About the journal

Aims and scope: Biological Agriculture & Horticulture aims to act as the central focus for a wide range of studies into alternative systems of husbandry, and particularly the biological approach to food production. The journal will publish work of a sound scientific or economic nature related to the many factors contributing to the development and application of biological husbandry in agriculture, horticulture, forestry etc. in both temperate and tropical conditions. It also reports comparative studies between conventional, low-input and biological systems of husbandry. The areas covered include soil fertility and management; biological control methods; energy utilisation studies; agricultural systems and environmental management; the development of appropriate agricultural technologies. Language: The official language of the journal is English.

Instructions to Authors

Submission: Papers should be sent in duplicate to the editor. Authors should aim to be concise and those wishing to submit longer papers, such as reviews, should consult the editor beforehand. Although the main content of the journal will be original research reports, reviews and reports of trials and experience, short papers are also welcome. Submission of a paper for publication implies that it is an original work which is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and that on acceptance the copyright is transferred to the publisher. Unsolicted book reviews are not normally accepted.

Manuscript preparation: Manuscripts should be typed with double spacing on one side of good quality A4 size paper, with wide margins. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Double spacing should also be used for abstracts, references and footnotes.

1. Titles and subtitles should be typed on a separate line, without indentation, in lower case; they should not be underlined. Long titles and superfluous capitals should be avoided.

2. Any instructions to the copy editor or printer should be encircled; any symbol which might have more than one interpretation should be explained in the margin and that explaination encircled.

3. The metric system, with SI units, should be used throughout the manuscript. The preferred style is to use the minus index (e.g. g h-1) instead of a slash or "per". Dates should be given as, e.g. 16 May 1996.

4. The following order should normally be used:

First page: Title. Author(s) name(s). Affiliation(s); present address(es) of author(s). Short, running title. The full address of the person to whom proofs are to be sent should be given (and clearly indicated) at the bottom of the first page.

Second page: Abstract not exceeding 250 words.

Third page, etc.: Introduction. Materials and methods. Results. Discussion and conclusions. Acknowledgements (including information concerning research grants). References. Tables. Figure captions.

Illustrations (Figures): Figures submitted must be of high quality for direct reproduction. Line drawings should be in India ink. Clear printouts from laser printers or equivalent devices are acceptable. Figures should be drawn, if possible, at twice their final intended printing size; all symbols and lettering should be included, in a style consistent with the text. They should be unmounted, not folded, and numbered in Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. The identification should be given lightly on the reverse of each illustration, by its number and the name(s) of the author(s). The top should be indicated whenever doubt might arise. Illustrations in colour can only be published if the cost is paid by the author(s). Each figure should have a caption; all captions should be typed on a separate sheet included with the manuscript. Photographic illustrations must be glossy original prints mounted on light card with any necessary markings already added. They should be lightly identified on the reverse. (Figures should be planned so that they reduce to a width of not more than 112 mm; the preferred width for line drawings is 16 to 20 cm for reduction to half size.) The publisher reserves the right to reject unsuitable prints. Redrawing or retouching of illustrations can be undertaken by the publisher at the expense of the author(s). The correct position of each figure should be indicated in the margin of the text as figure 1, etc. Photocopies of line drawings should accompany the duplicate manuscript but both copies should be accompanied by original prints of photographs.

References: Publications cited in the text should be provided in a separate list of references; consistency of names and dates should be carefully checked. In the text, authors and year of publication should be given in parentheses; et al. should be used where there are more than two authors; initials should not be used; "Salter & Jackson (1987) demonstrated that ..... Previous work (Peacock et al., 1983; Goldman, 1991) has shown that...". In the list of references, the arrangement should be alphabetical; all co-authors should be cited. More than one paper by a single author or by multiple authors should be arranged by publication date; publication in the same year should be denoted by 'a', 'b', etc. In the case of non-English publications, the original title should be used. Journal titles should be given in full, e.g.:

For books:

Edwards, C.A. & Lofty, J.B. (1977). Biology of Earthworms, 2nd. edn. Chapman & Hall; London.

Riordan, J.F. & Vallee, B.L. (1976). Structure and function of zinc metallo-enzymes. In Trace Elements in Human Health and Disease (A.S. Prasad & D. Oberleas, eds.), Vol. 1, pp. 227-256. Academic Press; New York.

For journals:

Evans, L.T. (1980). The natural history of crop yield. American Scientist, 68, 388-397.

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively, according to their sequence in the text, with Arabic numerals. The text should include reference to all tables. All tables should be typed on a separate page and not included in the text. Each table should have a brief main title; column headings should also be brief but self explanatory; space between columns should be used rather than vertical lines. Over large tables should be avoided; drawn tables should not be folded. Any essential explanations should be given at the bottom of the table.

Footnotes: Footnotes should only be used if it is impossible to incorporate the information in the main body of the text; if used, they should be identified by superscript numerals and kept short.

Nomenclature: All biotica should be identified by their scientific binomial names where the English terms are first used. The rules laid down by the accepted codes of botanical and zoological nomenclature should be followed.

Proofs: Page proofs will be sent to authors for correction and should be returned within the requested time (by airmail if necessary). Author's alterations in excess of 10% of the composition cost will be charged. The Editor reserves the right to publish a paper without the author's own corrections in cases of undue delay in returning proofs.

Copyright: It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain any permission necessary to reproduce or quopte from ppublished work(s); suitable acknowledgement should always be made. Unpublished manuscripts or letters are also protected.

Reprints: 25 prints of each paper are supplied free of charge; additional quantities may be ordered at the time the proofs are checked, on the order form provided.

All manuscripts and other editorial correspondence should be sent to:
