Developmental Cell is a broad-spectrum journal that covers the fields of cell biology and developmental biology. It publishes research reports describing novel results of unusual significance in all areas of these two fields, and at the interface between them. Each issue also contains review articles tailored to the journal's broad readership. With this wide coverage, Developmental Cell is a unique cross-disciplinary resource for researchers in both these fields, and for the general scientific community.
Developmental Cell will consider papers in any area of cell biology and developmental biology. Examples of these include cell proliferation, intracellular targeting, cell polarity, membrane traffic, cell migration, stem cell biology, morphogenesis, developmental roles of genes or pathways and differentiation. The primary criterion for publication in Developmental Cell, as for all Cell Press journals, is new biological insight. We recognize that there are many ways in which such insight can be obtained, and Developmental Cell is interested in studies using the full range of methodologies available to the cell and developmental biology communities. We are happy to consider any study that leads to important new conclusions about biological function.
Developmental Cell is a complementary partner for its companion journal Molecular Cell, and has similar standards for publication.

Instructions to Authors
Developmental Cell publishes research papers describing important advances in cell biology and developmental biology. Submitted papers should report novel findings that are of unusual significance in their field.
Reviewing and Publication Schedule
All submissions will be subject to an immediate screening process by the Editors. Those that meet the criteria for consideration will normally be sent to reviewers who have agreed in advance to assess the paper rapidly. The Editors will make every effort to reach decisions on these papers within four weeks of the submission date. Papers that do not conform to the general criteria for publication will be returned immediately, without detailed review. Accepted papers will appear in the next available issue.
Submission of Research Articles
Developmental Cell encourages authors to submit manuscripts via our online submission system, Editorial Manager (https://ww1.editorialmanager.com/dc/). Authors who are submitting a manuscript online for the first time should read the Author Tutorial for Editorial Manager.
Manuscript file types that we can accept for online submission include Word, WordPerfect, RTF, and TXT; figure file types include TIFF, JPEG, EPS, Postscript, and PDF (see below for figure specifications). Please do not submit Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, or Illustrator files to Developmental Cell for review purposes, as Editorial Manager does not support these file types. Required items differ for each article type and are specified during the uploading of files for review. Note that abstracts need to be submitted as text files separate from the body of the manuscript as well as within the manuscript file. If you are unable to submit your manuscript online, a copy of the manuscript can be sent to The Editors, Developmental Cell, Cell Press, 1100 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138.
Please note: If a paper is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to send hard copies of all text and figures, as well as a Microsoft Word file of the text and digital files of the figures on a single CD.
If a manuscript is closely related to papers in press or submitted elsewhere, it will be considered for publication only after copies of these papers are provided. Under no circumstances will any paper be considered that contains any data that have been or will be submitted for publication elsewhere (including symposium volumes). Revised manuscripts will be reconsidered only if resubmitted within two months of the date of the original decision.
Manuscript Organization
All text should be double spaced. Footnotes should not be used and will be transferred to the text. Gene symbols should be italicized; protein products should not be italicized. Nonstandard abbreviations should be defined when first used in the text. Please use American spelling.

Our editorial assistants will then take care of entering your manuscript or review into the system.

First-time users
If you have never used Developmental Cell Editorial Manager and have not received an email from us with an assigned "username" and password, please click the "Register" button from the home page menu and enter the requested information. Upon registering successfully, you will receive an email with instructions to verify your registration.
If you received an email from us with an assigned username and password, PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER AGAIN. Simply log in.
Repeat users
Please click the "Login" button from the menu above.
Reviewers
Please click the "Login" button from the menu above and login as "Reviewer role". Upon logging in choose "New Assignments" or "Pending Assignments", as appropriate. Choose "Completed Assignments" to see the current status of any manuscript whose review you already submitted.
To change your username and password
After you have logged in select "Update My Information" from the menu above. At the top of the screen, click the "Change Password" button and follow the directions.
Forget your password?
If you have forgotten your password, click the "Login" button from the menu above and select "Forget Your Password" at the bottom of the screen. Follow the directions and you will be notified of your password via email.
