About the journal

CRANIO, The Journal of Craniomandibular Practice, first published in December, 1982. The journal was born in the hearts of a group of independent practitioners who were interested in presenting a journalistic format covering the field of temporomandibular disorders not currently being addressed in the professional literature. Today, CRANIO  is the oldest and largest journal in the world that devotes its entire emphasis to the reporting of temporomandibular disease and disorders.

Riley H. Lunn, D.D.S., is the journal's founding editor. There is a 40-member editorial board. Associate editors are Per-Lennart Westesson, D.D.S., Ph.D. and Wesley E. Shankland, II, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D.

After three years of publication by Chroma, Inc., the journal was sold in 1985 to Williams & Wilkins Publishers of Baltimore, Maryland. For seven years, Williams & Wilkins published CRANIO until it was repurchased by Chroma, Inc. in 1992. Throughout the life of the journal, Dr. Lunn has served as its editor. CRANIO is published quarterly (January, April, July, October) from the home office in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The journal's website, www.cranio.com , is updated quarterly in concert with each new issue.

CRANIO is a multidisciplinary journal, with editorial board members from all fields of medicine and dentistry, including general dentists, oral surgeons, orthopedists, radiologists, orthodontists, chiropractors, professors and behavioral scientists, physical therapists, and osteopathic and ear, nose and throat physicians. While our home office is in Chattanooga, TN, our editors and contributors represent several different countries and locations throughout the United States.

From the beginning, all manuscripts have been peer-reviewed on a double-blind basis to avoid personal bias. Articles are screened for clinical relevance and state-of-the-art expertise. CRANIO publishes commendable works from outstanding researchers and clinicians in their respective fields. The multidisciplinary format allows individuals practicing with a TMD emphasis to stay abreast of related disciplines as each issue presents multiple topics from overlapping areas of interest. If you are interested in submitting an article for publication, please read our |Instructions for Authors| . We welcome your participation.

CRANIO's current readership ( approximately 3,000) is comprised primarily of dentists; however, many physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, osteopathic physicians and other related specialists subscribe and contribute to CRANIO. Several recent letters to the editor are reproduced in the |Reader Comments| section.

A number of organizations have adopted CRANIO as their official journal. CRANIO, however, has maintained its status as an independent publication, operating outside these organizations to remain independent of the opinions generated by a particular group or discipline.

Professional organizations offering CRANIO to their membership include:

Tennessee C.R.A.N.I.O. Daniel A. Hixon, Jr. D.M.D., Nashville, Tennessee

NederlandseVereniging voor Gnathologie. Paul Koole, D.D.S., Gasselternijveen, The Netherlands

American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. Gerald J. Murphy, D.D.S., Grand Island, Nebraska

American Equilibration Society. Dr. Daniel Tylka, Lincoln, Nebraska

We invite you to keep up-to-date with CRANIO by visiting our website.  Subscription information is available at the website or by calling (800) 624-4141. Your questions and comments are always welcome at contact@cranio.com.

Instructions to Authors

CRANIO welcomes contributions of original scientific articles, letters to the editor, and special reports related to craniomandibular practices from all parts of the world. Our scientific papers are peer reviewed by the editor and at least two other reviewers. In certain situations, outside reviewers may also be used.
If you are an academic or scientific author who wants to submit a paper for publication, please review our Guidelines for Authors. If you would like to discuss your article submission, the best time to contact us is between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm EST or email us anytime at kkimbell@cranio.com.

Content Categories

CRANIO: The Journal of Craniomandibular Practice includes the following and seeks contributions in these categories:

1. Scientific articles (reviewed by the editorial board).

a. Research articles. These include experimental/ laboratory research papers or theoretical papers and literature reviews.

b. Articles from the practice and clinic. These include procedures and individual case reports, clinical research reports, and clinical observations.

2. Letters to the editor (not reviewed by the editorial board). Letters in the "Cranio Comments" section are subject to editing and condensing. Criticism should be objective and constructive. Potentially libelous letters will not be published.

3. General (not reviewed by the editorial board). These include (1) a listing of significant education courses and events under the heading "Cranio Calendar." (2) editorials, (3) guest editorials, (4) book reviews, (5) Editor's Forum, (6) position papers, (7) special reports on current topics of interest, (8) General Dentistry Notes, (9) Practice Management Update.

CRANIO recognizes that clinical reports and studies have often not been subjected to the same procedures and analysis that formal scientific research provides. However, we believe that these primary observations may lead scientific investigators to new areas of research and in-depth study, inspiring progress in the field of craniomandibular practice. The journal, therefore, encourages the submission of these works.

Publication Policy

The decision to print a manuscript will be based on the opinions of the editor and at least two other reviewers from the editorial board or section editors. Outside reviewers may be used in addition to the above mentioned. Articles containing statistical analyses will also receive a statistical review. Reviewers' names will not be revealed to the author, nor will authors' names be revealed to editors. Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications herein are those of the author(s) and the editor(s), and the publisher disclaims any responsibility or liability for such material.

CRANIO is primarily interested in publishing original manuscripts and priority will be given to these. If a manuscript has been simultaneously submitted to another journal, it must be so stated by the author at the time of submission to CRANIO.

In rare cases, the journal may accept previously published material if it is from a journal not normally available to our readers. Prior publication of abstracts will in no way prejudice the publishing of the complete study.

Copyright

Copyright to all material published in CRANIO: The Journal of Craniomandibular Practice is vested in CHROMA, Inc. In accordance with the provisions of the Copyright Act of 1976, if the manuscript is accepted for publication it will be necessary for the editorial office to receive, in writing, the assignment of copyright from the authors to CHROMA, Inc.
