Instructions to Authors
Feature article submission
Article submissions may cover technology advances, applications, tutorials, or technology trends regarding a particular type of connector or peripheral product. Feature articles should contain about 1,200 to 1,500 words, which includes all text such as headlines, references, and figure captions for 2 to 4 figures.
The best way to get a full-length feature article published in Connector Specifier is to consult our editorial calendar, and work with our editorial staff to submit a relevant detailed outline or abstract. After your submission is accepted, a completed article should be submitted by the agreed-upon deadline, usually three months before the date of publication (e.g., Jan. 1 for the April issue).
Formatting your article
Article text must be received electronically either via email or on disk through regular mail.
Please save the document in a Microsoft Word format. To send documents or graphics via regular mail, acceptable storage methods include 3.5-in. Mac or PC disk, Zip disk, Syquest cartridge, 3.5-in. magneto-optical disk, or CD ROM.
Body copy should be single-spaced, and contain no columns, codes, footnotes, or embedded graphics.
A complete submission should include:
- An electronic version of the text with a suggested headline using an active verb
- Byline and bio with author's name, company, job title, address, telephone, and email
- Two-sentence summary as a suggested "hook" for the reader
- Brief subheadings to break up long stretches
- Indicated figure placement, or "call-outs," e.g., (see Fig. 1), appropriately located in text
- Figure captions appended to end of article with captions in full sentences, e.g., FIGURE 1. Specific ABC technology uses detail one and two to achieve x, y, and z.
- Two to four graphical elements submitted separately in original file format(s)
- References if necessary to direct readers to further information
Manuscripts may be rejected if the subject is unrelated to the highly specific concerns of our subscribers. Other reasons for rejection include similarity to recently published articles, inadequate emphasis on newsworthy techniques or developments, non-objectivity that cannot be corrected with editing, or legal/ethical complications resulting from submission of the manuscript to other publishers.
Copyright of articles
Before we can publish your article manuscript, we ask that you transfer the rights with our Copyright Transfer Agreement. To protect both you and PennWell, Connector Specifier copyrights your article. You and your company retain all proprietary rights other than the copyright. These rights are clearly outlined in the agreement, which we will send to you upon acceptance of your article.
Scheduling and editing
Each issue of the magazine has a designated editorial emphasis. If accepted, your submission will be scheduled for use in an upcoming issue based on its relevance to the scheduled content of that issue. Publication will be handled in a timely manner, but the article will not necessarily appear immediately following the acceptance of your manuscript.
If necessary, our editorial staff will enhance the clarity and relevance of the submission, as well as confirm its grammar, punctuation, and spelling to the magazine's style. In cases where it may be necessary to expand, modify, or exclude portions of an article, we strive to ensure the integrity of the original manuscript. Authors of bylined feature articles will have a chance to approve copy before it goes to print.
Other types of submissions
Connector Specifier accepts submissions on a continuing basis for news and products for our website, newsletter, and the magazine.
Industry news: Staff-written connector-related industry news is based on your press release or announcement, and may cover major business transactions, industry trends, and key personnel changes.
New product announcements: Press releases or announcements on new connector or connector-related products must have a release date, and may be sent via email or regular mail. Photos of the product, if available, should accompany the press release either in electronic format if by email, or in regular photo format or slides if by mail.
Connector Specifier reserves the right to decline a submission at any point.
Graphics
Visual supplements are an excellent way to enhance your message in news, new products, and articles. Graphics or photos are especially important in technical articles, where difficult concepts are more easily shown rather than written. The following are acceptable graphics formats:
Traditional Photographic Images:
- 4 x 5" transparencies (preferred)
- 4 x 5" photographic prints
- 35-mm slides
- Please avoid laser printouts, color copies, or negatives of photographic images.
Digital Photographic Images:
- 300-dpi minimum resolution at 4x5" size
- Color-corrected CMYK
- Preferred formats are JPG, TIFF, GIF or EPS
- CAD/3-D files should be rendered and corrected to the above standards
Scanned Line Art/Logos:
- 1,200 dpi
- Bitmap Mode (Photoshop Mode - not a BMP file)
- Photoshop TIFF files with NO LZW compression
Screen Captures/Digital Cameras:
- A minimum resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels produces a printed image at a size of 4.27 x 3.41."
- Convert/Color-correct to CMYK
Our art department will recreate illustrations, schematics, technical drawings, charts, and graphs to reflect our publication's style.
Graphical formats to avoid: BMP, PCX, PICT or MPEG files, Word Metafiles, Corel Draw documents, PDF files, images embedded in PowerPoint documents or word-processing documents, and native application CAD/3D files.
