About the journal
Publishes papers on environmental science topics that include development and application of fundamental principles toward solving problems in land, air and water media, including environmental applications of the basic sciences. Contains descriptions of original experiments, developments in theory, and papers which combine new experiments with theoretical insights. The Journal also includes scientifically based, practice-oriented papers and contributions on newly emerging topics such as brownfields, natural attenuation and pollution prevention. In addition, the Journal focuses on applications of environmental engineering science to policy issues and sustainable development. Indexed in Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology, Environmental Sciences; National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Technical Information Center (NIOSHTIC) database; Industrial Hygiene Digest.
Instructions to Authors
General. Environmental Engineering Science publishes refereed, full length papers, shorter communications, review papers, and letters to the editor. All contributions should conform to the aims and scope of the Journal. The Editors welcome contributions on new topics that fall within the broad scope of environmental engineering science. Papers should be complete and authoritative accounts of work which has special significance and must be presented clearly and concisely. Shorter communications deal with new ideas and specific points rather than developing a theme, and should not exceed the equivalent of 2,000 words including illustrations and tables. Review papers are commissioned by the Editor. Authors wishing to submit a review paper should contact the Editor; letters to the Editors are of two kinds: letters commenting on work published in the Journal should be sent to the Editor; letters concerned with novel and particularly interesting concepts, or giving advance results that will subsequently be reported fully in a paper should be sent to the appropriate Editor in the same way as a paper.
Submission of Work
Only contributions not submitted or published elsewhere can be accepted for review. Furthermore, authors must agree not to submit elsewhere a paper submitted to and accepted by Environmental Engineering Science. Authors should refer to an Editor if they are in doubt about what constitutes publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for the originality of their texts. Authors are encouraged to submit the names and addresses of five potential referees. Manuscripts from Europe should be submitted to the European Editor, Professor John Gregory, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom. Manuscripts dealing with air pollution should be submitted to Air Pollution Technologies Editor, Dr. Brian K. Gullett, Air Pollution Technology Branch (MD-65), National Risk Management Research Laboratory, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Research Triangle Park, NC, 27711. All other manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief, Professor Domenico Grasso, Picker Engineering Program, Smith College, Northampton, MA 01063 Phone: (413) 585-7000; FAX: (413) 585-7001 E-mail: dgrasso@smith.edu.
Format
All papers should be typed, double-spaced on 8 l/2 x 11 paper with wide margins, on one side of the page only, in English. Submit the original and three copies, including illustrations and tables. Final revisions should be submitted on disk in Microsoft Word. Do not imbed the art in the Word file, but submit it separately as either glossy photographs or prints, or in high resolution (a least 300 DPI for photographs and 1200 DPI for illustrations) tiff or eps files. Color art must be saved as CMYZK—not RGB. Please provide a laser printout of the art to ensure accuracy. Avoid submitting Powerpoint files. Manuscripts may be edited for clarify and grammar. The title page should include the authors' names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), a list of keywords, and a running title of about 45 characters. We require the full mailing address and contact information (telephone, fax, and e-mail address) for EACH author listed on your paper. Please include the address(es) either on the title page of your paper or on a separate sheet. Please also indicate the corresponding author. The second page should consist of an abstract of not more than 250 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. A list of key words should be included on this page. The papers should follow this format: abstract, introduction, experimental protocols, results, discussion, summaries, acknowledgements, references. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom correspondence should be directed including phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Please follow the requested style to avoid delays in publication. Consult an issue of the Journal for the exact format.
Tables and Illustrations
Type each table with its title on a separate sheet of paper. Use arabic numerals to number tables. Remember each table must stand alone-i.e., contain all necessary information in the caption, and the table itself must be understood independently of the text. Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. Information that appears in the text should not be repeated in tables, and tables should not contain data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.
For hard copy submission of figures, original glossy photographs for all illustrations must be supplied with the manuscript. (Photocopies can not be accepted.) All illustrations should be numbered and labeled with the first author’s name on the back. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A legend should be supplied for each illustration, and all legends numbered consecutively and provided (double spaced) on a separate page. Figures should be numbered in the order cited in the text. A complete set should be submitted with each copy of the manuscript. Images should not show the name of the manufacturer. Please keep in mind that the figures will be reduced, so please do not submit large figures/graphs that contain small type, as the text within the figure will not be readable after reduction.
Electronic submission of art is acceptable with the following caveats:
· Do not include any illustrations as part of your text file. · Do not prepare any figures in Word as they are not workable. · Line illustrations must be submitted at 1200 DPI. · Halftones and color photos should be submitted at a minimum of 300 DPI. · Adobe is the preferred software. Avoid submitting PowerPoint files. · Save art as either TIFF or EPS files. Avoid submitting JPEG files. · Color art must be saved as CYMK not RGB · Provide a laser printout of all art to ensure accuracy.
Illustrations can be printed in color with a subsidy from the author and are encouraged. Contact the publisher for details.

Permissions
The author must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables and, text from previously published material. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher, not the author or editor) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information should be included in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other laboratories, and should accompany the manuscript.
