About the journal
Articles deal with protists, unicellular organisms either free-living in various habitats or parasitic that are used in basic research or even application. The European Journal of Protistology covers topics such as the structure and systematics of protists, their development, ecology, molecular biology and physiology. Beside publishing original articles the journal offers a forum for announcing scientific meetings. Reviews of recently published books are included as well. With its diversity of topics, the European Journal of Protistology is an essential source of information for every active protistologist and for biologists of various fields.
Instructions to Authors
The European Journal of Protistology publishes original contributions from the entire field of protistology including phycology and mycology. Manuscripts should be submitted in correct English. Authors are responsible for the linguistic accuracy of their papers.
Copyright
Submission of a manuscript implies that the submitted work has not been published before (except as part of a thesis or lecture note or report, or in the form of an abstract ); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors as well as by the authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out; that written permission of copyright holders was obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources; that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors hand over the transferable copyrights of the accepted manuscript to the publisher; and that the manuscript or parts thereof will thus not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holder. Copyrights include, without spatial or timely limitation, the mechanical, electronic and visual reproduction and distribution; electronic storage and retrieval; and all other forms of electronic publication or any other types of publication including all subsidiary rights.
Organization of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted in triplicate. The text must be typed double-spaced throughout, including references, tables, and legends for the figures. Use an easy-to-read typeface not smaller than 12 pt (10 cpi). Number the pages of your manuscript consecutively, title page counting as p. 1. The name of the first author must appear in the right-hand corner of each page. If possible send a floppy disc copy of the latest version of the complete manuscript together with a complete traditional paper version including text and figures. ?Text, including italics and bold characters, should be saved as Word or WordPerfect documents in DOS or Macintosh format. Do not use capital letters for authors?names or headlines. ?Pictures should be saved as tif or eps-format.
The Layout of your Manuscript
1. Title Page Arrangement: Full title of article, first name(s) in full and surname(s) of author(s) without academic titles, full addresses, running title, address for correspondence with fax and/or e-mail.
2. Summary: Write the summary on p. 2 not exceeding 200 words. It should present the purpose of the investigation, the most important methods, the main findings, and the principal conclusions.
3. Key Words: Your manuscript should have a maximum of six key words referring to the subject of the publication and not to its methods. Key words are used for compilation of a subject index at the end of each volume. The editors may change the key words.
4. Text: Subdivide articles as follows: Introduction, Material and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References. Avoid footnotes. Genera and species names should be written in italics. Give sources and strain designations for authenticated strains of protista in Material and methods. At the time of submission, manuscripts that contain nucleotide or protein sequence data should include the accession numbers from one of the public sequence databanks (e.g. DDBJ, EBI, NCBI, PDB, PIR, PRF, SwissProt). Authors can request from the databank that their sequences are to be held confidential until publication of the manuscript.
5. References: References must not include dissertations, papers not yet accepted for publication and personal communications. Abstracts are allowed only if they are published in a regular scientific journal. In the text references should be in chronological order and with the year in parentheses: Suzaki and Shigenaka (1982), Wichterman (1986), Lukes (1994) Kinoshita et al. (1995); at the end of a sentence: (Suzaki and Shigenaka 1982; Wichterman 1986; Lukes 1994; Kinoshita et al. 1995). The list of all references should be in alphabetical order. Authorities for taxonomic names are not to be cited as references unless the appropriate publication is referred to in the text. Examples for bibliographic arrangement of references: Examples for bibliographic arrangement of references: ?Journals: Brugerolle G., Breunig A. and K鰊ig H. (1994): Ultrastructural study of Pentatrichomonoides sp., a trichomonad flagellate from Mastotermes darwiniensis. Europ. J. Protistol. 20, 372?78. ?Books: Wichterman R. (1986): The biology of Paramecium. 2nd ed. Plenum Press, New York. ?Articles from books: Machemer H. (1986): Electromotor coupling in cilia. In: L黷tgau H. C. (ed.): Membrane control of cellular activity, pp. 205?50. G. Fischer, Stuttgart. When several papers published in the same year by the same author(s) are cited, they should be distinguished by adding a, b, c to the year. No person may be cited as a source of personal communication without consent.
6. Tables and Figures: ?Tables: Type tables double-spaced on separate pages. Number tables consecutively and give a brief specific title. Each table should be self-explanatory and supplementary to the text. ?Figures: Plan all figures to suit a column width of 8.3 cm or a page width of 17.1 cm. Figures may be combined to a maximum plate size of 17.1 x 22.6 cm. Submit figures affixed on thin flexible cardboard. Submit one copy of every figure for reproduction and two copies for reviewing purposes. Photographs and electron micrographs must be sharp, high contrast prints on glossy paper, trimmed at right angles. Components of figure-plates should be abutted. All photographs should be prepared in the final size of reproduction and labeled with press-on lettering. Submit diagrams and the line drawings in twice the final size of reproduction. Number all figures consecutively as a single series. The costs of color illustrations must be borne by the author. Legends, brief and precise, must indicate magnifications and explain symbols and letters. ?The position of Tables and Figures should be indicated at the margin.
7. Short communications: Short communications with less than 1,500 words of text may include one figure and one table. A single "Results and Discussion" section should be used. Papers must be complete in themselves.
Reprints
30 reprints of each paper will be furnished free of charge. Orders for additional reprints can be submitted to the publisher on a form provided with the proofs.
