About the journal
Present-day technology makes necessary the rapid exchange of information among professionals in the field of chromatography. Because of the difficulty in solving certain analytical problems quickly and economically using only one of the chromatographic methods, the combined use of varied techniques, such as gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy, yields more exact results. Chromatographia is a monthly, international journal that meets the vital demand for the quick spread of accurate, concise information concerning chromatography and related fields. Modern analytical problems place such great demands on the accuracy, sensitivity, speed and economy of the instruments that they can only be solved by close cooperation between theorists, users and instrument manufacturers, and to this end Chromatographia permits the rapid exchange of information.
Instructions to Authors Editorial Policy
Chromatographia is an international journal for rapid communication in chromatography, electrophoresis, and associated techniques. It publishes papers on all aspects of the theory and application of chromatography.
Communications published in the journal comprise articles, short communications, reviews and letters to the editors.
Articles are intended for presentation of findings of original scientific research in unabbreviated form. Short communications on the other hand are intended for presentation of findings, which do not warrant full-length publication, or of preliminary findings for rapid publication.
Reviews are intended to evaluate the existing state of knowledge on a particular fact of chromatography. Reviews are usually solicited by the journal, however, persons interested in writing a review paper for the journal should contact the editorial office.
Letters to the editors are a forum of discussion for readers wishing to comment briefly on matters of general interest or on papers published in this journal.
The language of the journal is English. Papers from all countries will be considered for publication. The journal will only consider original papers which have not been published previously or are not considered for publication elsewhere in the same or substantially the same form in English or any other language. As a rule the opinion of reviewers with expertise in the subject of a paper will be sought before a decision is made as to whether the paper should be accepted, rejected or returned to the authors for revision. Authors will usually be notified of the decision a few weeks after submission of a paper.
Authors should prepare their manuscripts submitted to the journal exactly according to the instructions given here. Manuscripts which do not follow the format and style of the journal may be returned to the authors for revision or rejected. The journal reserves the right to make any further formal changes and language corrections necessary in a manuscript accepted for publication so that it conforms with the requirements of the journal.
Manuscripts and figures are not returned to the authors, not even upon rejection of the paper.
Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted in triplicate with a covering letter to the following address: Chromatographia Editorial Office Vieweg Publishing Abraham-Lincoln-Str. 46 65189 Wiesbaden Germany .
In addition to your 3-fold print-out you may submit your manuscript on a 3 1/2" disk in WORD or unformatted ASCII (MS-DOS on IBM-PC-compatible or Macintosh). Information on the computersystem, textsystem and data must be included.
Submission of papers must be made by the authors or the senior author and not by the head of the laboratory or a public relation office. If there is more than one author it should be stated in the letter which author is responsible for correspondence and proofs. Receipt of the manuscripts is acknowledged automatically by the editorial office.
Format and Style
All sections of the manuscripts must be typewritten on A4 paper with double-line spacing and a margin of 3cm on all four sides of the paper. The type used should be large and easy to read. Pages should be numbered consecutively. The beginning of paragraphs should be clearly shown.
The title page should contain in this order: the full title without abbreviations; the names of all authors with initials only of first names; and the department, institution and address of each author without abbreviations. An asterisk should be placed beside the name of the author responsible for inquiries and reprints.
With the exception of standard abbreviations, abbreviations should be kept to a minimum in all sections of a manuscripts and be given in parenthesis alongside the unabbreviated expression on the first use. The words 'Table' and 'Figure' should not be abbreviated. Abbreviations should not be used in the title, in summaries or headings.
Categories of Manuscripts
For further details on the format and style of individual categories of manuscripts authors should also refer to published examples in the journal.
Articles and Short Communications should contain the following sections in this order; title page, key words, summary, introduction, experimental data, results, discussion, acknowledgements (if any), references, tables and/or figures. The Summary should state in no more than 50 to 100 words the purpose of the study, basic procedures, main findings and conclusions. The Introduction should outline the purpose of the study and provide background information. In the Experimental section sufficient detail should be given so that experiments can be repeated. The authors' results only, without interpretation, should be presented in the Results section; results in tables and figures should not be repeated unnecessarily in the text. Discussion section should provide an interpretation of the results in realtion to findings of other investigators; Conclusions should be state clearly.
