments, justification in terms of a clear benefit to the health or well-being of humans and/or non-human primates is essential, even in abstracts.
Conditions
All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.
Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance.
Accepted papers become the permanent property of 慒olia Primatologica?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.
It is the author抯 responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.
Arrangement
Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. A count of the number of words in the manuscript, including main text, references and legends for figures and tables should be given.
Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.
Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 6–10 key words in English is essential.
Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 10 lines in English. Brief Reports should not have abstracts.
Footnotes: Avoid footnotes as far as possible. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page.
Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 144 x 196 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author抯 name, and 憈op?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and colour illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800–1200 dpi.
Colour Illustrations
Up to 6 colour illustrations per page can now be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.– / USD 545.00 per page. Colour illustrations are reproduced at the author抯 expense.
References Note: Change in Format
In the text, give author抯 name and date of publication in brackets, with et al. for three or more authors. Multiple references should be listed chronologically. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically (except that two-authored papers are listed before multi-authored papers with the same first author) and should include only those publications cited in the text. Work accepted for publication may be listed as 慽n press? 慤npublished observations?or 憄ersonal communications?cited in the text should not be listed in the references.

Galley Proofs
Unless indicated otherwise, galley proofs are sent to the first-named author and should be returned with the least possible delay. Alterations made in galley proofs, other than the correction of printer抯 errors, are charged to the author. No page proofs are supplied.
