The publisher reserves copyright on all published material and material may not be reproduced without the written permission of the publisher. Statements and opinions are the responsibility of the authors. Written approval by the local human institutional review committee must be stated in the manuscript.
Instructions to Authors
GENERAL: Style should conform to AUniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals@ prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and published in Ann Intern Med 1997;126:36-47, Can Med Assoc J 1997;156:270-277 and available on the web at http://www.cma.ca/mwc/uniform.htm. The manuscript should be formatted either in WordPerfect or Word, with double-spacing throughout, on 82 x 11" paper with 1" margins all around. Arrange the manuscript as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references, figure legends, tables and figures. Number the pages consecutively, beginning with the title page as one. The last name of the first author should be typed at the top right hand corner of each page.
TITLE PAGE : The title, authors= names (including full first or middle names and qualifications) and a short running title of 45 characters should appear on the title page. Include the name of the institution from which the work originated plus the full name, exact mailing address with postal code, telephone and fax numbers plus e-mail address of the author to whom communication, proofs and requests for reprints should be sent.

ABSTRACT : On a separate page type an abstract of 100 to 250 words for major articles (including review articles), 50 to 100 words for case reports. The abstract should be substantive rather than purely descriptive and prepared in an impersonal style, i.e., no >we= or >our=. Abbreviations other than for standard units of measurement should not be used. At the end of the abstract, include a list of two to six key words and subjects for indexing purposes.
TEXT : Appropriate headings and subheadings should be provided in the methods, results and discussion sections. References, figures and tables should be cited in the text with numbers assigned by the order of mention in the text. Brief acknowledgments may appear at the end of the text, before the references.

REFERENCES: Personal communications, manuscripts in preparation and other unpublished data are not cited in the reference list but may be mentioned in the text in parentheses. Identify references in the text by Arabic numerals in parentheses on the line. References are typed, double-spaced, separate from the text and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. (References cited in figures and tables, but not in the text, should be numbered consecutively following the text references.) Journal references should contain inclusive page numbers; book references specific page numbers. Indicate abstracts by >Abst= and letters by >Lett= in parentheses. Abbreviations of journals should conform to those used in Index Medicus, National Library of Medicine. The style and punctuation of the references are as follows:

Periodicals: List all authors if six or fewer; otherwise list first three and add >et al=. Do not use periods after authors= initials.

FIGURE LEGENDS Type double-spaced, separate from the text with figure numbers corresponding to the order in which figures are presented in the text. Identify all abbreviations appearing on figures in alphabetical order at the end of each legend. Enough information should be given to allow interpretation of the figure without reference to the text. Written permission from the publisher and author to reproduce any previously published figures must be included. Figure legends should not appear on actual figures.

TABLES On separate sheets type double-spaced all tables with table number above the table and explanatory notes below. Table numbers should appear in Arabic and correspond with the order of the tables in the text. Footnote each table with alphabetical listing of all abbreviations used. Ensure that tables are self explanatory and that the data are not duplicated in the text. Written permission from the publisher and author to reproduce any previously published tables must be included.

FIGURES Submit three sets of unmounted glossy proofs and drawings. Artwork will not be returned. Figures are to be no larger than 22 x 28 cm (82 x 11"). The lettering on the figures should be sufficiently large to withstand reduction. Black ink should be used for all line drawings. Decimals, lines, etc, must be strong enough for reproduction. Place crop marks on photomicrographs to show essential field and designated special features with arrows (which must contrast in colour with the background). In light black pencil indicate the first author=s last name, figure number and >top= location on the back of each illustration. Figures are limited to the number necessary for clarity. At the publisher=s discretion colour photographs may be printed at the author=s expense. There is no charge for black and white illustrations.

REPRINTS: Single reprints may be obtained from the author. Reprints in quantity must be purchased from The Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology. Reprints may not be purchased without the author=s permission.
