About the journal

Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica was established in 1963 under the title: "Folia Histochemica et Cytochemica" by the Polish Histochemical and Cytochemical Society as an international, English-language journal devoted to the rapidly developing fields of histochemistry and cytochemistry. In 1984, the profile of the journal was broadened to accommodate papers dealing with cell and tissue biology, and the title was accordingly changed to "Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica".

Since 1963, the Editorial Office has been located in Cracow, in association with the Jagiellonian University Medical College (formerly Medical Academy).

The previous Editors-in-Chief were:
1963-1976: Prof. Jozef Niwelinski, Dept. Histochemistry and Cell Biology;
1977-1992: Prof. Jozef Kaluza, Dept. Neuropathology.

Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica (ISSN 0239-8508) is published quarterly, one volume a year, by the Polish Histochemical and Cytochemical Society and Foundation for Cell Biology and Molecular Biology, at Vesalius University Medical Publishing, Wislisko 1, 31-538 Cracow, Poland.

Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica publishes review articles, original articles, short communications, proceedings of scientific congresses/symposia and book reviews. Fields of particular interests include:

  • development and application of modern techniques in histochemistry and cell biology
  • cell biology and pathology
  • Instructions to Authors

Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica accepts manuscripts (original articles, short communications, review articles) from the field of histochemistry, as well as cell and tissue biology. Each manuscript is reviewed by two independent referees. Book reviews and information concerning congresses, symposia, meetings etc., are also published.

The manuscripts should be sent to any of the following editors and coeditors:
    (1) J.A. Litwin, Editorial Office, Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica, POB 843, 30-960 Kraków, Poland
    (2) Z. Darzynkiewicz, Brander Cancer Research Institute, New York Medical College, 19 Bradhurst Avenue, Hawthorne, NY 10532, USA
    (3) A. Hinek, Division of Cardiovascular Research, Hospital for Sick Children, 555 University Avenue, Toronto, Canada M5G 1X8
    (4) M.Z. Ratajczak, Director, Stem Cell Biology Program, 418 JG Brown Cancer Center, University of Louisville, 529 South Jackson St., Louisville, KY 40202, USA
    (5) J.P. Robinson, Purdue University Cytometry Laboratories, 1515 Hansen Hall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1515, USA

The manuscript must be accompanied by the author's statement that it has not been published (or submitted to publication) elsewhere. The authors are also requested to include the names and addresses of four persons outside their institutions who are qualified to review the manuscript.

Manuscripts (exclusively in English) and illustrations should be submitted in triplicate. In case of micrographs, (1) glossy originals and 2 sets of laser (not xerox) copies or (2) CD and 3 sets of high quality computer printouts are accepted. Double-spaced typing and at least 2 cm margins are required. The final version of the manuscript should be accompanied by a diskette with the text edited using any PC-compatible word processor. The length of the manuscript (incl. abstract, tables, references and legends to figures) cannot exceed 40, 20 and 5 typed pages for review article, original article and short communication, respectively. The manuscript will be destroyed after publication, unless its return is requested.

The first page must include: the title; name(s) of author(s); affiliation(s); short running head (no more than 60 characters incl. spaces); a detailed address for correspondence including e-mail.

Organization of the manuscript: (1) Abstract (not exceeding one typed page); (2) Key words - max. 10; (3) Introduction; (4) Materials and methods; (5) Results; (6) Discussion; (7) Acknowledgements (if any); (8) References; (9) Tables (with legends); (10) Figures; (11) Legends to figures. In a short communication, Results and discussion should be written jointly. Organization of a review article is free.

References at the end of the text should be listed alphabetically and numbered in square brackets according to the following examples:

References in the text should appear only in a form of the respective numbers in square brackets.

The authors are requested to plan their illustrations in such a way that the printed area is economically used. Numbers, inscriptions and abbreviations on the figures (instant lettering recommended) must be about 3 mm high. In case of micrographs, magnification (e.g. X 65 000) should be given in the legend. Calibration bars can also be used. Illustrations in the electronic form (on CDs) are also accepted, preferably in .ps or .tif formats, otherwise please specify the software used. Color illustrations can be published only at author's cost and the cost estimate will be sent to the author after submission of the manuscript.
