About the journal
|
Biomedical Chromatography is devoted to the publication of original papers on the applications of chromatography and allied techniques in the biological and medical sciences. Research papers and review articles cover the methods and techniques relevant to the separation, identification and determination of substances in biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, cell biology, clinical chemistry, pharmacology and related disciplines. These include the analysis of body fluids, cells and tissues, purification of biologically important compounds, pharmaco-kinetics and sequencing methods using HPLC, GC, HPLC-MS, TLC, paper chromatography, affinity chromatography, gel filtration, electrophoresis and related techniques.
This journal, as well as reporting current research, also serves our community as a major resource for information on practical and instrumental methodology.

Instructions to Authors
Instructions to Authors
Initial manuscript submission. Submit three copies of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to either the Editor-in-Chief or one of the Regional Editors.
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC or Mac formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We are able to use most word-processing packages, but prefer Word or WordPerfect.
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in eps, ps, pdf or tif format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 30 mm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, a short title of up to 70 characters, and the names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs. Authors should mark their papers with one of the following headings: Review, Original Research, Book Review, Short Communication or Rapid Communication.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
Original Research papers require the following sections:
Abstract. The abstract must be a concise (up to 200 words) summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and should be understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
Introduction. A concise account is required about the background to the subject, its importance and its relationship to earlier works, with references.
Experimental. This should be presented as a clear and detailed description of experimental procedures and analytical conditions to enable readers to carry out similar work. The detail and the presentation are to be based on the ISO (International Standards Organization) recommendations No. R73. Supply sample preparation procedures, name, model and configuration details of equipment used, and data handling methods.
Results. The original and important findings should be stated. Linear response, slope, intercept and standard error should be given in the text.
Nomenclature, units and symbols. Authors should conform to the Chemical Abstracts nomenclature for chemical names and structures. Proper or proprietary names should be used with caution. Many biomedical compounds are now referred to by acronyms and other short forms: common examples like ADP and EDTA are acceptable, but all others must be defined when first mentioned. Abbreviations are not acceptable in the title or abstract.
Acknowledgements. These must be brief and placed at the end of the paper.
Short Communications must be complete, self-contained papers, and not preliminary reports. They should not exceed two printed pages in the journal. As a rough guide, two printed pages will consist of about 800 words of main text, with an abstract, one small figure to fit a single column (width 84 mm), one small table and a short reference list.
Reviews will usually be written at the invitation of the Editors. Unsolicited reviews will be welcome but authors wishing to submit a review are requested to consult the Editors prior to commencement.
Correspondence should be a constructive comment on published work or used for putting forward new ideas and is published at the discretion of the Editors.
Rapid Communications. Experimental findings that merit very rapid publication can be submitted to the journal as Rapid Communications. The paper must be sent to the Editor-in-Chief and an accompanying letter must state clearly why the paper should be considered for rapid publication. Rapid Communications must be written in clear unambiguous English and authors must check their complete manuscript very carefully prior to submission because there will be no opportunity to revise the paper. Proofs will be sent to authors but these must be returned, correcting printing errors only, within 48 hours or the author will be assumed to have made no corrections. The corresponding author must include full contact details including telephone, fax and e-mail (or these details for an alternative contact should the corresponding author be unreachable). In order to maintain rapid publication a Rapid Communication must be no more than two printed pages in length, including figures, tables and references. This means that the submitted paper should be less than 800 words of text with a maximum combination of two figures and/or tables, and a maximum of 20 references. No colour illustrations will be accepted. All figures must be of the highest quality; photocopies will not be accepted. Each submission must include two hard copies of a double-line spaced manuscript (including high-quality artwork) and an electronic version of the whole paper saved on a PC disk, in a form compatible with MS Word 7 or lower. A signed Copyright Transfer Agreement must also be submitted. Authors will receive an immediate acknowledgement of receipt of their paper and, subsequently, notification of acceptance or rejection according to the referees?recommendations and the Editor-in-Chief抯 assessment. A paper accepted for publication as a Rapid Communication will then be published in the next available issue, ahead of normal papers.
News Items. News articles, press releases and conference diary items for inclusion in the News section should be sent by post, fax or e-mail to the News Editor, Professor Aboul-Enein at the address given on the inside front cover of the journal.
Book Reviews. The Editors will be pleased to receive books for possible review.
Reference style. References should be quoted in the text as name and year within parentheses and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. All references must be complete and accurate. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:
| Ascoli GA, Bertucci C and Salvadori P. Ligand binding to a human serum albumin stationary phase: use of same-drug competition to discriminate pharmacologically relevant interactions. Biomed. Chromatogr. 1998; 12: 248. |
| Beesley TE and Scott RPW. Chiral Chromatography, Separation Science Series. Wiley: Chichester, 1998; 49. |
Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author抯 name, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material are not acceptable. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable; lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Electronic versions of the artwork should be supplied at the intended size for printing; the maximum column widths are 84 mm (one column) or 176 mm (two columns). The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal may be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in one of the formats specified earlier, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience website.
Guidelines for chemical structures. Chemical structures should be prepared to either 84 mm (one column) or 176 mm (two columns) maximum widths. However, the one-column format should be used whenever possible as this allows greater flexibility in the layout of the paper. Electronic versions of the chemical structures should be supplied at the same size as the intended printed version (so no enlargement or reduction is required). Authors using different structural drawing programs should choose settings consistent with those above. Compound numbers should be bold, but not atom labels or captions.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author抯 work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Biomedical Chromatography. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimize the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
Authors in Japan please note. Wiley-Japan can provide authors in Japan with a list of recommended services to check and improve the English of their papers before submission. Please contact Masayo Kobayashi in the Wiley-Japan office by e-mail (editorial@wiley.co.jp) or fax (03 3556 9763) for more information, stating which journal you are submitting to.
