About the journal
Aims and Scope

Cover Image
The goals of the journal are to consolidate the lore of magnetic resonance into effective and easily understandable presentations for practitioners and to provide a forum for researchers to discuss fundamental aspects of magnetic resonance, both old and new, that relate to their research but are difficult to include in a research paper. Such articles are clearly valuable to the larger magnetic resonance community in conveying an understanding of basic principles and are expected to be useful for instruction in research settings. Articles are expected to maintain the highest standards of scientific and educational rigor and substance. The journal is addressed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, laboratory technical personnel, scientists new to magnetic resonance, and to more experienced scientists who wish to broaden their comprehension of magnetic resonance concepts as the field grows and expands.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Each submission must include a cover page stating the corresponding author's complete business street address (for shipping purposes), phone number, and fax number (if available). The original and three copies of the completed manuscript are to be submitted, with all textual pages double-spaced. Submissions should be sent to Dr. Daniel D. Traficante, NMR Concepts, 4 Corr Way, East Greenwich, RI 02818. Tel.: 401-885-3833; fax: 401-885-3626. All other correspondence should be addressed to the Publisher, c/o John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 111 River Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

Length. All text is to be typed double-spaced. Every page of the submitted manuscript is to be numbered. The entire manuscript should be equivalent in length to 5?0 journal pages (including figures, references, and tables), which is approximately 10?0 typewritten double-spaced pages. When submitting a longer manuscript, the author should consider dividing it into parts that can be published sequentially.

Multiple-Part Articles. To facilitate review and acceptance, multiple-part manuscripts should be submitted in their entirety.

  • A different abstract is required for each part.
  • An introduction and summary are recommended for each part.
  • The labeling of new equations, figures, tables, and references should begin with the numeral 1 in each part. In parts subsequent to Part I, equations referenced from earlier parts should be prefaced by the corresponding roman numeral (i.e., equation 4 from Part I would be referenced [I-4], equation 10 from Part II would be referenced [II-10]).
  • Problem Sets for Part I should refer only to Part I; Sets for Part II can refer to Parts I & II; etc.
  • A separate list of key words should be provided for each part.

Title Page. The first page of the manuscript should contain the article title, all authors' names and the addresses where the work was completed, followed by the abstract. For co-authored articles, use an asterisk to indicate the author to whom all correspondence should be sent. If the address line does not reflect the current/permanent address of the corresponding author, include it in a footnote on the title page. This does not apply to sabbatical/temporary addresses.

Abstract. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a 50- to 100-word abstract, which should concisely describe the substantive content. Because the abstract may be used directly by abstracting services, it must be self-contained, having no references to formulas, equations, or bibliographic citations that appear in the body of the manuscript.

Titles of Sections. The use of headings (i.e., Introduction, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, etc.) is recommended; they should appear in capital letters. Subheadings also may be used and should appear in upper- and lower-case letters.

Symbols, Abbreviations, and Acronyms. The American Chemical Society's latest edition of the Handbook for Authors or the Style Manual of the American Institute of Physics are to be followed for standard abbreviations, names, and symbols for units. If computer capability is not available, Greek letters or mathematical symbols may be identified in pencil in the margin. Acronyms and abbreviations must be written out where they first appear in the text, followed by the acronym or abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, they may appear in their shortened forms.

Mathematical Expressions. Italicize all variables and leave constants in roman typeface. Vectors are roman bold.

Equations. All equations should be numbered consecutively. Complicated structural formulas must be submitted as figures.

Figures. Figures should be professionally prepared and submitted in a form suitable for reproduction (camera-ready copy). Computer-generated graphs are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good quality laser printer. Figures must be numbered consecutively and a separate page should be used for each figure. A caption must be supplied for each figure and should not duplicate text material. All figure captions should appear collectively on one or more pages separate from the text.

All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Jennifer English at 201-748-6644/jenglish@wiley.com for further information.

Tables. Tables are to be numbered consecutively. Each table should be supplied with a title. Tables should be laid out carefully, so that minimum space is used and entries are accurately grouped and clearly labeled. Usually, a table should be arranged vertically, with more rows than columns. Footnotes to the table are placed directly below each table and are indicated by superscript, lower-case, italic letters (a,b,c). No table should be longer than one journal page.

