About the journal

The Biology and Technological Research Institute - IBPT, initiated in 1946, the publication of Arquivos de Biologia e Tecnologia, with the objective to disseminate the researches carried by its technician. Published annually up to 1956, it was interrupted from 1957 to 1965, restarted with annual editions until the year of 1972. From 1973 to 1979 the magazine was published on a semesterly basis and in 1980 3 fascicles were published. From 1981 it started to be edited quarterly in March, June, September and December, this publication was kept until the present date.

Since its creation up to 1979, it published a great volume of research works elaborated by the IBPT's technicians, from 1980, it started to dedicate the first fascicle of each year to the summaries of the presented works in the Annual Meetings of the Brazilian Society of Biochemist - SBBQ, realized in Caxambu City - MG. Until 1989, 4,125 summaries were published, then the Arquivos de Biologia e Tecnologia stopped the edition of these summaries.

From 1998 the publication suffered several modifications, including the change of its name to Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology - BABT, the publication is registered under ISSN number 1516-8913. Since then, it only accepts works in the English language, what facilitates the dissemination of articles among the international scientific community, besides promoting the knowledge generated by the Brazilian researchers, extending its recognition among this community

Krzyzanowski & Ferreira, with the objective to subsidize supporting programs to the scientific publications of FAPESP - Research-Support Foundation of S鉶 Paulo State, executed a proposing work for an conjoined evaluation of merit (content) and performance (form) of current Brazilian technical and scientific periodics, that was supported by CNPq - National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development and by FINEP - Studies and Projects Financier, using international evaluation criterions.

In 1998, the same criteria were used to evaluate the BABT's performance. As the merit evaluation needs to be made by experts in the field, at that time only the form evaluation was chosen, which considers the following: standardization, duration, regularity, indexation of the publication in international databases, broadcasting (purchase, exchange, donation), collection existence in the libraries - document delivery program - COMUT, contribution of authors and division of content. Using these criteria and the proposed punctuation by the authors, the Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology - BABT scored 66 points which classifies it as a "Good" scientific and technical publication.

However, some significant improvements still need to be implemented to raise its national and international scope, which include the modernization of its editoral and diffusion process among the international scientific community

The use of the telecommunications networks for electronic transmission of e-mails is the great change at the end of this century. In the knowledge age, this is a changing trend that modifies the communication process of science, becoming more agile, faster less onerous. With the intensive use of information technology (TI), the traditional methods of scientific publication production gained more flexibility and new possibilities in the technical aspects, besides a bigger efficiency in the management and economic aspects. Currently, only the Summaries (Abstracts) of the Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology - BABT are available on the Internet, in the following URL: http://www.tecpar.br

Its abbreviated title, Braz. arch. biol. technol., should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

Instructions to Authors

 Scope

The Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, publishes original research papers, Short notes and Review articles in English in the interdisciplinary areas of biological sciences and engineering/technology.

Preparation of manuscripts

Submission of paper implies that it has not been published or being considered for publication elsewhere. Care should be taken to prepare a compact manuscript with precision in presentation, which will help authors in its acceptance. All the papers are subjected to review by referees.

Manuscript

Three copies of the single-spaced typed manuscript (maximum 12 pages) on a high grade A-4 size paper (210x297 mm), with margins (left 25, right 20, superior and inferior 30 mm) should be prepared. This should be divided under the following headings: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, RESUMO, REFERENCES. These headings should be typed in bold upper case (12 font).

Title

The title (18 font, bold) of the paper should clearly reflect its contents. It should be followed by the name(s) of author(s) with expanded initials (12 font, bold) and the address(s) (italic, 10 font) of the institution(s) where the work has been carried out.

ABSTRACT

Each paper should be provided with an abstract (italic) of 100-150 words, describing briefly on the purpose and results of the study. It should be prepared as concisely as possible.

Key words

Authors should provide three to six key words that will be used in indexing their paper.

INTRODUCTION

This should describe the background and relevant information about the work. It should also state the objective of the work.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Authors must take care in providing sufficient details so that others can repeat the work. Standard procedures need not be described in detail.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Results and Discussion may be presented separately or in combined form (authors may decide easier way for them). Preliminary work or less relevant results are not to be described. The reproducibility of the results, including the number of times the experiment was conducted and the number of replicate samples should be stated clearly.

RESUMO

An abstract of the paper should also be prepared in Portuguese and placed before the list of References. Authors from other than Latin American countries can seek the help of Editor's office to prepare Portuguese resumo of their papers.

REFERENCES

References in the text should be cited at the appropriate point by the name(s) of the author(s) and year (e.g. Raimbault & Roussos, 1996; Raimbault et al., 1997). A list of references, in the alphabetic order (10 font), should appear at the end of the manuscript. All references in the list should be indicated at some point in the text and vice versa. Unpublished results should not be included in the list. Examples of references are given below.

In journals:

In conferences:

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures, numbered consecutively with arabic numerals must be inserted at appropriate place in the text. These should be used to present only those data, which can not be described in the text.

Units and Abbreviations

The SI system should be used for all experimental data. In case other units are used, these should be added in parentheses. Only standard abbreviations for the units should be used. Full stop should not be included in the abbreviation (e.g. m, not m. or rpm, not r.p.m.). Authors should use '%' and '/' in place of 'per cent' and 'per'.

Manuscript lay-out

It is suggested that authors consult a recent issue of the journal for the style and layout. Except the title, abstract and key words, entire text should be placed in two columns on each page. Footnotes, except on first page indicating the corresponding author (8 font) should not be included. The entire manuscript should be prepared in Times New Roman, 11 font (except reference list, which should be in 10 font).

Spacing

Leave one space between the title of the paper and the name(s) of the author(s), and between the headings and the text. No space should be left between the paragraphs in the text. Leave 0.6-cm space between the two columns.

Electronic submission

Manuscript should be accompanied by a diskette indicating the name and version of the word processing programme used (use only MS Word 6/7 or compatible).

Referees

When submitting the manuscript authors may suggest up to three referees, preferably from other than their own countries, providing full name and address with email. However, the final choice of referees will remain entirely with the Editor.

Page charges and reprints

There will be no page charges. Reprints can be ordered up on acceptance of the paper. Manuscripts and all correspondence should be sent to the Editor, Prof. Dr. Carlos R. Soccol - Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology (address below).
