About the journal About the journal Diatom Research is the journal of the International Society for Diatom Research. The journal is published twice annually, in May and November, and welcomes manuscripts on any aspect of diatom biology. In addition to normally structured papers (see below), Short Notes and reviews of recent literature are published which need not contain all the sections required for 搉ormal?papers; we see these as being necessary to record information which is of interest but which cannot be followed up in detail. Discursive 揙pinion?papers are encouraged which would not necessarily follow the normal lay-out. If extremely long papers are to be offered, the author(s) should contact the editors first to discuss any problems. Book reviews and meeting reports can be published. All papers will be subject to critical review by the editors and referees, as appropriate to their content. Papers will be accepted in English, German, French or Spanish.
Instructions to Authors
Instructions to authors Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate either to the European Editor (K. Serieyssol) or to the North American Editor (Jeffrey R. Johansen). If accepted for publication, we request manuscripts on IBM PC disks (擜pple?users should submit their manuscripts on IBM formatted disks). The editor will advise when the disk should be forwarded, which should be after the reviewers?and editor抯 comments have been incorporated. At this time please include two print-out copies with the disk. In circumstances where it is not possible to use a word processor, we will accept typescript (English language only). Should there be any problems, please do not hesitate to consult the editors.
Only the title, author抯 name and address, and running head should be typed on the first sheet. The title should be in capital letters. The abstract should follow, typed on a separate page; in papers presented in languages other than English, an English abstract should be included. Normal papers will usually include Introduction, Material and Methods, Observations (or Results), Discussion, Acknowledgements, References and Figure Captions. Lines of text should be double-spaced and with wide margins (at least 3cm at left), the right-hand margin not aligned. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined. Use SI (metric) throughout. The figures and tables will be intercalated between sections of written text. It is important, therefore, that the arrangement of the figures and tables corresponds as far as possible to the order in which they are referred to in the text. Tables should be on separate sheets, complete with caption, and numbered in Arabic numerals. All tables, figures, line drawings or half-tones, should be numbered consecutively with bold Arabic numerals (i.e. not numbered separately within a numbered plate), and planned to fit a maximum size of 14 x 20cm,including the written caption. Refer to figures (in text and captions) as Fig. 1, Figs 2, 3 or Figs 2-4. Figure captions in a language other than English must be accompanied by a translation in English. The figure captions must be double-spaced, as in the rest of the text. Each legend should be meaningful without reference to the main text. Line drawings must be in black on high quality card. They may be submitted at the maximum size above, or designed for reduction to between two-thirds and a half (write the exact reduction required); it is important that lines and symbols are drawn boldly enough for reduction. One copy must be the original drawing; the other two may be photocopies. In manuscripts containing photographic plates, the original plates must be sent, plus two photographic quality copies - not photocopies. The originals should be squared off and mounted on thick card with a 1mm narrow white gap between each print. SEM photographs should be presented in true orientation, and not rotated. Both line drawings and photographs must contain bar scales to indicate the magnification. SEM photographs should be presented without the machine-inserted bar scales and data lines. References should appear in text as:- Smith (1986) or (Smith 1986); Smith & Brown (1986) or (Smith & Brown 1986); Smith et al. (1986) or (Smith et al. 1986). Journal titles or other source material should not be given in the text. In the Reference list, journal titles should be quoted in full, not abbreviated. Format examples as follows: Papers: SMITH, A. B. (1996). The diatoms. Diatom Research, 1, 123-130. SMITH, A. B., BROWN, C. D. &JONES, E. F. (1996). The diatoms. Diatom Research,1, 135-140. Symposia: SMITH, A. B. (1996). Diatom investigation. In: Proceedings of the Nth International Diatom Symposium (X. Y. Brown, ed.), 1-20. Biopress, Bristol. Books: ROUND, F. E., CRAWFORD, R. M. & MANN, D. G. (1990). The Diatoms. Biology and morphology of the genera. 747 pp. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. In all references, please pay great attention to diacritic marks, e.g., ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? and others appropriate to the language quoted. We do not require authors to follow any set terminology but we would discourage the introduction of unnecessary terms.
