Instructions to Authors
***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***
The emphasis of Blood Pressure is on rapid refereeing and publication of scientific papers of excellence in the field of blood pressure research.
Types of Manuscripts In-depth Review articles will be published in each issue. Unless invited, authors are requested to discuss the topic of the proposed review with the Editors before submission.
Personal views by outstanding scientists on various aspects of blood pressure research will appear at regular intervals to give perspectives and hypotheses relating to blood pressure regulation and pathophysiology.
Original articles will appear either as full-length reports of original research or as Short communications reporting preliminary data from original work. At the Editor's discretion, papers will appear either under sections Basic Science or Clinical Science.
Case reports, reporting new and important clinical observations or experience of a novel treatment, will be considered for publication.
Letters to the editor are encouraged and may either provide criticism of papers previously published in Blood Pressure or comment on important aspects of blood pressure research or therapeutics.
Preparing for Submission
Submitted manuscripts should be arranged according to the rules stated in "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" Ann Intern Med 1997; 126: 36-47, or JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34. The full document is available at www.icmje.org
When submitting a paper, the author should always make a full statement to the editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the same or very similar work.
Conflict of interest and funding: Authors are responsible for recognising and disclosing financial and other conflicts of interest that might bias their work. They should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections to the work.
Statistic validity: If statistical data are provided the authors are requested to submit an official statement issued by a certified statistician (with a proper affiliation) regarding the validity of methods used.
Ethics and consent: When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. Papers including animal experiments or clinical trials must be accompanied by an approval by the local ethics committee. Please give date of issue and registration number. Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that the patient be shown the manuscript to be published.
Submission
Electronic Manuscripts The editors encourage submissions on diskette to facilitate rapid accessibility of your work to the readers. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. Cost of changes to the electronic manuscript may be charged to the author(s). The diskette should be labeled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please use this simple guideline for preparing your electronic manuscript:
- Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.
- Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.
- Enter only one space after the full-stop at the end of a sentence.
- When emphasising words please use the italic feature of your word processor software.
- Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.
- Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.
- Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).
- The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when identifying paragraphs or separating columns in tables.
Please observe that Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however, styled Microsoft Word files are preferred.
Please keep illustrations as separate files, e.g. EPS- or TIFF, JPEG etc. However, Taylor & Francis can handle various application formats. Correctly sized composite PDF's supported by hard copy. The colour must be CMYK, not RGB; all fonts must be embedded, and the resolution of images should be of a quality suitable for printing; i.e. files downloaded from web pages are not suitable, they will look acceptable on screen but not when printed. Do not use colour files if black and white only output is required.
Manuscript on paper Submit one original copy along with three photocopies of the entire paper, including figures.
Manuscript layout: All manuscripts must be typewritten double-spaced on good quality paper with margins of at least 2.5 cm. Only the original manuscript will be returned to authors. Authors are advised to keep one copy of the complete manuscript on file. Blood Pressure will not assume responsibility for manuscripts lost or damaged. To save time, manuscripts may be submitted by e-mail and then sent as a complete manuscript in quadruplicate by courier mail.
Each submission should be accompanied by a covering letter listing the complete name, address, and telephone and telefax numbers of the corresponding author. The letter should include or be accompanied by a statement, signed by all authors or the principal author on behalf of the others, indicating that the material has not been previously published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that all authors approve of the material submitted for publication. In the covering letter, authors are expected to disclose any commercial affiliation or other arrangements that could be considered to pose a conflict of interest regarding the submitted article. Such disclosures will remain confidential.
Organise the paper: 1) Title page, 2) Abstract, 3) Introduction, 4) Materials and Methods, 5) Results, 6) Discussion, 7) Acknowledgements, 8) References, 9) Tables, and 10) Figures.
Abbreviations and symbols must be standards and SI units should be used throughout, with the exception of measurement of blood pressure that should be expressed in mmHg. The concise Oxford English Dictionary should be used as a reference for spelling and hyphenation.
Title Page: The title page should give the title of the paper in no more than 100 characters, and should also include a running head not exceeding 45 letter spaces. List all authors and indicate the institutional affiliation of each author. Give the name, address, telephone and telefax numbers, and- if possible- e- mail address of the corresponding author.
Abstract Page: The abstract should include a short summary of the research (aims, major findings and principal conclusion) in no more than 200 words. The abstract should also include up to 6 key words, using terms from the Medical Subject Headings of Index Medicus wherever possible.
Text: The introduction should give a brief background of the aims of the investigation; extensive reviews of previously published work are discouraged. The Methods section should give sufficient detail to enable other investigators to repeat the work. Describe new methods in detail. The Results section should be concise and focus on findings relevant to the aim of the study. Avoid presenting data in more than one form. The Discussion section should focus on a critical assessment of the results of the study in view of previously reported research.
Acknowledgements: State funding and sources of support in the form of grants, equipment or drugs on a separate acknowledgements page. Indicate scientific or technical contributions that require acknowledgement, but do not justify authorship.
References: The Vancouver system must be applied. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they first appear in the paper in square brackets. Citations such as "unpublished observations" or "personal communications" should not appear in the references but be referred to in the text.
Abbreviations of journal titles; please consult the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, published annually as a list in the January issue of Index Medicus, also accessible at www.nlm.nih.gov
For journal article in electronic format use the following style: Morse SS. Factors in the emergence of infectious diseases. Emerg Infect Dis [serial online] 1995 Jan-Mar [cited 1996 Jun 5]; 1(1): [24 screens]. Available from: URL: http://www.cdc.gov\ncidod\EID\eid.htm
Tables Each table should be typed in double spacing on separate sheets of paper and be numbered in Roman numerals in the order of appearance in the text.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be submitted as glossy prints of line diagrams and graphs. Figures must be professionally prepared, and authors should ensure that symbols and lettering be large enough to be legible after reduction. Computer-generated illustrations may be accepted if produced on high quality printers.
