About the journal

The Chinese Journal of Physiology, the official journal of the Chinese Physiological Society in Taiwan, the Republic of China, was first published more than thirty years ago. It was initiated by a group of physiologists in Taiwan to publish original research articles in every aspect of physiology. It started as a semiannual publication and was expanded to be a quarterly journal since six years ago. As one of the top biomedical journals in Taiwan, it has received the Scientific Publication Award from the National Science Council there annually since 1992. In view of the rapid developments in physiology research and the need for international scientific communication, this journal has decided to further extend its scope to become an international journal. On January 1, 1996, the Editorial Office has been moved to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), Academia Sinica, Taipei, the top research institute in Taiwan. We are honored to have Dr. Shu Chien from the University of California, San Diego to be the Honorary Editor of this Journal. Dr. Chien was the President of the American Physiological Society from 1990 to 1991. Dr. Eminy H.Y. Lee from IBMS serves as the Chief Editor. The Chinese Journal of Physiology publishes primarily original, full-length research articles, but it also accepts review articles and short communications. We sincerely invite you to submit your manuscript to this journal. We also hope that you would introduce this journal to your colleagues and friends for manuscript submission and journal subscription. The annual subscription rate is US$80 (NT$2000) for individual and US$120 (NT$3000) for institution. We hope to work together with you to make this journal an outstanding international journal.

Instructions to Authors
Original papers concerned with all fields of physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, and biochemistry and written in English are considered for publication in the Chinese Journal of Physiology. Send original and two copies of each manuscript, including all illustrative materials, to:

To facilitate editorial processing, the following points with regard to the preparation of manuscript should be noted.
- Manuscripts of any length are admissible. Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced with margins on one side of good quality paper. Pages should be numbered in lower right-hand corner. Authors may be requested to retype manuscripts that are difficult to read.
- The manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: title page, abstract, key words, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables, figure legends, and illustrations (line-drawings, graphs and halftones).
- The title page should contain the complete article title, a running page headline not to exceed 50 characters, the name of Institute where the work was done, the present postal address if different from that of the Institute.
- References cited in the text should be by Arabic numericals in parenthesis and not by the names of the authors. The references list should be in alphabetical order and numbered consecutively. The style of citation should be as follows:
Journal Articles. Last name of first author, followed by initials; last names of each coauthor followed by initials, title of article (first word only capitalized); name of journal (abbreviated as in Index Medicus, published by the
National Library of Medicine, USA), volume, inclusive pages, and year. Examples:
- D. Childers, R.W., Merideth, J. and Moe, G.K. Supernormality in Bachmann's bundle: an in vivo and in vitro study. Circ. Res. 22:363-370,1968.
- Chen, H.I., Shih, W.J. and Chen, T.P. A scientiphotographic study of pulmonary edema and hemorrhage induced by cerebral compression and norepinephrine. Chin. J. Physiol. 22:65-73, 1976.
Book References. Author(s) as above; title of book (main words capitalized); city of publication; publisher; year and pages. Examples:

Abstracts. An abstract properly identified (Abstract) may be cited only when it is the sole source. Examples:
- Turkenkopf, 1., Olsen, J. and Johnson, P.R. Hepatic lipogenic enzyme activity in the preobese Zucker rat (fafa) (Abstract). Federation Proc. 38:547,1979.
- Chang, J.P., Morgan, R.O. and Catt, K.J. Inositol phosphates, diacyiglycerol, and arachidonic acid in GnRH action (Abstract 48). The 1st International Congress of Neuroendocrinology, San Francisco, USA, 1986,

- Abbreviations and symbols for units of measurement should conform to international recommendation.
- Tables should be typed on separate sheets, be numbered in Arabic numerals and be accompanied by adequate headings. Explanatory matter should appear in foot notes that are identified by superscript letters or asterisks.
Their appropriate position in the text should be indicated by a note in the margin.
- Figures should be printed on glossy paper, be large enough for reproduction and be identified in pencil on the reverse side. Figure legends should be typed separately.
- Halftones (Photographs) must be in black and white and large enough for reproduction.
- Color plates are at the expense of the author.
- Manuscripts submitted as Short Communications should be concise and contain short technical notes, or preliminary experimental results. They should not exceed a total of five printed pages and not include more than three illustrations. The abstract for a Short Communication should not exceed 200 words. The editors reserve the right to decide what constitutes a Short Communication. Review Articles are published usually upon invitation to outstanding scientists on special topics.
- There is no page charge for papers. Fifty reprints of papers accepted for publication will be sent to authors free of charge. Additional reprints may be ordered.
