About the journal

Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging publishes reports on clinical and experimental research pertinent to human physiology in health and disease. The scope of the Journal is very broad, covering all aspects of the regulatory system in the cardiovascular, renal and pulmonary systems with special emphasis on methodological aspects. The Journal also features review articles on recent front-line research within these fields of interest.

Covered by the major abstracting services including Current Contents and Science Citation Index, Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging plays an important role in providing effective and productive communication among clinical physiologists world-wide.

Instructions to Authors

Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging is devoted to clinical and experimental research pertinent to human physiology in health and disease. Papers may include new results obtained experimentally, descriptions of new methods of general importance or new interpretations of existing results. New observations should be clearly and succinctly reported so that the purpose and outcome of the study is meaningful to scientists from a number of disciplines.
It is assumed that all investigations on human subjects described in manuscripts submitted to this journal shall have been conducted according to the principles expressed in the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by an ethics committee on human research.

All papers submitted to this journal should contain original research not previously published (except as an abstract, preliminary report or in a thesis) and not under consideration for publication elsewhere in similar form, in any language, without the consent of the editor.

Manuscripts in triplicate should be sent to the Editor:
Professor Per Wollmer
Department of Clinical Physiology

email: Clinical.Physiology@klinfys.mas.lu.se

Manuscripts will be read by the editors and two referees. Acceptance of a manuscript is based on scientific merit and presentation of the material. A manuscript returned to the author(s) for revision should be resubmitted to the editor within one month.

Copyright

All papers submitted to Clinical Physiology & Functional Imaging are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere. Please send a signed copyright form to the Editor when you submit your paper for publication. The form can be printed off and completed. If your paper is not accepted for publication this form will be destroyed and copyright reverts back to the author. We cannot publish your paper without receiving the copyright form.

Three types of paper are accepted:

1. Full-length papers

These are considered for publication provided that they describe significant, new and carefully confirmed findings and full experimental details are given. There is no limit as to length, but it should be the minimum required for precision in description of experiments and clarity of interpretation.

2. Short communications

These offer the opportunity for more rapid publication of exciting new observations. The manuscript should not occupy more than three journal pages. The author is free to choose a form which is relevant to the nature of the communication.

3. Reviews

Reviews intended to provide perspectives on developing controversial or particularly active areas of research are welcome. These reviews are normally invited but other authors are also welcome to consult The Review Articles Editor:

Preparation of papers

1. Style

Manuscripts should be written in English. Spelling should conform to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English, 6th edn.

2. Form

(a) Manuscripts should be typewritten with double spacing and a wide margin (at least 3 cm) on A4 size (206 ?294 mm) paper. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. All pages should be numbered.

(b) Page 1 should include a concise and informative Full title, the names of the authors, the names, e-mail and addresses of the establishments where the work was performed, a Short title not exceeding 60 letters, and details of to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent.

(c) Page 2 should include a Summary not exceeding 250 words and 5-8 keywords not including words in the title of the article.

(d) The following pages should include the sections:

Introduction containing the reasons for doing the work. Exhaustive reviews of the literature should be avoided. No reference to the results obtained should be made.

Methods describing the procedures used in sufficient detail to allow repetition, except for previously published methods.

Results giving concisely the observations made.

Discussion presenting succinctly the authors' interpretations of their findings in relation to previous work.

Acknowledgements of grants and assistance.

References listed in alphabetical order taking account of the first author. If the first author appears more than once the references should be placed in chronological order. The style to be used is shown in the following examples.

Katz A, Broberg S, Sahlin K & Wahren J. Muscle ammonia and amino acid metabolism during exercise in man. Clin Physiol (1986); 6: 365-379.

Fischman DA. Development of striated muscle. In: The Structure and Function of Muscle (ed. Bourne, G. H.) (1972); vol. 1, part 1, pp. 75-148. Academic Press, New York.

(Journal abbreviations are according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals.)

References to 'personal communications' and 'unpublished work' (e.g., a submitted paper not yet accepted for publication) are permitted in the text only.

