About the journal

Cover

Combustion Science and Technology is an international journal which provides for open discussion and prompt publication of new results, discoveries and developments in the various disciplines which constitute the field of combustion. The editors invite original contributions dealing with flame and fire research, flame radiation, chemical fuels and propellants, reacting flows, thermochemistry, material synthesis, atmospheric chemistry and combustion phenomena related to aircraft gas turbines, chemical rockets, ramjets, automotive engines, furnaces and environmental studies. In so doing, the editors hope to establish a central vehicle for the rapid exchange of ideas and results emanating from the many diverse areas associated with combustion. Accordingly, both full-length papers on comprehensive studies, and communications of significant, but not fully explored, theoretical or experimental developments are included in the journal together with unsolicited and solicited comments on published matter and yearly, cumulative indices.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Four copies of a manuscript should be submitted to Professor R.A. Yetter, Editor-in-Chief, The Pennsylvania State University, 105 Research Building East, University Park, PA 16802-2329, USA. Publications of accepted corrected manuscripts can be facilitated if a computer disk or CD is submitted with hard copy. The disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors’ names, file name, and software program and exactly match the hard copy. Authors outside the North America continent may submit papers through a member of the Editorial Advisory Board. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Format:

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten and double-spaced. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Length: The maximum preferred length is 25 units, where a unit is one typewritten page of prescribed format or one figure. Language: English is preferred, but with additional delays, French, German, or Russian papers may be published if an English Summary of 200 words is also supplied. Translation services are available if required, and authors are charged for such services. Abstract: Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 150 words. Non-English papers should contain a similar abstract in the language, but must also contain a 200-word abstract in English. Keywords: Abstracts should be accompanied by two or more keywords which should facilitate indexing and data retrieval purposes. These words should be chosen from any of the headings found in the yearly CST index. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication, however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for each color figure is $600. If unable to bear the cost, authors should appeal to the Editors-in-Chief.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated.

Equations

Wherever possible mathematical equations should be typewritten, with subscripts and superscripts clearly shown. Identify unusual or ambiguous symbols in the margin when they first occur. To simplify typesetting, please use fractional exponents instead of root signs; and the solidus (/) in simple fractions.

Units

S.T. Units are preferred. Acceptable abbreviations of units are given in the Style Manual of the American Institute of Physics and similar publications.

References

Identify references in the text by the Harvard (name and date) system: either “Recent work (Smith, 1970)...” or “Recently Smith (1970) has found...” With three or more names, use the forms “Smith et al. (1970)” in the text. The full list should be collected at the end of the paper in alphabetical order and follow the Chemical Abstracts style. Examples:

Fenimore, C.P. and Jones, G.W. (1967) Oxidation of soot by hydroxyl radical. J. Phys. Chem., 71, 593.

Page, R.H. and Dixon, R.J. (1969) Computer evaluation of gas mixing. In Bahn, G.S.(Ed.) The Performance of High Temperature Systems, Gordon and Breach, New York, Vol. 2, Chap. 19. pp. 345-370

Papers which appear in the International Combustion Symposium Volumes should follow this style:

Magee, R.S. and Reitz, R.D. (1986) Extinguishment of Radiation Augmented Plastic Fires by Water Sprays, Proc. Combust. Instit., 21, 337.
