Instructions to Authors
Fisheries Science is the official journal of the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science and invites papers in a wide range of research fields related to fisheries science.
Manuscript Submission: Double-spaced manuscripts should be written in English, printed on A4 paper (22 × 28 cm or 21 × 29.7 cm) using a standard font (e.g. Times 12pt) and submitted in duplicate to:
Editor-in-Chief The Japanese Society of Fisheries Science c/o TokyoUniversity of Fisheries 4-5-7 Konan, Minato, Tokyo 108-8477, Japan Tel: 81-3-3471-2165Fax: 81-3-3471-2054 E-mail: fishsci@d1.dion.ne.jp
All pages of the manuscript should be numbered and double spaced. Each manuscript should be submitted with a Contributor's Card, available from our journal and the Editorial Office.
Manuscript Categories Manuscripts may be submitted as Original Articles, Short Papers, or Review Articles. A Short Paper should be a complete and original work which does not merit an Original Article. Short Papers should be no longer than three printed pages (approximately 2000 words). If tables and/or figures accompany the Short Paper, the number of words should be reduced so that the tables and figures can fit within the allocated number of pages. For example, for a table or figure of 8 × 8 cm reduce the number of words by 140. A Review Article may be commissioned, or submitted on topics of current interest. All manuscripts will be submitted to a review process. Manuscripts will be considered for publication only if they have not been published in any language or submitted for publication elsewhere.
Contents

Abstract: The abstract should briefly state the problem, experimental approach, new results and findings, and the final conclusion, which should not exceed 200 words for Original Articles and Review Articles. Short Papers should not include an abstract. Japanese contributors are requested to provide the Japanese Abstract of no more than 300 letters, including title, name(s) of author(s), and abbreviated affiliation(s), which should be printed on a separate sheet.
Key Words: Three to eight descriptive key words should be listed below the abstract. In the case of Short Papers, key words should be listed on the Title Page.
Page 3 and following
Introduction, Material(s) and Method(s), Result(s), Discussion, References, and Figure captions should follow in an unbroken sequence. Acknowledgments should be typed immediately before the references, when necessary. No headings in Short Papers.
Tables and Figures Tables and figures must be numbered and should be referred to as Table l or Fig. 1 etc. Each table should be typed on a separate sheet and be headed by a brief legend. All original figures should be in a finished form ready for reproduction. Photographs should be glossy prints with strong contrasts. Color photographs will be printed in color only at the author's expense. The society will invoice authors for the cost of color work. Each figure should have a short, precise legend. Legends should be listed on a separate sheet(s). For both tables and figures, the desired point of insertion should be marked in the right margin of the text. The authors may be advised to prepare tables and figures using PC packages (see Manuscripts on Disk). Tables and Figures should be printed on A4-sized paper. Illustrations should be either up to 8 cm in width to fit one column or up to 17 cm in width to fit two columns. The submitted figures should be from two to three times the final size to be printed.
References References are indicated in the text by means of numerical superscripts and listed in numerical, not alphabetical, order. Personal communications or unpublished data should be referred to in the text as follows: (Watanabe H, pers. comm., 2000); (Suzuki A & Kato Y, unpubl. data, 2000). The authors must obtain permission to cite the material as a personal communication or unpublished data. Listed references should be complete in all details, including article titles as shown below:

Units and their Abbreviations SI units should be used. Units should be written according to the following examples. The plural `s' should not be added to the abbreviated form of a unit. Examples:
Length Area Volume: pm, nm (mµ should not be used), mm (µ should not be used), mm, cm, m, km, mm2, cm2, m2, L, mL, µL, mm3, cm3, m3
Mass: pg, ng, µg, mg, g, kg, t, Da, kDa
Time: s, min, h; specify the time as [00:00]
Temperature: °C, K (°K should not be used)
Absolute quantity: pmol, nmol, µmol, mmol, mol
Concentration: pM, nM, µM, mM, N, %, p.p.m., µg/kg, mg/l00 mL, mg/l00_g (mg% should not be used)
Work/Energy/Heat quantity: J, erg, cal, kcal
Force: dyn, N, gw, kgw
Pressure: Pa, mmHg, atm, bar
Electricity: V, W, mA, A, Hz
Photometry: cd, lx, lm, cd/m2
Sound: Hz, kHz, mHz, Abar, dB
Speed: cm/s, m/s, kn, rad/s
Radioactivity: dpm, cps, cpm, mBq, Bq, kBq, Gy, kGy, mSv, Sv, R, kR

Gene Loci Concerning genetic nomenclature, the standardized system in Gene Nomenclature for Protein-coding Loci (JB Shaklee et al. Trans. Am. Fish. Soc. 1990; 119: 2-5) should be followed.
Enzymes Where one or more enzyme is regularly referred to in a manuscript, authors should use the recommended (trivial) name with code number (preceded by `RC') given by Nomenclature Committee of International Union of Biochemistry (cf. Enzyme Nomenclature, Recommendations, Academic Press, New York, 1984). Names of enzymes should not be abbreviated except when the substrate has an approved abbreviation (e.g. ATPase).
Nucleotide Sequence It is expected that newly assigned GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession numbers for nucleotide and/or amino acid sequence data will be included in the original manuscript or be inserted when the manuscript is modified. The accession number should be included in a separate paragraph at the end of the Materials and Methods section for full-length papers or at the end of the text for short papers. If conclusions in a manuscript are based on the analysis of sequences and a GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ accession number is not provided at the time of the review, authors may be required to provide the sequence data as a file on a floppy disk. It is expected that when previously published sequence accession numbers are cited in a manuscript, the original citations (e.g. journal articles) will be included in the References section when possible and reasonable. Authors are also expected to do elementary searches and comparisons of nucleotide and amino acid sequences against the sequences in standard databases (e.g. GenBank) immediately before manuscripts are submitted and again at the proof stage.
Manuscripts on Disk Accepted papers should be submitted as formatted text (MS Word or Word Perfect on either Windows or Macintosh) on 3.5" disks. Disks should be PC- or MAC-formatted (1.44 kb). NEC-formatted disks (1.25 kb) cannot be accepted. It is essential that the final version of the hard copy and the file on the disk are identical. Authors should use new/clean disks, rather than reformatted disks, and the disk should contain the relevant files only. Tables, illustrations or photographs may be submitted also on disk with matching hard copy. TIFF files are preferred; Adobe Illustrator, FreeHand or Adobe Photoshop files are also acceptable. Japanese authors should also submit the file of Japanese Abstract on a separate disk. It is essential that the hardware and the word processing package are specified on the disk, as well as the first author's surname, the journal title and the manuscript number. Please specify the machine type, operating system, software and version number used and ensure that the hard copy and the disk version are identical. Do not use any Japanese and Japanese-size special characters on either the manuscript file or the file name.
Registration of DNA Sequences A new DNA sequence(s) described in the article appearing in this journal is requested to be registered in DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ), National Institute of Genetics, Mishima, Japan. A format for this registration is sent from DDBJ directly to the author after the publication.
Proofs and Reprints Page proofs will be sent to the author who submitted the paper. Reprints can be purchased by the author (for cost, see table below).
Page Charges Page charges are necessary in order to partially cover publication costs. The charge per page is ¥7,600 (note: this includes mailing costs from the Society and any necessary English revision). The new page charges will be effective starting from Vol. 69, No. 1. Extra charges will be made for color figures.
Corrections If errors are detected in a published paper, the author should send a correction to the Editor for publication as a Corrigendum.
Copyright Fisheries Science is the copyright of the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science. Authors should send the signed copyright transfer form to the Editor when the paper is accepted.
