About the journal

British Journal of Neurosurgery is a leading international forum for debate in the field of neurosurgery, publishing original peer-reviewed articles of the highest quality, along with comment and correspondence on all topics of current interest to neurosurgeons worldwide.

Coverage includes all aspects of case assessment and surgical practice, as well as wide-ranging research, with an emphasis on clinical rather than experimental material. Special emphasis is placed on postgraduate education with review articles on basic neurosciences and on the theory behind advances in techniques, investigation and clinical management. All papers are submitted to rigorous and independent peer-review, ensuring the journal's wide citation and its appearance in the major abstracting and indexing services.

British Journal of Neurosurgery is published in association with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

The British Journal of Neurosurgery welcomes original contributions from all parts of the world. Papers are accepted for consideration on the understanding that their contents have not been published in whole or in part elsewhere, that they are subject to editorial revision, and that the Editor is responsible for the order of publication. When relevant, authors must include a statement on the ethical aspects of their research. Papers involving experiments on live animals will be considered for publication provided that the experiments have been conducted in line with British Home Office Regulations and provided that they do not appear to have caused any suffering to the animals concerned.

Editorials are normally written by invitation but the editor will be happy to consider submitted editorials. It should be stressed that the opinions expressed in editorials are those of the writer alone. They are in no way intended to express the official viewpoint of the Journal, its Management Board, or the Society of British Neurological Surgeons.

Peer review. All original articles, technical notes and short reports are sent for peer review and the referees' comments on the paper will normally be transmitted (anonymously) to the authors. Review articles and editorials are published at the invitation of the editor.

Manuscripts, should be written in English and typed doublespaced (including references, and figure legends) on one side of white A4 size paper with a margin of 3 cm.

Submit the original and two good quality photocopies of all written material and illustrations. The author should retain a copy for reference. Address manuscripts to: Editorial Office, British Journal of Neurosurgery, Academic Neurosurgery Unit, Box 167, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 2QQ, United Kingdom, accompanied by a covering letter signed by all authors. Papers accepted become the copyright of the journal unless otherwise specifically agreed.

Manuscripts should be submitted with two consecutive title pages. On the first page should appear the short title of not more than 45 characters to use as a running head, and some indication whether the manuscript is intended as an 'original paper' or a 'short report'. A complete title should be on the second page with the names of authors (initials and last name of each author, no title or degrees) as well as the address of the authors (department, hospital, and country). The full address (including fax numbers and Email address if available) should be given of the author to whom correspondence and requests for offprints should be directed. Editorial correspondence will be directed only to the person given as corresponding author. The author chosen as corresponding author should be somebody whose address is likely to be fixed for the period up until publication and for at least a year thereafter. Preferably, the corresponding author should be the most senior author - that is a person whose address is not likely to change.

No more than 4 authors will be accepted on an original paper and no more than 3 authors on a short report. If the numbers of authors exceed these then the names in excess of the permitted number will be deleted.

The recommended length of an original paper is up to 5–6 printed pages (10–12 pages of typed manuscript, including tables and illustrations). Short reports should be limited to 2–3 printed pages (4–6 pages of typescript, including tables and illustrations). The first page of the text should be an abstract of not more than 150 words for original papers and not more than 50 words for short reports. Below the abstract, 3–10 key words (or short phrases) should be provided to assist in cross-indexing. The text in original papers should be presented under the headings: Introduction, Material(s) and Method(s), Results, Discussion, Conclusion(s) and Acknowledgements.

Long articles may need subheadings to clarify their content, especially in the Results and Discussion sections. The text in short reports should be divided under the headings: Introduction, Case or Technical Report(s), Conclusion(s) and Acknowledgements.

Electronic Submissions. Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in both hard copy paper and electronic disk forms. It is essential that the hard copy (paper) version exactly matches the material on disk. Please print out the hard copy from the disk you are sending. Submit three printed copies of the final version with the disk to the journal's editorial office. Save all files on a standard 3.5 inch high-density disk. We prefer to receive disks in Microsoft Word in a PC format, but can translate from most other common word processing programs as well as Macs. Please specify which program you have used. Do not save your files as "text only" or "read only".

Spelling should be in English not American style, eg. tumour, haemorrhage, as opposed to tumor, hemorrhage, etc.

References should be denoted in the text by superscript numbers and listed at the end of the paper in the order in which they appear. Quote the titles of journals as abbreviated in Index Medicus.

References should be cited according to the Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (4th edition, 1993) (the "Vancouver rules"), as follows:

Article in a journal:
Nichols DA. Endovascular treatment of the acutely ruptured intracranial aneurysm. J Neurosurg 1993;79:1–2.

(list all authors, but if the number exceeds six, give six followed by et al.)

Monograph:
Blume WT, Kaibara M. Atlas of adult electroencephalography. New York: Raven Press, 1994.

Chapter in a book:
Bender MB. The medical treatment of chronic subdural haematoma. In: Morley TP, editor. Current controversies in neurosurgery. Philadelphia: WB Saunders, 1976:556–60.

Tables and illustrations. Type each table double-spaced on a separate sheet. Number the tables consecutively (roman numerals) and supply a brief title for each. Indicate in the left-hand margin of the manuscript the approximate position for each table and figure.

Figures should be professionally drawn and photographed. Instead of original drawings, X-rays, and other material, send sharp glossy black-and-white photographic prints. Each figure should have a label pasted on its back indicating the number of the figure (arabic numerals), the names of the authors, and the top of the figure.

Costs for colour illustrations must be borne by the authors.

Offprints. Fifty offprints will be supplied free of charge at the time of publication. Additional offprints can be supplied if ordered on the offprint order form.

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in The Neurosurgical Foundation. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised.

Supplements. Graduate theses, monographs or proceedings of symposia may be accepted as supplements to British Journal of Neurosurgery following application to the Editor. Printing costs will be borne by the authors and distribution costs by the Journal.

Discussion of Papers. Questions or criticisms concerning recently published papers may be sent to the Editor, who will refer them to the authors. The readers' comments and authors' replies may subsequently be published together. The Journal features a correspondence column.

Disclaimer. Whilst every effort is made by the publisher and Editorial Board to ensure there are no inaccuracies in this Journal, statements, opinions and data appearing in the articles and advertisements herein are the responsibility of the authors and advertisers concerned. The Editors and Publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material.
