Forschung befasst.

Introduction

‘Chirurgische Gastroenterologie’ is a peer-reviewed journal intended to provide a forum for interdisciplinary discussion of relevant and current questions of visceral surgery, gastroenterology and hepatology.

General Information and Publishing Rights

Manuscripts for publication should be submitted in quadruplicate (each copy accompanied by a complete set of figures and tables) to:

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Bittner
Marienhospital
Boheimstr. 37
D–70199 Stuttgart (Deutschland)
Tel. 0711/64 89 22 01
Fax 0711/64 89 22 13

Authors should always keep a copy of the manuscript.

In a covering letter all authors must confirm with their signature that the submitted paper or parts of it (with the exception of congress reports) has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All authors have to confirm that they have read the manuscript and agree to have it published in the submitted form.

It is the authors?responsibility to obtain permission from other publishers to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc.

Acceptance of a manuscript is based on the evaluation by several reviewers (peer review).

Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, all rights are retained by the publisher. The publication, or parts of it, may neither be translated into other languages nor reproduced by any mechanical or electronic means (including photocopying, recording, and microfilm) nor stored in a retrieval system without the publisher抯 written permission.

Ethical and Legal Prerequisites: Manuscripts involving examinations of probands and patients must include a statement that the trial protocol has been approved by an ethics committee and thus meets the standards of the Declaration of Helsinki in its revised version of 1975 and its amendments made in 1983, 1989, and 1996 [JAMA 1997;277:925–926].

Accordingly, the proband抯 informed consent has to be included in the manuscript. Information suitable to reveal the proband抯 identity is to be avoided.

Experiments involving animals demand consent as well and must meet the requirements of German laws for the protection of animals in their current version. A reference to this approval must be included in the manuscript. Articles from countries other than Germany must include a comparable note.

Categories: Contributions are classified as Original Article, Contributions to the Main Theme, Interdisciplinary Discussion and to Pre- and Postoperative Therapy as well as Minimal Invasive Surgery.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Please print the manuscript 1 1/2-spaced with 3-cm margins (left and right).

Original articles should not exceed 5 printed pages (15 manuscript pages). Each additional complete or partial page to print will be charged to the author.

Please check the final copy carefully for consistent terminology and correct spelling. Accepted manuscripts are edited according to the publisher’s style.

General information for the preparation of manuscripts may be found in ‘Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals’ by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors as published in Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36–47 (http://www.wame.org/rsources.htm#policies).

Electronic Manuscript Submission: The final version of the manuscript must be accompanied by a disk exactly matching the printed version. Please see ‘Guidelines for Electronic Manuscript Submission’ for assistance in preparing manuscripts on disk.

Arrangement

All pages should be numbered consecutively, starting with the title page.

Articles should be structured as follows: Key Words and Summary, Introduction, Material and Methods (optionally Patients and Methods), Results, Discussion, optionally Acknowledgements, References, tables, figure legends, and figures.

The title page must include the following information: Title and short title in English and German, each author抯 full name, followed by his respective affiliation; exact postal address of the corresponding author including phone and fax numbers as well as e-mail address.

Articles must contain an English and a German summary (translation by the editor is possible) of not more than 250 words. Abstracts should not include any references, tables, figures, or references to figures and tables. If it is inevitable to cite a reference, complete publication data must be given.

Each article must have 3–5 key words (English and German). If possible, use terms from the Medical Subject Headings List (MeSH) of Index Medicus (www.nlm.nih.gov).

Footnotes should be used only in tables.

Please use abbreviations as economically as possible. When using uncommon abbreviations, spell out the term in full at the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, e.g. adenosine monophosphate (AMP).

When first mentioned, registered trade names must be marked with the superscript registration symbol ® or ™. It is the sole responsibility of the author to ensure that this rule is followed properly.

Acknowledgements should be placed directly after the text and before the list of references.

The number of figures and tables should be kept low. They are listed in the text as (fig. 1) and (table 1). Data explained in tables need not be repeated in the text. Figure legends must be listed together on a separate page. Figure and table legends should be kept short and precise.

Figures should be submitted in triplicate, 1 original and 2 copies. Please mark on the back the first author抯 name, a short form of the title, the 憈op?instruction, and the number of the figure. The quality of the illustrations printed depends on the quality of the originals provided.

