About the journal

Biology of the Cell publishes articles of original research on all aspects of cellular and molecular biology and cell physiology that make a notable contribution to understanding cell and tissue structure and function. Studies that use an integrated approach (from genomics to ultrastructure) to cell function, development and genetics as well as the characterisation of supra-macromolecular complexes and nanomachines are of particular interest. We also welcome manuscripts on cellular aspects of animal and plant development, neurobiology, immunology, plant biology, microbiology and protistology. Submission of theoretical or biophysical models of cell function and methodological contributions are encouraged.

Biology of the Cell also publishes, in addition to Reviews and Mini-reviews, a separate section, entitled Scientiae forum, that will include articles on the following topics: My Favourite Sites describing interesting Web sites on the topic of your choice; Models and Speculations on all aspects of cell structure and function; Primer Reviews aimed at opening-up specific topics to scientist working in unrelated fields of interest; Teaching biology addressing new ways of teaching biology and History of Biology and the Cell that will situate the present research in the life sciences within its historical context. Lastly, Biology of the Cell publishes Special Issues that give an in depth treatment to defined topics of cellular and molecular biology and cell physiology. Review or research articles that correspond to all or part of the presentations at appropriate scientific meetings can be the object of a special issue.

Lastly, Biology of the Cell publishes Special Issues that give an in depth treatment to defined topics of cellular and molecular biology and cell physiology. Review or research articles that correspond to all or part of the presentations at appropriate scientific meetings can be the object of a special issue. Suggestions, by potential guest editors, of topics for special issues should be sent to the Editorial Office or to one of the Associate Editors. After approval of the topic and contents by the Editorial Office special issues will be compiled by guest editors, usually the person(s) making the initial suggestion. Occasionally, the organisation of special issues will be handled by one of the editors of Biology of the Cell.

Submission and reviewing of manuscripts.
Manuscripts for research articles and reviews should be sent to the editorial office in Rennes, France. In general these should not exceed 12 printed pages (5 500 characters per page) including the figures. Longer articles will be published, at the discretion of the editorial board, if the research or review subject warrants extended space. Mini-reviews are designed to address a very specific subject and should not exceed 5 printed pages including the figures.

Manuscripts for the "Scientiae forum" (My Favourite Sites, Models and Speculations, Primer, Reviews, Teaching Biology and History of Biology and the Cell) should be sent, preferably, to the appropriate Associate Editor or to the editorial office.

An initial submission in electronic form will permit a faster return of referees comments and editorial decisions. It is encouraged to send manuscripts as a single "pdf" file (text and figures) or as two files (one text file in Rich Text Format and one file containing all the figures in jpeg, gif or Powerpoint formats; figure files should be not exceed 1.5 Mb). The total size of the submission should not exceed 2 Mb. To send the electronic files a CD-Rom should be prefered to a disk when ever possible. When sent to the editorial office these should be accompanied by one paper copy. Manuscripts can be also be sumbitted by E-mail. The names of the electronic files must have the following format: first author.pdf or first author_text.rtf and first author_figures.jpg (examples Dupont.pdf or Dupont_text.rtf and Dupont_figure.jpg). The word processor and illustrations program should also be indicated on the CD-ROM or disk. For research articles and reviews paper copies of manuscripts (one original and three copies) will also be accepted.

The results presented in manuscripts submitted for publication should not have been previously published or submitted for publication to another journal. Copies of closely related papers that have been submitted to other journals or that are in press should accompany the manuscript in order to facilitate reviewing.

The originality and quality of manuscripts are determined by two independent reviewers. Authors are invited to suggest the names of four possible referees from among the editors and are allowed to suggest the exclusion of four editors or other scientist on the grounds of a conflict of interests.

Offprints, page and figure charges.
50 offprints of each article are sent to the corresponding author free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by the author(s). Offprint requests after publication will be subject to an extra charge. No page charges are made for publication in Biology of the Cell. Colour reproductions will be reproduced free of charge, upon approval of the Editor-in-Chief.

Revision of manuscripts.
When manuscripts are returned to the authors for revision, the revised version should be returned to the editorial office within 3 months. Revised manuscripts returned after 6 months will automatically be considered as a new submission. All revised manuscripts must be accompanied by a point by point explanation of the way in which the reviewer's comments have been accounted for.

Cover pictures.
Authors are encouraged to submit to the editorial office startling cover photographs, computer graphics or drawings that illustrate their accepted manuscript. Proposals for cover pictures should either be sent at the same time as the final version of the manuscript or be sent upon notification of acceptance of a manuscript. Cover pictures must be submitted as both an electronic file (jpeg, gif or Powerpoint formats) and one printed copy. The electronic file of the proposed cover picture must be on a different CD ROM or disk than the manuscript files.

