About the journal

Aims and Scope Experimental Techniques is a bimonthly interdisciplinary publication of the Society for Experimental Mechanics focusing on the practicing engineer and engineering mechanics educators.
The purpose for Experimental Techniques is to promote technical and practical advancements in experimental mechanics while supporting the Society's mission and commitment to interdisciplinary application, research and development, education, and active promotion of experimental methods to:
Increase the knowledge of physical phenomena Further the understanding of the behavior of materials, structures, and systems Provide the necessary physical observations necessary to improve and assess new analytical and computational approaches.
Experimental Techniques accepts articles that focus on practical applications of experimental mechanics and innovative techniques used to create engineering solutions. This includes experimental observations and methods, analytical or computational methods linked to observations of physical phenomena, and finally non-deterministic analysis of experimental observations.

Instructions to Authors Author Guidelines
Experimental Techniques (ET) is a bi-monthly news magazine designed for the practicing engineer or technician. It is devoted to relatively brief and informal "how-to-do-it" (or "how-not-to-do-it") articles, emphasizing experimental, analytical and computational techniques and methods.
CONTENT: Provide the answers to the following 3 questions in the introductory paragraph: 1) Why is this work important? 2) Why should the reader read this article? 3) How can this work be used in a practical application?
ARTICLE SUBMISSION SPECIFICATIONS
Experimental Techniques now offers authors, editors, and reviewers the use of our fully web-enabled online manuscript submission and review system. To keep the review time as short as possible, we request that authors now submit manuscripts online. Manuscripts should be submitted to: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ext.
The online manuscript submission and review system offers easy and straightforward log-in and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission formats but the preferred formats for manuscripts are Word and LaTex. Preferred file formats for figures are TIFF (for continuous tone or photographic images) and EPS (for line art).
Word 2007: Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.
NOTE: In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript online, please contact the Editorial Office by clicking on the Instructions and Forms button at the top of the screen or email journals@sem1.com.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Please include the names and contact information of two potential reviewers for your manuscript.
A typical article would include 8-12 pages of double-spaced text, including tables and 6-10 figures.
TEXT REQUIREMENTS: The text of the article should be submitted in one file and should NOT include illustrations. Submit the text of the article in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, single-column, using a standard font (Times New Roman/Times, Arial/Helvetica) in 10-point type. Avoid over formatting the manuscript. Include a list of Figure Captions as a separate page in the article document, and include all tables at the end of the text document.
REFERENCES: The References should appear in a separate bibliography at the end of the paper, double-spaced, with items referred to by numerals and in alphabetical order. References in the text should be denoted by superscript numbers, e.g. text 12. References should be complete, in the following style: Style for papers: Author(s) last name followed by initials for each author, paper title, publication name, volume, month, year and inclusive page numbers. Style for books: Author(s), title, publisher, location, year, chapter or page numbers (if desired).
ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS: Submit all figures in separate files. All figures must be black & white. Artwork should be correctly sized/proportioned. There are two preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). Portable Document Format (PDF) is also accepted, HOWEVER - only if text is submitted as a Microsoft Word document. PDF and LaTex files and PDF image files are NOT compatible within the Manuscript Central system. We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Creating PDF files is easier than ever these days and they can be an excellent way for you to provide your figures in electronic format. However, you must be careful to ensure that any embedded images are of high quality and have not been downsampled in the creation of the PDF. To check the quality of the embedded images you should zoom in on the PDF to a magnification of 400%. This allows you to visually check the quality of the images. The other advantage of PDFs is that they can be easily created from any application on your computer. Although Adobe Acrobat is the most common and best PDF creation software, there are a number of alternatives that can be found on the internet. Please note: PDF image files can NOT be submitted if text is submitted in LaTex. PDF images files are only allowed when accompanying text is submitted as a Microsoft Word document.
Metric units are used in the journal. SI Units (International System of Units) is the only acceptable system. Authors are directed to refer to 'Standard Number E 380' of the American Society for Testing and Materials for a complete description of the SI Units. If the primary measurement system used in the presented work is in American standard Units, then this may be used with corresponding metric values in parentheses.
GENERAL INFORMATION E/T reserves the right to edit the article for grammar and usage. Any article accepted by E/T becomes the property of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. to be published in E/T and other SEM publishing vehicles.

AUTHOR SERVICES Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
