Instructions to Authors
1.GENERAL
Colloid Journal covers issues in the physical chemistry of surface phenomena and disperse systems. The Journal publishes original (both theoretical and experimental) research papers as well as review articles pertaining to the current state of research in the aforementioned fields. The journal welcomes articles that will stimulate scientific discussions. Letters to the Editor are restricted to brief reports of principally new phenomena or new regularities of unusual significance and interest seeking urgent recognition and warranting such priority. The journal includes a “Chronicle” Section, which gives information about conferences, workshops, and other events involving domestic and international scientific life. Articles are accepted from the authors of the CIS countries and foreign authors. Colloid Journal is completely translated into English. The English-language edition is published simultaneously with the Russian-language edition. Editorial Board has the right to reject articles due to the limited size of the Journal.
2. SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts for publication should be sent to the Editorial Office, Profsoyuznaya ul. 90, Moscow, 117997 Russia. Telephone 095 336-0555; E-mail: colljour@maik.ru. Contributions that have been published elsewhere are not accepted. Authors are solely responsible for the factual accuracy of their papers. It is the responsibility of the principal author to secure requisite permission from his or her employer and all papers submitted are understood to have received due clearance(s) for publication.
3. LANGUAGE
Papers written in Russian or in English are accepted. Authors from CIS countries should submit their papers in Russian with the list of special terms in English; the English translation of the paper can be additionally submitted as an option.
4. ORGANIZATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts should be submitted in duplicate, double–spaced on 22 × 28 cm or A4 paper, printed on one side only. Margins of at least 30 mm must be left at the top, bottom, and both sides of each page. All pages should be numbered consecutively, including the text, references, tables, and figure captions. The title of the paper should describe the contents fully but concisely. The title should be followed by the names of all authors and their affiliations. The name and address as well as telephone and e-mail/fax number of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent must be submitted. Every paper for publication must be preceded by an abstract. The usage of abbreviations in the title and abstract is strongly discouraged. The main text of the paper should begin on the second page of the manuscript. We recommend the use of sectioning in the manuscript: Introduction, Experimental, Results, Discussion, Conclusions. Headings and subheadings for different sections of the paper should be clearly indicated. Detailed mathematical discussion should be placed in an appendix. The manuscript must be signed by all authors. It is recommended that the names of foreign authors should be indicated in paper heading in original spelling in order to avoid mistakes in the translation. It would be appreciated also if these authors inform postal address of their affiliation in English. Manuscripts that do not confirm with these instructions will be rejected and returned to the authors without consideration of content. In the case when the manuscript will be returned to the authors for alteration, the revised version should be returned to the Editorial Office within two months with the original manuscript and authors’ answers on all reviewer’s remarks. If the manuscript will be delayed by the authors for over two months, it will thereafter be considered by the Editorial Office as newly received.
4.1. Formatting the Manuscript
All abbreviations and other notations should be defined the first time they are used and should be uniform throughout the manuscript. It is strongly recommended to adhere to the abbreviation system adopted by the journal. There should be no ambiguity regarding the positions of the bonds in structural formulas. Units of measurement, abbreviations and symbols should follow the International System of units (SI). Equations and formulae should be typewritten wherever possible. All formulae and other special notations should be typed or accurately traced in black ink and marked with a lead pencil. Distinctions should be clearly made between capital and lower-case letters. In cases where ambiguity might arise, underline capital letters twice and draw a double line above a letter to make clear that it is lower case (for example, and , , and ). Make sure that letter “o” and the figure 0 in subscripts and superscripts are easily distinguished by underlining the figure with a square bracket. Superscripts and subscripts should be marked by common typographical signs (that is, and ), respectively. To avoid confusion between letters and Roman numerals, mark letter as I and Roman numeral as I. Greek letters should be underlined with red pencil and vectors with blue (or typed in Roman boldface). Formulae should be enumerated consecutively throughout the manuscript. Only those formulae that are referred to in the subsequent text are numbered. Formulae that are numbered should be written on a separate line and indented. Mathematical symbols such as sin, lim, log, exp should be marked with a square bracket lying flat under the symbol. In chemical formulas, only superscripts and subscripts are marked.
4.2. Tables
All tables should be numbered, have a heading, and be aligned vertically. All columns in the table should be named and divided by the vertical lines. Nonstandard abbreviations are not allowed in table. Each table should be typed on a separate page.