In the text references should be quoted giving the author's name and the year of publications in parentheses. For more than two authors, the name of the first author is given followed by 'et al.' If more than one reference is given in the text, they should be placed in chronological order. Examples of the style to be used are: (Welch, 1967; Lin & Nicosia, 1976; Smith et al., 1976).

(e) Tables on separate pages and Figure legends grouped on one page should be at the end of the manuscript and their desired locations indicated in the margin of the text. Figure number, the names of the authors and the short title should be written on the backs of the figures. Tables should be supplied with an informative heading and should be comprehensible with minimum reference to the text.

(f) Line drawings should be photographed and submitted on glossy paper in duplicates (recommended size 13 ?18 cm).

Half-tones should only be included where it is considered essential. Half-tone illustrations should be submitted as unmounted glossy prints, and should not be retouched. Magnification should be indicated.

Colour artwork. A charge for colour will be made.  Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf

If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at:

* To read PDF files, you must have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this program, this is available as a free download from the following address:  http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

(g) Electronic artwork: We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is availabe on the BPL Homepage at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

(h) Footnotes to the text should be used sparingly and their locations should be indicated by superscript numbers. They should be typed with corresponding numbers on a separate sheet. In tables, reference to footnotes should be made using the symbols ? ? ? 排, in that order.

3. Symbols, units, abbreviations

(a) Symbols for physical units should be those of the Systeme Internationale (SI) Units. These are described in Quantities, Units and Symbols, 3rd edn. (1977). The Royal Society of Medicine, London. More familiar units may be allowed in parentheses if this facilitates the comprehension of the paper. For example, either 133.3 Pa or 133.3 Pa (1 mmHg) is permissible, but 1 mmHg alone is not, except for blood pressure which should be in mmHg. The symbol for the plural of a unit is the same as for the singular.

(b) Abbreviations will not be permitted unless their use is universally accepted. The Instructions to Authors of the Biochemical Journal provides a useful guide and further details of permissible abbreviations may be obtained from the Editor.

(c) Chemical and biochemical nomenclature should follow the Recommendations of the IUPAC-IUB Commission on Nomenclature. Details of these can be obtained in various volumes of the Biochemical Journal as outlined in Instructions to Authors or from Waldo E. Cohn, Director, NRC Office of Biochemical Nomenclature, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Box Y, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, USA.

(d) Enzymes, when first mentioned, should be written in full followed by the IUB Enzyme Commission (EC) number; approved trivial names may be subsequently used. Details of these may be obtained from the latest edition of Enzyme Nomenclature, Elsevier Publishing Co., Amsterdam.

(e) Solutions should be described in terms of molarity and use the decimal system which should be written as 1.5 mmol/l glucose, for example. In expressing the concentration of a substance in physiological fluids molarity is preferred to % or wt/vol. The SI system recommends that 'M' should be replaced by 'mol/l' and that '% (v/v)' and '% (w/v)' should be expressed as for example 'ml/l' and 'g/l'. Sufficient detail of buffer composition should be provided to enable its preparation.

(f) The name of drugs used should be the approved trivial name and when first mentioned also the full chemical name. Trade names or common names may be given in parentheses when the drug is first mentioned.

4. Statistics

The authors should use appropriate statistics to analyse their results. The statistical methods used should be stated under Methods. The following data should be presented: (1) the number of independent experiments; (2) the value of the mean; (3) the standard deviation (SD) or the standard error of the mean (SEM).

5. Human experiments

Work on humans that is submitted to the Journal should comply with the principles of the Declarations of Helsinki (1964) British Medical Journal (1964) ii, 177-178. The manuscript should contain a statement that the work has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the Institution in which it was performed and if subjects gave informed consent to participate. The editors reserve the right to reject papers in which, in their opinion, the ethical justification is questionable.

Offprints

The corresponding author will receive a pdf 'reprint' of his or her article. Printed offprints can be supplied if ordered on the offprint form which will accompany the proofs.
