Detailed topics include design strategies; usability and adaptability; feedback for the design team, client and contractors; material, component and systems performance; alternative and new technologies; organizational, management and resource issues; human factors; environmental and health issues; cost and life cycle issues; buildability; building procurement and selection criteria; sustainability criteria, measurement and practices; risk management; construction law, regulation and governance; management and validation of facilities in use; implementing, managing and practising innovation; visualisation and information technologies; identifying user and/or market needs.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

1. Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted in English and must be original, unpublished work not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Four copies of the manuscript together with original figures and tables must be submitted along with a complete version on floppy disk to the Editor: Richard Lorch, 43 Saint George's Avenue, London N7 OAJ, UK. The floppy disk (diskette) should be in DOS or Macintosh formats, preferably in Rich Text Format (.rtf). It will be assumed that authors will keep a copy of their manuscript. Manuscripts and disks are not returned to the author.

2. Effective communication
The paper should be written and arranged in a style that is succinct and easily followed. An informative but short title, a concise abstract and keywords and a well-written introduction will help achieve this. Simple language, short sentences and a good use of headings all help to communicate information more effectively. Discursive treatments of the subject matter are discouraged. Figures should be used to aid the clarity of the paper. The reader should be carefully guided through the paper. Always think about your reader.

3. Manuscript

  1. Length: Although there is no length limitation, papers should fall within the range of 2000-7000 words. Authors are requested to state how many words the paper contains.
  2. Layout: The manuscript must be in English, typed and double spaced on one side of A4 paper only, with a 4cm margin on the left-hand side. The pages should be numbered consecutively. There should be no loose addenda or notes or other explanatory material. The manuscript should be arranged under headings and sub-headings.
  3. Title page: The first page of the manuscript must contain the full title, a secondary running title of not more than 75 characters and spaces, the name(s) , the affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s) and the name, address, telephone, fax and email of the author who will be responsible for correspondence and correcting proofs.
  4. Abstract and keywords: An abstract and keywords should be included. The abstract must not exceed 200 words and must precis the paper giving a clear indication of the conclusions and applications of the paper, keywords must be carefully selected to facilitate readers' search.
  5. Illustrations: Illustrations must accompany the manuscript but should not be included in the text. Photographs and line drawings should be referred to as 'Fig 2' etc. They should be numbered in the order in which they are referred to in the text. A separate sheet with a list of illustrations and captions must be provided. Illustrations should be submitted in a form ready for reproduction. Diagrams and drawings should be drawn in black Indian ink on white card or tracing paper or alternatively be high quality laser computer print-outs from reputable computer software drawing packages.

Figures will normally be reduced in size on reproduction and authors should draw with this in mind. With a reduction of 2:1 in mind the authors should use lines not less than 0.2Smm thick, and upper and lower case lettering, the capitals of which should be 4mm high. Typewritten annotations are not acceptable. Photographs should ideally be black and white glossy prints. Each should have lightly written on the back the author's name, the figure number and an indication of which edge is the top. Where lettering is to appear on the photograph, two prints should be supplied, one of which should be left unlettered. Manuscripts deficient in presentation may exceptionally be considered for publication subject to the editor's approval.
  6. Symbols, abbreviations and conventions: Symbols, abbreviations and conventions in papers must follow the SystOme International d'Unitos (SI units). Where non-standard abbreviations are used, the word(s) to be abbreviated should be written out in full on the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses.
  7. References: The Harvard system is used. References in the text should be quoted in the following manner: Smith (1975) or Brown and Green, 1976) or if there are more than two authors, Jones et al. (1980). References should be collected at the end of the paper in alphabetical order by the first author's surname. If references to the same author have the same year, they should be differentiated by using 1980a and 1980b etc. The style should follow the examples below:

Bon, R. (1997) The futre of international construction. Building Research and Information 25, 137-41.

    Stone, P.A. (1980) Building Design Evaluation: Costs-in-use. E & FN Spon, London.

Barrett, S. (1981) Implementaion of public policy. In Policy and Action, Barrett, S. and Fudge, C. (eds), Chapman & Hall, London, pp.1-33.

If no person is named as the author the body should be used ( for example: Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (1980) Report on Urban Planning Methods, London.
  8. Endnotes: A limited number of explanatory notes is permissible. These should be numbered 1, 2, 3 consecutively in the text and denoted by superscripts. They should be typed on a separate sheet of paper at the end of the text. Endnotes should not be used for academic or project citations.

4. Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for correction and should be returned directly to the publisher within three days of receipt. The difficulty and expense involved in making amendments at proof stage makes it essential for authors to prepare their manuscript carefully: any alterations to the original text are strongly discouraged and may be charged to the author. Our aim ia rapid publication: this will be helped if authors provide good copy following the above instructions, and return their proofs as quickly as possible.

5. Early Electronic Offprints:
Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author抯 preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.

6. Copyright
Submission of an article to this Journal is taken to imply that it represents original, unpublished work, not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors will be asked to transfer the copyright for their papers to the Publisher if and when the paper is accepted for publication, using the form provided. The copyright covers the exclusive use rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any reproduction of a similar nature, and translations. Permission to publish illustrations must be obtained by the author before submission and any acknowledgements should be included in the figure captions. Should the author wish to have the article published elsewhere, such as in an anthology, the author must write to the publisher with details and seek consent from the publisher which will normally be given provided acknowledged of the original source is provided.