4.3. Figures
Figures should not be larger than 18 × 24 cm and be submitted in two copies in an extremely distinct and accurate form. Lettering of figures should be marked in accordance with the text. Place each figure on a separate sheet; do not incorporate figures into the text, but group them at the end of the paper. Line artwork on tracing paper or white cards should be supplied in duplicate separate from the text. Supply figures as camera-ready artwork. Make the figure number and first author’s name on the front of the artwork. Keep wording within the artwork to a minimum. Generally, put the keys to symbols in the caption. If the artwork contains symbols that may not be typed, such as circles, triangles and the like, identify these symbols within the artwork. Submit the figure captions separately from the artwork, typed, double-spaced, and on the same page.
4.4. Photographs
Photographs should be submitted as glossy prints no larger than 6 × 9 in size. Each photograph should be in duplicate. Mark the top of the print and the scale on the reverse. The figures and the tables should be referred to in the text; indicate by marginal notation in the typescript where they are to be inserted. Do not use graphs and tables to illustrate the same results.
4.5. References
Responsibility for the accuracy of references rests with the authors. Do not list references which are not cited in the text. References should be numbered sequentially in the order in which they are cited in the text. The numbers should be placed in line (not superscripted) with the text and enclosed in square brackets. Collect references in numerical order under the heading “References” and type them on a separate page (or pages). References should be listed in the following style: Books: De Gennes, P.G., The Physics of Liquid Crystals, London: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1974. Journal Articles, Meeting Papers, and Articles in Periodicals: Freidzon, Ya.S and Shibaev, V.P., Liquid-Crystal Polymers, Plate, N.A., Ed., New York: Plenum, 1993, p. 80. Pashley, R.M. and Kitchener, J.A., J. Colloid Interface Sci., 1979, vol. 71, no. 3, p. 491. Dissertations: Chaudhury, M.K., PhD Thesis, State University of New York at Buffalo, 1984. Patents: Langsam, M. and Savoca, A.C.L., US Patent 4759776, 1988. Conferences and Symposia: Kay, B.D. and Perfect, E., Proc. 5th Intern. Symp. on Ground Freezing, Nottingham, 1988, p. 3. Papers that are unpublished but have been submitted to a journal and accepted for publication may be cited with the name of the journal followed by “in press.” In all other cases, references must be made to “unpublished work” or “personal communication.”
5. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Acknowledge financial support, advice, or other kinds of assistance at the end of the paper.
6. REPRINTS
Five reprints of the Russian-language edition and the English-language edition will be supplied free of charge with each article. The journal does not carry a page charge for contributions.
7. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THE PAPER
OF ELECTRONIC VERSION OF THE PAPER The presence of an electronic version of the article improves considerably the quality of manuscript prep-aration for publication and facilitates the editorial process. Therefore, submission of the electronic version by the authors is strongly encouraged. Listed below are the guidelines for its preparation.
7.1. General Statements
Electronic version of the paper is submitted by the author to the Editorial Office after it is accepted for publication and after its refereeing, and should be identical to the edited print-out text. Corrections and additions introduced without the consent of Editorial Office will not be taken into account. Moreover, such electronic version cannot be used. The electronic version of the paper should include: the file containing the text of the paper and file(s) containing figures. If the article with figures is submitted as one file, it is required to additionally submit separate files with the figures. The files must be accompanied by a list (which can also be as a file) which has to contain: disk format, operating system, name of the word processor, filenames, the journal title, the article title, surname and initials of the author(s). Files can be submitted on 3.5" floppy disks, via E-mail or FTP. To avoid technical errors it is highly recommended to test the floppy and check the files for viruses. For issues concerning preparation of graphs and texts, as well as FTP data transfer, please contact the Editorial Office for Physical Journals at (095) 335-8366 or by E-mail at ced@maik.ru.
7.2. Preparation of the Electronic Version of the Materials
Text body The preferred word processor for the text body of the article is Microsoft Word for Windows. Please, use standard Windows TrueType fonts when typing (e.g., Times New Roman, Courier New, Arial, etc.) Please note, that text lines within a paragraph should not be separated by the end-of-line character (usually, the Enter key). Texts with such characters within a paragraph cannot be used. Graphic material When preparing graphic files, please use the following guidelines: For bitmap images use the TIF format at 600 dpi resolution, 256 gray scale. Vector images must be submitted in the original format in which they were created: CorelDraw (up to version 9.0), Adobe Illustrator (up to version 8.0), Free-Hand (up to version 8.0), or in the EPS format. For photographs use the TIF format at not less than 300 dpi. Graphic files must be named in such a way as to give a clear indication to which article they belong and their order. Each file should contain one figure.
