Instructions to Authors
Submission of a manuscript to Digestive Diseases and Sciences is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously in any form, including symposia and proceedings of meeting, except in brief abstract form, and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Plenum Publishing Corporation will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. Such a written transfer, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
A completed copy of the checklist below and the signed copyright form that appears in each issue of the journal must accompany each manuscript that is submitted for consideration.
Complete this checklist
- Four complete sets of typescript are submitted (original and three copies), double-spaced throughout on 8 1/2 × 11" paper, with 1 1/2" margins all around. This requirement applies to all typescript, including book reviews, notices, etc. Reviewers will be instructed to destroy their copy of the manuscript upon completion of review.
- The typescript, if original article, is arranged as follows: abstract, key words, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references, tables, figure legends, figures.
- The title page includes title of article, name(s) of author(s) and highest academic degree(s), department and institution from which the work originated, acknowledgment of support or sponsorship, postal address for proofs and reprint requests, and suggested running head (not exceeding 40 characters, including spaces). Personal acknowledgments, if any, are given in a separate section at the end of the article.
- An abstract of 150 words or less states concisely the purpose, results, and conclusions of the study described in the manuscript. Abbreviations, footnotes, and references are not used in the abstract. Do not include abstracts in case reports.
- A list of 4-6 key words is provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes and should preferably be terms from the Index Medicus Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list. Original articles, including case reports, require key words.
- References are cited in the text by numerals enclosed in parentheses. The references section is typed double-spaced on sheets separate from the text, and is numbered consecutively in the order in which references are cited in text. Included are last names and initials of all authors, title of article, name of publication, volume, inclusive pages, and year published. Abbreviations conform to those used in Index Medicus. The style and punctuation of the references conform to the following examples:
Journal Article
1. Sandborn WJ, Tremaine WJ, Batts KP, Pemberton JH, Rossi SS, Hofmann AF, Gores GJ, Phillips SF: Fecal bile acids, short-chain fatty acids, and bacteria after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis do not differ in patients with pouchitis. Dig Dis Sci 40:1474-1483, 1995
Book
2. Banks PA: Pancreatitis. New York, Plenum Medical, 1979
Contribution to a Book
3. Creutzfeldt W: Endocrine tumors of the pancreas. In The Diabetic Pancreas. BW Volk, KF Wellmann (eds). New York, Plenum Medical, 1977, pp 551-590
- A list of three potential reviewers including their mailing addresses and telephone and fax numbers is included.
- Tables are typed double-spaced on separate sheets, with the table number and table title centered above the table and explanatory notes below the table.
- The figure title and caption material appear in the legend and not on the figure. Legends are typed double-spaced on sheets separate from the text. Figures are numbered in one consecutive series in the order in which they are cited in the text. Sufficient information is included in the legends to interpret the figures without reference to the text.
- Three complete sets of unmounted illustrations are submitted. Reproductions are clear, with sharp contrast, especially where fine lines such as those of grids or traces are to be retained. Illustrations are no larger than 8 1/2 × 11 inch, but preferably of a size not needing enlargement or reduction. If color illustrations are submitted, three sets of glossy prints accompany the manuscript. (Prints are preferred to slides as they are a more reliable guide to the final quality of reproduction.) If color illustrations are submitted, cover letter states that the author will bear the cost of color reproduction. The author's last name, the figure number, and an indication of "top," if otherwise not clear, are indicated on the back of each illustration. Photomicrographs submitted are of the best possible quality. (Photocopies of original photographs of routine histology and electron microscopy cannot be assessed.)
- Investigations Involving Human Subjects: The journal requires that investigations performed in the United States on human subjects have the prior approval of the appropriate institutional committee on human experimentation. Authors are required to submit a signed statement as to the date and details of the appropriate review. In countries where such mechanisms for approval do not exist, authors are required to submit a signed declaration that the research was carried out in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. A similar assurance is required to document that animal experimentation was performed under appropriate circumstances.
- After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor's Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying information — software, journal name, and first author's last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor's Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard-copy manuscript.
Exclusive Publication Statement for Authors Submitting Original Research or Case Reports I certify that none of the material in this manuscript has been published previously in any form and that none of this material is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. This includes symposia and proceedings of meetings, except in brief abstract form. Author's signature (no "for" signature) Please complete and sign the copyright form in this issue