Speed of publication.
Research articles, Reviews and Scientiae forum articles are published online at http://www.sciencedirect.com within three weeks of receiving the final accepted paper and electronic versions in the editorial office. The printed article will be published within four months following the acceptance of the manuscript.

General arrangement of all manuscripts.
All manuscripts should be in English, typewritten on A4 or American quarto paper. All sections should be double-spaced (space between lines of type not less than 6 mm). A margin of 2.5 cm (1 inch) should be left on the sides, top and bottom of each page. All pages should be numbered. The final versions must be accompanied by an electronic file (see `Electronic manuscripts' below).

Preparation of text.
Research articles should be divided into the following sections:
Title page
Abstract
Introduction
Results
Discussion
Materials and Methods
Acknowledgements
References
Legends to figures
Tables

Title page. The tile page should include the title, the names, affiliations and addresses of the authors, the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be addressed (indicated by an asterisk), and a list of up to five key words. Do not duplicate words from the title as keywords. The telephone / fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author must be included.

Abstract. The abstract should clearly state the problem addressed, the major results, the experimental approach and the major conclusions. It should not exceed 250 words.

Introduction. The Introduction should summarise the background of the research presented. Any theoretical background required to understand the experimental design should also be presented. The pertinent findings can be briefly stated.

Results and Discussion. If desired these two sections can be combined. The conclusions presented in the results and/or discussion sections must be rigorously supported by the experimental data given in the results section. However, imaginative proposition, in the discussion, as to further possible interpretations of the data are the prerogative of the authors.

Materials and Methods. The description of the experimental methods should be concise but adequate, so that other research scientists are able to reproduce the work. Methods that have been previously published should not be described in detail but cited as references. Only modifications to these methods should be described in detail.

References. References in text:
- one author: Doe (1996), or (Doe, 1996),
- two authors: Doe and Jones (1996), or (Doe and Jones, 1996),
- more than two authors: Doe et al. (1996), or (Doe et al., 1996),
References cited together should be separated by a semi-colon (Hartwell and Weinert, 1989; Olins et al., 1996). Lowercase letters should be used to differentiate similar references: (Doe, 1996a) and (Doe, 1996b).

Reference list:
Type references double-spaced beginning on a sheet separate from the text. References must be in alphabetical order by surname and year. Abbreviations of journal titles should conform to those adopted by Chemical Abstracts - Bibliographic Guide for Editors and Authors, 1974. Spell out the names of unlisted journals.

The format and punctuation of the listed references should be as follows:
- Journal Articles:
Hartwell, L.H., Weinert, T.A., 1989. Checkpoints: controls that ensure the order of cell cycle events. Science 246, 629-634.
- Books:
Bucher, T., Neupert, W., Sebald, W., Werner, S., 1976. Genetics and Biogenesis of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria. North-Holland Publishing Co, Amsterdam.
- Articles in Books:
Satir, P., 1979. Basis of flagellar motility in spermatozoa: current status. In: Fawcett, D.W., Bedford, J.M. (Eds.), The Spermatozoan. Urban and Schwarzenberg, Munich, pp. 81-90.

Citation of abstracts in the reference list is not permitted. Citations such as 'submitted for publication', 'in preparation', and 'personal communication' should be included parenthetically in the text and must not appear in the reference section. For personal communications include cited author's institutional affiliation; his/her written permission to use material cited should accompany the manuscript. Unpublished work may not be cited in Materials and Methods.

Tables. Tables should also be typed with double line spacing. They should have a heading, and be numbered with Roman numerals (e.g. Table 1) consecutively throughout the text.

Legends. Each figure must be accompanied by a descriptive legend that allows the reader to understand the figure without reference to the text.

Figures. Figures can be submitted either in electronic form (maximum 300 dpi) or if a hard copy is submitted figures should be in triplicate glossy prints, or produced with a high quality printer. They should be suitable for reproduction either across a single column (76 mm) or across a whole page (160 mm); the maximum height is 206 mm. The figures and the lettering should be in proportion and large enough to allow for reduction before printing. For micrographs the magnification should be indicated in the legend and on the micrograph (scales bar). All figures should be numbered with Roman numerals (e.g. Fig. 1) consecutively throughout the text. Colour reproductions will be reproduced free of charge, upon approval of the Editor-in-Chief.

Specific Instructions for articles to the Scientiae forum.
Manuscripts on these subjects should be submitted exclusively in electronic form by E-mail to the indicated Associate Editor or to the Editorial Office. These manuscripts should be submitted as one pdf file or alternatively as a text file in the Word Rich Text Format (rtf), the figure should be a jpeg, gif or PowerPoint file. The total size of the submission should not exceed 2 Mb. The names of the electronic files must have the following format: first author.pdf or first author_text.rtf and first author_figures.jpg (exemples Dupont.pdf or Dupont_text.rtf and Dupont_figure.jpg). All manuscripts should contain a title page (see above) and an abstract of no more than 250 words. References should follow the format given above. Questions on these articles should be addressed to the indicated Associate Editors.

