The journal Contributions to Zoology (Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde) was started in 1848. The Contributions to Zoology are published by the Committee in charge of the Artis Library. This library was founded by the Royal Zoological Society 'Natura Artis Magistra', but became integrated in the University of Amsterdam in 1939.
The electronic version of Contributions to Zoology is an electronic journal distributed for free on the World Wide Web. Its purpose is to use the medium of the Internet to improve the communication of scientific research in zoology.
Instructions to Authors Introduction
The electronic version of Contributions to Zoology is an on the web available electronic journal. Its purpose is to use the medium of the internet to improve the communication of scientific research in zoology.
Articles should be written in the English language. Articles can be in the field of any branch of Zoology. Manuscripts are subject to peer review.
Authors are expected to clear all issues of copyright prior to submitting the article and to submit a statement (see form) about this subject.
Manuscript format
Manuscripts should be preferable submitted in Word 6.0 or higher. For Contributions to Zoology Online a conversion is made from Word to SGML. For this reason we ask the authors to prepare their manuscript by the following rules:
Submitted manuscripts should clearly show the location and content of graphics and multimedia in the article. Captions for figures, plates and multimedia should be placed in the text of the article where the figures, plates and multimedia must appear. Multimedia and graphic files should be submitted with the manuscript whenever possible.
Scientific names of general and lower categories are to be singly underlined. Underlining may not be used for other purposes.
Tables must be prepared by the table structure of Word (or in a table structure from another editor which can be converted to the Word table structure). Tables must be placed in the text of the article.
Each article should be accompanied by an abstract in English and a list of keywords. Except for short notes and reviews, the abstract should be followed by a list of contents.
Authors' names are not to be capitalized, and all other typographical indications are to be left to the editors. Each work must have an abstract in English. References are to be arranged at the end of the paper in alphabetical sequence of the author's names; further particulars in accordance with the following examples:

Ensure the document is in the following order: Title; Authors; Addresses; Keywords; Abstract; Body of the article; References; Appendices; Acknowledgements
Each article should include the e-mail addresses of the authors
The editors encourage the use of hyperlinks to articles published elsewhere on the web, as well to web sites of authors.
Multimedia and Graphics
Preferable all graphics, audio and video are accessed by thumbnails in the main text of the article (see example ). The exact file format instruction are given below. The size of thumbnails should be kept small. The graphics, audio, and video files must follow the rules given below, but in addition to these files, supplementary files may be sent which have higher quality and are greater in size. Provide a brief description (caption) in the text of what each multimedia or graphic is meant to illustrate.
Graphics Preferable all graphics are accessed by thumbnails in the main text of the article. Therefore the author should submit for each graphic an additional thumbnail. The size of thumbnails should be 100 pixels wide and no larger than about 15 Kb. The graphics which can be accessed through the thumbnails are preferable no larger than about 600 pixels in either dimension and preferable no larger than 75 Kb. Graphics should use JPEG format or GIF format.
Animations Animations should be in animated GIF format. No larger than about 200 pixels in either dimensions. Size possibly contained in 1MB
Video and/or Audio Files will be accepted in the formats MPEG (.mpg, .mpeg, .mp2 or .mp3), QuickTime (.qt, .mov), AVI (.avi)and Real Audio/Video .rm, .ra, .ram). Audio may also be in AU (.au) format.
Data sets Morphometric matrices should be in NEXUS format or as ASCII (.txt)
Larger files (with exclusion of the supplementary files) than mentioned in these guidelines may be negotiated with the editors
Submissions
Authors should send their article including the files for graphics, multimedia and datasets to R. Vonk, vonk@science.uva.nl (managing editor) in one of the following ways:
The operating system and the word processing software used to produce the article, as well as all file names, should be noted in the mail or in a readme file on the disc. The electronic file for each component of the manuscript (eg, Text, Images, Movies, Audio, Datasets) should be attached to the mail.
Preferably all the files should be attached as a single compressed and archived file in .zip format.

If for some reason you must compress and archive in another format, please notify the managing editor.
Also manuscripts in hardcopy and a copyright statement must be sent in duplicate to Dr. R.W.M. van Soest (General Editor), Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, P.O. Box 94766, 1090 GT Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The manuscripts must be printed on one side only of each sheet, with double spacing between the lines and broad margins; the text must be in final form for printing.
