Fluid Dynamics Research The aim of Fluid Dynamics Research is to publish original and creative works in all fields of fluid dynamics. In addition to regular papers, brief communications and comments are published and review papers of high quality are invited. The scope includes theoretical, numerical and experimental studies that contribute to the fundamental understanding and/or application of fluid phenomena.

Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published and that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication. Brief communications are short reports of new important results and should be within six printed pages in length. Comments are publications that criticize or correct papers of other authors previously published in Fluid Dynamics Research. Each comment should state clearly the paper to which it refers. A reply to a comment must also conform to these requirements Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published and that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication. Manuscript preparation Manuscripts should be written in English and typed with double spacing on one side of the page only with widemargins. The title should be brief and concise. The title page should include a footnote indicating the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent stating his full name, academic or professional affiliation, address, tel. no., fax and e-mail. The body of the manuscript should be preceded by an abstract of 150 words or less. Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Article title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, Classification codes (PACS amd/or MSC) and keywords, Maintext, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables. Tables should bear a short descriptive title and should be typed on separate sheets, including legends. References to published literature should be quoted in the text as follows: (Taylor 1950 b) or . . . Karman (1921). Lists of references at the end of each paper should be arranged in alphabetical order. Classification codes/keywords. Please supply one to four classification codes PACS-1996 or MSC and 6-8 keywords of your own choice for indexing purposes. All mathematical symbols which are not typewritten should be specified and listed separately. Unusual symbols or notations should be identified in the margins. Uncommon mathematical notations which require special typesetting procedures must be avoided. The numbers identifying displayed mathematical expressions should be placed in parentheses at the right margin.
Illustrations Illustrations should accompany the manuscript on separate sheets,in a form suitable for photographic reproduction and reduction. Line drawings must be of high contrastand carefully lettered. The lettering as well as the essential details should have proportionate dimensions so as to be legible after reduction. Each figure should have a number and a caption; the captions should be collected on a separate sheet. Colour plates: Illustrations can be printed in colour when they are judged by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. The Publisher and the Author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information concerning colour illustrations and the cost to the author is available from the Publisher.
Proofs Authors should keep a copy of their manuscripts as proofs will be sent to them 4-6 weeks after acceptance, without manuscript. Proofs will usually be printed on low quality paper. Please note that the proofs have been proofread by the Publisher and only a cursory check by the author is needed; we are unable to accept changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript at this stage. In order to guarantee the fastest possible production times, the proofs must be returned within 48 hours after receipt, preferably by fax. All papers are subjected to refereeing, and in case a paper cannot be accepted in the form it was submitted, the submitting author will be informed about the referee's comments. Upon acceptance of an article, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Electronic manuscripts The Publisher welcomes the receipt of an electronic version of your accepted manuscript (preferably encoded in LaTeX). If you have not already supplied the final, revised version of your article (on diskette) to the Journal Editor, you are requested herewith to send a file with the text of the accepted manuscript directly to the Publisher by e-mail oron diskette (allowed formats 3.5" or 5.25" MS-DOS, or 3.5" Macintosh) to the address given below. Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the Editor of the journal arepermissible without the prior and explicit approval by the Editor. Such changes should be clearly indicated on an accompanying printout of the file. The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailed instructions to authors) can be obtained using anonymous FTP from the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network(CTAN), or from the Publisher. If sent via electronic mail, files should be accompanied by a clear identification of the article (name of journal, editor's reference number) in the "subject field" of the electronic-mail message. An ASCII table(available from the publisher) should be included in the files, to enable any transmission errors to be detected. The Publisher reserves the right to decide whether to process a manuscript from authors' filesor not. Articles coded in a simple manner with no user-defined macros are most likely to be handled this way.
Author benefits There are no page charges. Costs for extensive alterations in proofs other than printer's errors will, however, be charged to the authors. 50 offprints of each paper will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered atcost.
