Submitted manuscripts are reviewed by the section editor and by one or two referee(s) who may, or may not, be members of the editorial board. Manuscripts not prepared according to the following instructions may be returned for correction prior to review.
Manuscript preparation
Manuscripts must be double-spaced throughout, typed on one side only, with margins at least 2.5 cm in width. Authors are strongly encouraged to write in English, but papers in French, Dutch and German may also be accepted. The final version must be sent also in electronic format, preferably as a Word document (RTF or WordPerfect formats may also be used) stored on a clearly labelled 3? disk.
Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal, especially for the particulars of tables or references presentation; in case of doubt it is better to type the manuscript entirely in ordinary type, without italics, capitals or underlining. In any case, do not do the following: split the text into columns, hyphenate, insert figures or tables in the body of the text.
Manuscripts must present the following parts, each starting on a new page : 1) title page, 2) abstract(s) and key words, 3) text, followed by acknowledgements and references, 4) tables, 5) figure captions 6) figures. Letters should not include abstract(s) and key-words. All pages, except those with figures, must be numbered. Title page
The title page should include :
1. A title indicating clearly and briefly the object of the paper. Taxa, if any, should be mentioned by their scientific name without authority.
2. Author(s) name(s), preceeded by the surname or the initials of the surname(s).
3. Author(s) addresses and other useful information.
4. The name and e-mail address of the corresponding author.
5. A running title (max. 50 characters).
Abstract(s) and key words
An abstract in the language of the paper is requested. If the paper is written in a language other than English, an English translation of both the title and the abstract is also requested. Please provide a list of up to 6 key words. Text
Authors are responsible for consistency of spelling and correctness of language. They should use I.U.S symbols and abbreviations consistent with international recommendations. Authorship of scientific names must be cited when mentioning for the first time the scientific name of a taxon of specific or infraspecific rank. Fractions should be typed as "7/25" or "(a + b)/c". The places where illustrations or tables are wanted should be indicated in pencil in the margin. Footnotes should be avoided; if they are absolutely necessary, they must be numbered in one continuous series. References
Author(s) are responsible for the completeness and the correctness of the bibliographic references, especially for listing all works cited in the text at the end of the paper. In the text, references should appear as follows : DUPONT (1978: 487) or (DUPONT & DUPOND 1978), or when there are more than two authors (DUPONT et al. 1978). Reference to work in press is allowed only when proof of acceptance can be produced. The full reference list must be sorted in alphabetical order, with references of the same author(s) being listed in chronological order. References must appear as follows :
SCHUMACKER R., 2001. - The hepatic flora of the Azores. Belg. J. Bot. 134: 51-63.
SOKAL R. R. & ROHLF F. J., 1995. - Biometry, 3rd edn.: xix + 887 p. W. H. Freeman & Co, New York.
BARRETT S. C. H. & PANNELL J. R., 1999. - Metapopulation dynamics and mating-system evolution in plants. In: HOLLINGSWORTH P. M., BATEMAN R. M. & GORNALL R. J. (eds.), Molecular systematics and plant evolution, pp. 74-100. Taylor & Francis, London.
Tables and figures
Tables must have titles and illustrations must have captions including enough information to be understood without undue recourse to the text. They must be numbered with Arabic numerals and their position should be clearly indicated in the margin of the body of the text. Line drawings and diagrams should be made with Indian ink on good quality white paper or on strong tracing paper. Computer generated figures must be laser printed. Photographs (halftones) should be prepared on glossy paper with the best possible contrast.
The original illustrations and two sets of clear copies are required. Black and white line drawings and tables included in the free pages granted to authors are published at the Society's expenses; halftone photographs, colour illustrations, inset plates and folders are at the author(s)' expenses.
Proofs
The proofs should be carefully corrected and returned to the editor-in-chief within a week. Unjustified delay could involve the publication of the paper without the author's corrections or to be postponed to a next issue of the journal.
Page charges & offprints
Members of the Royal Botanical Society of Belgium are entitled to 12 free printed pages per year. Additional pages will be charged to the authors at the full price.
