Instructions to Authors
Clinical and Investigative Medicine (CIM) invites the submission of research and review articles and editorial commentaries on any subject related to clinical medicine or the understanding of normal and abnormal human function at the molecular, cellular, system or epidemiologic level. We are also interested in publishing papers in the fields of health services, ethics, medical education and health law. The Journal endorses Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals and the accompanying statements put forward by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. CIM is a peer-reviewed general medical journal that is indexed in MEDLINE and available in full text and free on the Web. The Journal is published every 2 months (February, April, June, August, October, December).
Manuscripts should be submitted to the editor, Dr. David Bevan, Rm. 132, Fitzgerald Building, 150 College St., Toronto ON M5S 3E2 or by fax (416 978-2408) or email (david.bevan@utoronto.ca) as an attachment. In all cases double space the paper and provide a word count for the text only. Please number the pages.
On a separate page provide a statement of each author's specific contributions to the paper. Sources of grant support (if any) and conflicts of interest should be stated on the cover page.
A cover letter signed by all authors and identifying the corresponding author should state that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not under consideration by any other journal. Fax copies of signatures are acceptable. If submitting electronically please also fax or mail a copy of the cover letter and signatures to the editor.
Original research
Original research articles require a descriptive title and abstract of any length that describes the Background (outline the rationale and main objective of the study), Methods (include study design, selection of study subjects, setting for the study and any important details of study instruments), Results (give main results in both absolute and relative terms and then any adjusted analyses) and finally a brief Interpretation of the main results. The body of the paper should use these same headings. References should be in numerical order of appearance, including references contained in tables and figure legends. Tables, figures and references should follow the main body of the text.
Upon receipt of the paper the editor will read it and determine if it is suitable for possible publication in CIM. If suitable, the paper will be sent to peer review. The editor will then review the manuscript and peer reviews and make a decision on publication. If revisions are required, the authors will receive detailed suggestions from the editor.
Once accepted, manuscripts will be published as soon as possible. The delay between acceptance of the final manuscript and publication is about 3 months. There are no page charges.
Review articles
We are interested in publishing scholarly narrative review articles and systematic reviews and meta-analyses on any subject. If interested in publishing a narrative review, please contact the editor or email or call Dr. Kathy Siminovitch (kathy.siminovitch@utoronto.ca; tel. 416 586-8558) or Dr. Gervais Tougas (tougasg@mcmaster.ca) for advice on how to prepare these for submission.
Perspectives and editorial commentaries
We welcome manuscripts up to 1000 words long that comment on important developments in science and medical care and education. Perspectives, edited by Dr. Eliot Phillipson, promotes discussion and debate about important current issues in medical education and research funding, training and ethics. Editorial commentaries may be on any subject. Articles and inquiries about submission of papers of this type should be addressed to the editor (Dr. David Bevan, Rm. 132, Fitzgerald Building, 150 College St., Toronto ON M5S 3E2 [david.bevan@utoronto.ca]).