My Favourite sites - Associate Editors: Christain SARDET sardet@obs-vlfr.fr and Kevin ELICERI eliceiri@wisc.edu.
These should be short articles one to two printed pages (5500 characters per page) including figures, that convey your excitement for the sites and multimedia documents you like on the topics of your choice (research, education, museology, technology ...). Navigating the world wide web can be difficult and this new topic should be considered a travel guide pointing to the most creative, the most informative as well as hidden gems. Provide good directions, a catchy and informative title and an illustrative image (home page/ photo/cartoon...) extracted from one of your favourite site (with the authors permission). Presentations and critiques of multimedia documents (CD Roms, DVD, BioClips ...) are also welcome. Although the format of these articles is free, they should be structured to facilitate reading.

Models and Speculations - Associate Editor: Thierry GALLI bcmodels@free.fr.
These should be short reviews with a strong expression of your personal insight. The text should be less than 3 printed pages (5500 characters per page) and include one illustration. These reviews should present original interpretations of the data published in the literature and open new questions in the field. The authors should have made significant contributions in the field of the review.

Primer Reviews - Associate Editors: Nathalie LAMARCHE VANE nathalie.lamarche@mcgill.ca and Michael WHITAKER michael.whitaker@ncl.ac.uk.
Primers will be concise review articles that are readily understandable to novices to the subject in question. They should be aimed at graduate students and should be valuable to motivated final year undergraduates but will also be relevant to practising scientists who require concise primary information in a field that is distant from their main expertise. The format of the primers will vary in length and in the ratio of text to illustration, depending on the subject; they would not normally exceed 3 printed pages in length (5500 characters per page), excluding figures. Primers will have short bibliographies pointing readers to reviews and key papers in the field. Unsollicited reviews should be sent, by E-mail only, to nathalie.lamarche@mcgill.ca or michael.whitaker@ncl.ac.uk or eventually to the Editorial Office. Preliminary enquiries as to the suitability of a topic or treatment may also be made by the same routes.

Teaching Biology - Associate Editor: Germain TRUGNAN trugnan@ccr.jussieu.fr
As cell biology rapidly evolves and expands, the ways of teaching cell biology have to change in order to help students and young scientists handle new concepts and methodologies that become more and more complex. We invite you to submit contributions dealing with all the aspects of teaching biology. This will include (i) new information or initiative developed in Universities or Institutes world-wide to promote interactive biology teaching; (ii) description of web sites, multimedia teaching tools or books; (iii) comparative evaluation of teaching approaches; (iv) reviews on new methodologies from a practical point of view. The articles will not be restricted to cell biology but open to all the fields contributing to an integrative view of biological systems such as biochemistry, biophysics, developmental biology, integrative physiology, patho-physiology, ... Contributions from teachers, scientists and students will be welcomed. In general contributions should not exceed 4 printed pages (5500 characters per page) including the figures; short articles and letters will also be published. Manuscripts exceeding 4 pages will be published at the discretion of the Associate Editor.

History of Biology and the Cell - Associate Editor: Mark TERASAKI terasaki@neuron.uchc.edu
History of Biology and the Cell will take the format of essays that allow the reader to place current research in all aspects of cell biology in the context of past work. Articles on the evolution of concepts and ideas over the years are also welcomed. In general contributions should not exceed 8 printed pages (5500 characters per page) including the figures. Longer manuscripts will be published at the discretion of the Associate Editor.

Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, electronic versions should be sent as a single "pdf" file (text and figure) or eventually as two files (one text file in Rich Text Format and one file containing all the figures in jpeg, gif or Powerpoint formats; this figure file should not exceed 1.5 Mb). The total size of the submission should not exceed 2 Mb. Except for e-mail submissions, a CD-ROM should be preferred to a disk when ever possible. The names of the electronic files must have the following format: first author.pdf or first author_text.rtf and first author_figures.jpg (exemples Dupont.pdf or Dupont_text.rtf and Dupont_figure.jpg). The word processor and illustrations program should also be indicated.

For the processing of accepted papers, electronic versions are required. After final acceptance, your CD-ROM (preferred) or a disk and two exactly matching printed copies (as a printout) should be submitted together to the editorial office. It is important that the file on the disk and the printouts are identical. Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Do not allow your wordprocessor to introduce word splits and do not use a `justified' layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. It is important that the file saved is in the native format of the wordprocessor program used. Label the electronic support (disk or CD) with the name of the computer and word processing package used, your name, and the name of the file. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.

Proofs are automatically sent to the corresponding author. Only printer's errors may be corrected, no changes in or additions to the edited manuscript will be accepted. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are sent back to us in one communication. Subsequent corrections will not be possible, so please ensure your first sending is complete.