References.

Wiley's Journal Styles Are Now in EndNote
EndNote is a software product that we recommend to our journal authors to help simplify and streamline the research process. Using EndNote's bibliographic management tools, you can search bibliographic databases, build and organize your reference collection, and then instantly output your bibliography in any Wiley journal style.
Download Reference Style for this Journal: If you already use EndNote, you can download the reference style for this journal.
How to Order: To learn more about EndNote, or to purchase your own copy, click here.
Technical Support: If you need assistance using EndNote, contact endnote@isiresearchsoft.com, or visit www.endnote.com/support.

Literature references are to be cited in order of appearance in the text by in-line, parenthesized, italic numerals. References to "unpublished" or "to be published" works should not be used. However, dissertations may be cited, and papers actually accepted may be referred to as "in press" if the name of the journal is included. Each reference should contain the authors' initials, last names, article title (in quotes), journal name (italicized), year (bold), volume (italicized), and initial and final page numbers, in that order. The name of the journal should be abbreviated in the style of the most recent Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index.

For example:

Journal

1. King VM, Armstrong DM, Apps R, Trott JR. 1998. Numerical aspects of pontine, lateral reticular, and inferior olivary projections to two paravermal cortical zones of the cat cerebellum. J Comp Neurol 390:537?51.

For book references, the form is: authors' last names, initials, title of the book, editor's name (if any), edition (if other than the first), place of publication, publisher's name, year of publication, and page numbers.

Book

2. Voet D, Voet JG. Biochemistry. New York: John Wiley & Sons; 1990. 1223 p.

Book chapter

3. Gilmor ML, Rouse ST, Heilman CJ, Nash NR, Levey AI. Receptor fusion proteins and analysis. In: Ariano MA, editor. Receptor localization. New York: Wiley-Liss; 1988. p 75-90.

Questions & Answers. To be consistent with our pedagogical approach, authors are encouraged to submit "Questions & Answers" that pertain to their articles and that could serve as a Self Test. This feature is optional and will not affect acceptance or rejection of papers submitted for publication. Additional magnetic resonance related "Questions & Answers" are also welcome. For the answers to multiple-choice questions, please circle the correct answer and explain why it is correct and why the others are not.

Footnotes. Authors are urged to give careful consideration to the logical construction of the manuscript, so that explanatory or parenthetical footnotes will not be needed.

Key Words. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a list of key words, i.e., terms that are essential to the understanding of the text. Key words will become part of the Subject Index that appears annually in the October issue.

Biography. Authors are asked to submit a 50- to 100-word biographical sketch and a photo. The sketch and photo will be published if provided. The photo should be approximately passport size.

Proofs. Authors will have the opportunity to review the editors' recommendations, at which time changes may be made. After final proofs are sent to the authors, substantive changes will not be accepted.

Reprints. Reprints can be ordered and purchased by filling out the form provided with the page proofs. Neither the manuscript nor its figures will be returned following publication unless a request for a return is made when the manuscript is originally submitted.

Copyright. No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed publication agreement, which serves as a transfer of copyright from author to publisher. A publication agreement may be obtained from the editor or the publisher. A copy of the publication agreement appears in most issues of the journal. Only original papers will be accepted and copyright in published papers will be vested in the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce material that has appeared in another publication.

Notes. If your work represents new information that would benefit from a more timely publication than is normally experienced, you may submit a short (1? page) "Note" with your manuscript. This note will be reviewed along with the manuscript but will be published in the next available issue following acceptance of your manuscript. The published note will indicate that a more complete article will be published in a subsequent issue.

Biographies. We welcome short (1? pages) biographies of the pioneers of NMR and the techniques they developed.

Book Reviews and Software Reviews. Any person who would like help in reviewing books/software for Concepts in Magnetic Resonance should contact the Editor-in-Chief.

Disk Submission Instructions

Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy.
The hard copy must match the disk.

The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).

Guidelines for Electronic Submission

Text
Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.

Software and format. Microsoft Word 6.0 and LaTeX are preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor and other forms of TeX are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.

File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.

Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.

Illustrations
All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.

Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.

Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.

File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).

Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