Color illustrations are reproduced at the author’s expense. Each one is charged to the author at EUR 235.– as a contribution to the additional reproduction and color printing costs.

Reference

The list of references should include only the publications cited in the text. The list should not exceed 60 references for Reviews and 40 for Short Reviews.

References must be numbered sequentially in the order cited in the text. In the text identify references by Arabic numerals in square brackets.

In each reference all authors should be named; the abbreviation ‘et al.’ is to be avoided. If there are more than 25 authors, list the first 24 plus the last author,
then ‘et al.’.

It is recommended to quote only articles already published or accepted for publication. Please avoid ‘in preparation’ or ‘personal communication’.

Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct citation.

Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus system (www.nlm.nih.gov).

Examples for references:

(a) Papers published in periodicals: Lelie PN, Cuypers HTM, van Drimmelen AAJ, Quint WGV: Quality assessment of hepatitis C virus nucleic acid amplification methods. An international proficiency study. Infusionsther Transfusionsmed 1998;25:102–110.

(b) Edited books: Hardy WD Jr, Essex M: FeLV-induced feline acquired immune deficiency syndrome: A model for human AIDS; in Klein E (ed): Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Prog Allergy. Basel, Karger, 1986, vol 37, pp 353–376.

(c) Monographs: Schaefer UW, Beelen DW: Bone Marrow Transplantation, ed 2, revised. Basel, Karger, 1996.

Galley Proofs

The edited manuscript and the galley proofs are forwarded to the corresponding author together with a reprint order form.

The author is asked to check the galleys against the manuscript and to mark necessary corrections in the galley proofs.

Correspondence regarding accepted manuscripts and proofs should be directed to the publisher

S. Karger GmbH
Dr. Sven Riestenpatt
Lörracher Straße 16a
D–79115 Freiburg
E-Mail S.Riestenpatt@karger.de

Costs and Reprints

Corrections to the galley proofs resulting in expenses of more than 10% of the original typesetting costs will be charged to the author.

If a paper exceeds the allotted size and is not abridged by the author, each additional printed page is charged to the author at EUR 335.–.

The corresponding author receives 25 reprints free of charge.

Guidelines for Electronic Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a disk exactly matching the printed version. Please check the disk with a virus detection program.

Do not use programs for file compression.

Label the disk with the title of the manuscript, the first author’s name, the platform, and the version of software used. We accept disks in Macintosh or MS-DOS (Windows) format. When preparing a manuscript, use the document mode or its equivalent in the word-processing program. If possible, save the document in Word format. If a non-Western version of the word-processing program is used to prepare the manuscript, save the text in the rich-text format (RTF). The following word-processing packages are currently acceptable: Macintosh: any program; IBM and compatibles: Word including Word 97 and WordPerfect up to version 5.1.

Please do not include in the file any layout instructions such as placements for graphics. The fonts Times and Symbol are recommended.

The text should be justified to the left. Avoid end-of-line hyphenation. Use carriage returns only to end heading and paragraphs, not to break lines of text.

Use only one format (normal) for the document; to structure the text you may use tabs. Please do not include any headers, footers, or footnotes.

Ensure that all characters are correctly represented throughout the manuscript: e.g.,
1 (one) and l (letter), 0 (zero) and O (letter), X (letter) and x (multiplication sign).

Insert only one space after a period and none before it.

Please save tables and figures each as separate files, do not integrate them in the text.

Figures: Graphics, e.g. figures, schemes, etc., should be saved as separate files. Most packages for creating them will allow the user to choose a format in which to save a file. TIFF, PostScript, or EPS are preferred.

It should be possible to identify the figure by its filename. All figures must be submitted additionally as camera-ready copies.

References: Use the style as described in the general reference section above, i.e., no comma after the last name, no period after the initials. The semicolon and colon after the year of publication and the volume number, respectively, should not be followed by spaces. Please give the first and the last page of the article, separated by a dash.
Wrong: Infusionsther. Transfusionsmed. 1998; 25: 160 – 3.
Correct: Infusionsther Transfusionsmed 1998;25:160–163.
