Instructions to Authors

Correspondence

All correspondence relating to publication in the journal should be addressed to Professor F. McDonald, Editor, European Othodontic Society, Flat 20, 49 Hallam Street,London W1W 6JN

Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere, and they are subject to editorial revision. All papers submitted for publication in the European Journal of Orthodontics are subject to assessment by independent referees.

Manuscripts

Authors should submit the original manuscript and two additional copies. The text should be typewritten, on one side of the paper only; the lines must be double spaced and there should be wide margins (about 2.5 cm). All pages should be numbered in sequence. The first page should bear the names of all authors (no qualifications), followed by a brief address. A short running title is required when the full title of the paper exceeds 45 letters. The full 'Address for correspondence' should also appear on this page. Only those individuals who have played a positive part in the research should be included as authors. The names of those who have contributed with advice or provision of materials should be included in the acknowledgements at the end of the paper. The second page should have only the title of the paper. The text then begins with a Summary (on a separate page of not more than 250 words) followed, where appropriate, by an Introduction, Materials (or Subjects) and Method, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement(s) and References.

References

The accuracy of references is the responsibility of the author. References in the text should be quoted by the author's name(s) and the year of publication. In the case of two authors both names should be stated. If there are more than two authors only the first author plus et al., is used.

Reference List

All references should be in alphabetical order of author's names in double or triple spacing. References to papers should include authors' surnames and initials, year of publication, full title of paper, journal name in full, volume number, first and last page numbers, e.g.
Vardimon A D, Graber T M, Voss L R 1989 Stability of magnetic versus mechanical palatal expansion. European Journal of Orthodontics 11: 107-115

References to books are given as follows:
Moorrees C F A 1959 The dentition of the growing child. Harvard University Press. Cambridge
Solow B, Greve E 1979 Craniocervical angulation and nasal respiratory resistance. In: McNamara J A (ed.) Nasorespiratory function and cranial growth. Monograph No., Craniofacial Growth Series, Center for Human Growth and Development, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, pp.6--54
(Punctuation should be as in the examples quoted above).

Illustrations

Illustrations should be kept to a reasonable number. Three copies of each illustration should be submitted but two of these may be photocopies. Photographs should be colour or black and white, glossy prints and should be unmounted. Each illustration must be clearly marked on the reverse side lightly in pencil with the figure number and the author's name, and the top of the figure should be indicated with an arrow. Scale bars should be used to indicate the magnification of photomicrographs. Line drawings should be in black ink on high quality paper. They should not be more than twice the size desired in the final reproduction.
Photographs of subjects must be accompanied by a written consent. Failure to do so will result in the blacking out of the eyes to avoid recognition.
The legends for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet.

Tables

Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper and should not be ruled. The number of the table and the heading must be typed at the top of the tables. All tables and illustrations should be cited consecutively in the text.

Abbreviations and units

All measurements should be expressed in S.I. units except blood pressure which will continue to be expressed in mm Hg.

Disk submission

Following revision of the manuscript authors will be requested to submit the FINAL version on disk in addition to one hard copy printout of the paper. The following programs are acceptable: Microsoft Word for Windows, WordPerfect 5.1, Word for Apple Macintosh.

Discussion of Papers

Questions or criticisms concerning recently published papers may be sent to the Editor, who will refer them to the authors. The readers' comments and authors' replies may subsequently be published together. There is no other correspondence section in the Journal.

Proofs

Authors will receive proofs of their papers for correction. No major changes are permissible at this stage and alterations should be restricted to correction of typographical errors.

Offprints

An offprint order form will be despatched with each proof, and if offprints are required this should be completed and returned promptly to Oxford University Press.

Human and Animal Experiments

Attention is drawn to the Declaration of Helsinki and the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals (DHEW Publication, NIH, 80-23). The editor reserves the right not to accept papers unless adherence to the principles embodied in these documents is apparent.

Copyright

It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to publish to the European Orthodontic Society. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the licence agreement, Authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance.

Authors are reminded that it is their responsibility to comply with copyright laws. It is essential to ensure that no parts of the text or the illustrations have or are due to appear in other journals, without prior permission from the copyright holder.