Reviews should consist of a title page, summary, text, references, tables and/or figures (if any). Headed sub-divisions within the text are desirable but at the discretion of the author. The abstract should summarize in no more than 100 words the contents of the review and state any conclusions drawn.
Letters to the Editors should not exeed three typewritten pages in length. A short title should be placed at the start of the text and the names of the authors with address at the end of the text. There should generally be no more than three authors and five references.
References
References should be listed at the end of the manuscript in the order cited in the text and numbered consecutively; each reference must be cited in the text by the number in square brackets [ ].
In the reference list, articles in periodicals [1], monographs [2], and multi-author books [3] should be cited in accordance with the following samples: [1] Franco, P.; L鋗merhofer, M.; Klaus, P.M.; Lindner, W. Chromatographia 2000, 51, 139?146. [2] Engelhardt, H.; Beck, W.; Schmitt, T. Capillary Electrophoresis, Vieweg, Wiesbaden, 1995. [3] Gyllenhaal, O.; Karlsson, A.; Vessman, J. In Supercritical Fluid Chromatography with Packed Columns: Anton, K.; Berger, C., Eds, Marcel Dekker, New York, 1998. Abbreviations for the titles of journals should follow the system used by Chemical Abstracts. Articles not yet published should be given as either .in press' or .submitted for publication'; in both cases the journal should be specified.
Figures and Tables
Figures should be numbered in arabic numerals, Tables in Roman numerals. The words 'Figure' and 'Table' should not be abbreviated in either the text or legends. A text reference must exist for each figure and table. Graphs like chromatograms and spectra, or other figures, should preferably be submitted on disk as an electronic file or in the form of black-and-white photographic or other prints, or original drawings. It is important that the size of the lettering on the figure should be adequate so that even after necessary reduction, they are legible. Each figure must be on a separate page and must show figure number and the author's name. The figure should have only the absolutely necessary information (e. g., identification of the axes) written on the figure: all other information should be given in the figure caption. A list of figure captions should be typed on a separate page, attached to the manuscripts. The figures should preferably be of such a size that the same degree of reduction can be applied to all of them. The size of the figures should preferably not exceed the size of the text pages. Simple straight-line graphs (such as calibration lines) are not acceptable, because they can readily be described in the text by means of an equation or a sentence. Claims of linearity should be supported by regression data that include slope and intercept, standard error and the number of data points; correlation coefficients are optional. Standard symbold should be used in line drawings; the following are available to the typesetters and can also be used in the captions:
Tables, numbered in Roman numerals, must be typewritten with the legend above the table. Each table should be on a separate page. Only the first letter of the first word of legends and headings at the top and at the side should be capitalized. Tables must not be submitted as photographs.
Symbols and Units
Widely accepted symbols and abbreviations and SI units should be used. Abbreviations used in tables and figures should be explained in the captions. In general, the recommendations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) should be followed. In the Appendix the abbreviations and symbols that may be used without definition are given.
Proofs and Reprints
Authors receive proofs of all categories of manuscripts and reprints of all categories except letters to the editors. Proofs are air mailed directly to the author, and should be corrected and returned air mailed immediately. For technical reasons only minor changes can be made. A reprint order form is sent with the proofs. Authors receive 75 reprints free of charge; further reprints can be ordered at the author's own expense.
Copyright
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a letter signed by the senior author stating that (a) the material discussed therein has not been published before; (b) the manuscript has not been previously submitted to any other journal; and (c) that the authors transfer the copyright to the publisher of Chromatographia. If the manuscript had been previously submitted to any other journal but its publication rejected for any reasons this should be stated. Authors employed by Government laboratories or agencies with special copyright regulations should state this in the letter. The whole literary matter (including text, tables, figures, diagrams and photographs) in Chromatographia is copyrighted. Papers that are accepted for publication must not be published elsewhere either wholly or partly, without the written permission of the Publisher. This also refers to later utilization of the material included in the original paper.
