Instructions to Authors
1. Guidelines
1.Vendor Product Specifications/Application/Technology Update GUIDELINES
Application Update: Control Engineering's Application Update column looks at application stories in the format of short, to-the-point, problem-solution pieces. We like to emphasize the industrial environment and talk about things being made or improved梬hether by discrete, continuous process or batch-type manufacturing. Other aspects of technology and innovative products, however, can also make valid candidates, as long as controls are involved. The company and location should be named, users quoted, and titles provided. Please quantify梥pecific numbers or percentages should be cited to show improvements.
Technology Update: Control Engineering's "Technology Update" department provides an unbiased look at the next level of a specific technology used for industrial automation, controls, and instrumentation: devices or systems. The technology must touch the "control loop" in some way: sense (measure), decide (logic), or actuate (control element), along with the communications, software, and hardware that link those pieces.
The department page can mention one or multiple vendors, or be non-vendor-specific discussion of what's next for engineers that design, integrate/implement and use the technology. Advantages over present alternatives and under what situations the technology might best be used should be addressed.
Care should be taken to avoid a sales pitch of adjectives, providing instead quantified measurements or benefits and solid reasoning.
Word Length: A word document item will be 400-2,500 words long in its final form (no embedded images; submit images individually, see below).
Exclusivity: First use of a story is desirable, but not always realistic. Previous mention, excerpting, or some coverage in non-competing publications is acceptable.
Timeliness: Some application and technology stories are more time sensitive than others梩he newer the better.
Image requirements Digital images should be Photoshop compliant JPEG or GIF formats, at no larger than 72 dpi resolution for grayscale and four-color images in RGB format. Format no larger than 3 ?and four.
Rights: Control Engineering, Reed Business Information, assumes the right to publish, perform, display, digitize, transmit, reproduce and, as reasonably required for layout purposes, modify and reformat, in all formats and media now known or hereafter developed throughout the universe in perpetuity for any submitted photography, illustrations, graphics, other images, and related text.
PDF Guidelines
- High-res (printable) PDF files must be version 1.3 or compatible.
All fonts must be embedded. Images should be 300 dpi.
- Low-res PDF file must also be 1.3 or compatible
All fonts must be embedded Images should be 72dpi *Note the quality of the low-res will result in a quicker file to open but a lower quality for printing.
