Instructions to Authors

1. Your manuscript must contain information interesting for the readers of Folia Microbiologica. It should be clear, concise, free of repetitions and ambiguities. Its extent should not exceed 10 printed pages (including tables and figures), except with reviews.

2. Before submitting a manuscript examine carefully a recent issue of Folia Microbiologica and observe the general format and layout, especially regarding the title page, references, tables, subheadings, footnotes, abbreviations, etc.

3. Manuscripts (paginated) may be submitted in two forms:
(a) on a floppy disk using a MS Word, WordPerfect (or T602 in Czech and Slovak Republics) editor in the MS-DOS or Windows format, left justified without any additional formatting of the text (fonts, characters, paragraphs, pages); an exception will be italics in scientific terms in accordance with international usage; do not divide words at end of line;
(b) as a typescript.

4. If a floppy disk (diskette) is submitted, it should be accompanied by two printed copies, including tables (these need not be included on the disk if it should present unsurmountable difficulties for the author), plus two sets of figures.

5. If a typewritten manuscript is submitted it must be typed double-spaced throughout on A4-size sheets of paper (210 ?nbsp;297 mm) using either an electric typewriter with a carbon ribbon or a laser or inkjet printer. Two copies of all material are required.

6. Strict adherence to the SI (Systeme International) units should be observed and appropriate publications on symbols and abbreviations in the field should be consulted. Words or symbols to be set in italics should either be typed as such or underlined. Normal parentheses, ( ), not the slash or solidus, /, should be used.

7. The general layout of the article should be: ABSTRACT of no more than 250 words; (introduction with no heading); MATERIALS  AND  METHODS; RESULTS; DISCUSSION (or RESULTS  AND  DISCUSSION); REFERENCES. The last-named should be written according to the following example in the alphabetical order.

Baldwin T.O., Holzman T.F., Holzman R.B.: Active center-based immunoassay approach using bacterial luciferase. Methods Enzymol. 133, 248-264 (1986).
Chee M. Jr.: Enzymic multiplex DNA sequencing. Nucl.Acids Res. 19, 3301-3305 (1991).
Kushner S.R.: An improved method for transformation of Escherichia coli with ColE1 derived plasmids, pp. 17-23 in H.W. Boyer,
S. Nicosia (Eds): Genetic Engineering. Elsevier, Amsterdam 1978.
Watson J.D.,
Hopkins N.H., Roberts J.W., Steitz J.A., Weiner A.M.: Molecular Biology of the Gene, 4th ed., Vol. 1. Benjamin/Cummings, Menlo Park 1987.

8. Tables should be submitted:
(a)  in an electronic form - preferably in the Table processor MS Excel 4.0 and higher versions or compatible processors; if necessary, table modules of text editors mentioned in paragraph 3 can also be accepted; two printed copies must accompany this form of submission;
(a)  in type-written form - on separate sheets.

9. Line drawings should be submitted together with unequivocal and brief description of axes (usually a symbol of the quantity plotted and/or units). The figures will be redrawn before printing. All longer explanations should be included in the legend. Type the legends to figures collectively on a separate page.

10. Photographs should be of high contrast and the highest quality possible. They should be submitted as glossy prints preferably in the final size, in no case larger than 250 ?nbsp;200 mm. The first author's name should be written in soft pencil on the reverse of the photograph. With microphotographs please specify the magnification; the editors will provide the scale bar accordingly. Likewise, do not describe parts of a composite figure or objects in a photograph directly but do so in the legend. The editors will provide the appropriate descriptions.

11. The receipt of the manuscript will be acknowledged by the editorial office within a week of its receipt. After review by two referees you will receive the comments on the paper and advice of immediate acceptance, acceptance after revision, or rejection of the paper. The authors will receive 2 reprints free of charge.
