About the journal
New focus on clinical research reports
慏igestion?is a leading medical journal publishing research reports on diseases and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas and on gastrointestinal endocrinology. Papers cover investigative physiology in humans and animals, metabolic studies, and clinical work on the etiology, diagnosis, and therapy of human diseases. Moreover, there is a new section concentrating on human studies. It is thus especially cut out for gastroenterologists employed in hospitals and outpatient units, as well as research units. Moreover, the journal抯 coverage of studies on the metabolism and effects of therapeutic drugs carries considerable value for clinicians and investigators beyond the immediate field of gastroenterology.

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (with 3 sets of illustrations of which one is an original) together with a soft copy on disc. The manuscript should match the electronic file exactly. Editorial work and copy-editing will be executed from the disk version of your manuscript. Conditions All manuscripts are subject to editorial review. Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of 慏igestion?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher. It is the author抯 responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications. Special Requirements 1. Investigations Involving Human Subjects: 慏igestion?requires that investigations performed on human subjects have the prior approval of the institutional committee on human experimentation. Authors are required to submit a signed statement as to the date and details of the appropriate review. In countries where such mechanisms for approval do not exist, authors are required to submit a signed declaration that the research was carried out in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. A similar assurance is required to document that animal experimentation was performed under appropriate circumstances. 2. Statement for Authors Submitting Original Research or Case Reports: 慣he enclosed manuscript . . .(Title). . . has been approved by me as well as by the responsible authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out. I certify that none of the material in this manuscript has been published previously in any form and that none of this material is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. This includes symposia and proceedings of meetings and preliminary publications of any kind except an abstract of 400 words or less.?(To be signed by all authors.) 3. The undersigned also confirm that they qualify for (co-)authorship according to the 慤niform Requirements for Manuscripts?published in the guidelines of the 慖nternational Committee of Medical Journal Editors?in 1988 as follows: Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; (b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and on (c) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions (a), (b), and (c) must all be met. Participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. General supervision of the research group is also not sufficient for authorship. Any part of an article critical to its main conclusions must be the responsibility of at least one author. Persons who have contributed intellectually to the article but whose contributions do not justify authorship may be named and their particular contribution described in the section 慉cknowledgements? Such persons must give their permission to be named. Arrangement Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address. Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3?0 key words in English is essential. Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 200 words. It should be structured as follows: Background/aims: What is the major problem that prompted the study? Methods: How was the study done? Results: Most important findings? Conclusion: Most important conclusion? Footnotes: Avoid footnotes. When essential, they are numbered consecutively and typed at the foot of the appropriate page. Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate sheet. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction (max. size 181 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author抯 name, and 憈op?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800?,200 dpi. Color Illustrations Up to 6 color illustrations per page can be integrated within the text at the special price of CHF 660.?/ USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author抯 expense. References In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as 憉npublished data?and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Preferably, please cite all authors. Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals.
