About the journal
Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research
This international journal is sponsored by the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology, and publishes results from original research.
Subject areas include vine and wine science as well as product technology relating to table grapes and dried vine fruits, grape juice, wine and distilled spirits. Vine science relates to any aspect of grapevine biology including physiology and pathology. Wine science covers molecular, microbiological, biochemical and production aspects of wine making. Grape product technology relates to crop production issues and transformation of grapes into a marketable product.
We consider papers that extend our knowledge of grapevine biology and improve our understanding of production issues. Articles include original reports, critical reviews and technical notes. All papers are assessed for scientific merit and are usually peer-reviewed by at least two referees.
Our goal is to facilitate prompt publication of high quality vine and wine science, and make this new knowledge available worldwide via print and electronic media.
Articles published in the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research are indexed by CAB (Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences Information), Chemical Abstracts, IFIS (International Food Information Service), Vitis-VEA and by the Institute for Scientific Information in CURRENT CONTENTS (Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences).

Instructions to Authors
Guide to Authors This journal publishes results from original research that either extend our knowledge of grapevine biology, or improve our understanding of production issues relating to table grapes, dried vine fruits, grape juice and wine. Review articles, short research papers and technical notes presenting new information will also be accepted. A paper is considered for publication on the assumption that, as an original contribution, it was not published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission of multi-author papers is taken as indication that all authors agree to its publication. Any queries may be discussed with the editor before submission of the paper.
Submission of manuscripts Submit all manuscripts to:
Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research PO Box 197 Glen Osmond 5064 South Australia, Australia
Editor: Adj. Prof. Paul Kriedemann Phone: +61 2 6286 4496 Facsimile: +61 2 6125 4919 E-mail: editor.ajgwr@cyberone.com.au
Authors are urged to provide telephone, facsimile and e-mail contacts to facilitate communication during pre-press operations.
Manuscript preparation Three copies of the manuscript should be submitted on A4 white paper. The manuscript should be paginated, including the pages of tables, figures and legends, typed double-spaced, with margins of at least 40 mm on the left and 25 mm on the other three sides. Tables and photocopies of the figures should be placed at the end of the text, one per page, followed by pages with the legends of the figures. The original figures should be submitted camera-ready in duplicate, and marked on the back with the author's name, the figure number as per text, and the orientation marked unless obvious. Line diagrams should preferably be produced by computer, with all lettering in Helvetica font, and laser-printed for scanning. Photographs, with their lettering where appropriate, must be presented on glossy paper and unmounted.
Authors should submit papers as hard copy, accompanied by an electronic version on disk. IBM files in Wordperfect or Word are acceptable. We prefer Word files for Macintosh. All text should be left-aligned, unjustified, in uniform font including super- and subscripts. Bold and italics may be used. Line numbering is welcome if available. Each table should be supplied as a separate file, and each figure legend should also be supplied as a separate file (especially important with complex illustrations involving long captions). Please name each file and indicate software package.
In general, the journal follows the advice given in the Style Manual for Authors, Editors and Printers, Australian Government Publishing Service, 5th edition, AGPS Press, Canberra 1994, which should be consulted. For the design of the diagrams, Preparing for print by M. Sharkey and F. Spranger CSIRO Advisory Service, Melbourne is a helpful publication with additional references.
Title, authorship, abridged title, keywords The title of the paper should be concise, commence with the main subject of the publication and contain as many keywords as possible. The title should be typed in lower case except for the use of capitals for the first letter of the first word and for words which appear with capitals in the text. Additional keywords, if necessary, and an abridged title of at most 50 letters (to be used as running page-heading) should be noted below the listing of the authors.
The names of all authors should be in upper case, the initials of first names preceding the surnames. The names of authors affiliated with different institutions should be followed by superscript digits (1, 2 etc.). These superscript letters will refer to the authors' institutions of affiliation; these will be listed as a group below the authors' names, together with their full postal addresses. For multi-author papers the name of the author accepting correspondence concerning the paper should be marked similarly, and the facsimile number should be given.
Abstract The abstract should not exceed 250 words and should be of a form suitable for inclusion in abstracting journals.
Text The text of the paper must be in clear, concise and grammatically correct English. Considering the wide scope of the Journal, authors should use scientific jargon only where it is unavoidable; they should give a reference for those expressions which are not contained in scientific dictionaries. Abbreviations must be clearly identified and should be used sparingly.
The paper will be divided into the usual sections of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References. These headings will be in bold, with sub-headings in italics. All headings will be left-aligned without numbering. 'Results' and 'Discussion' may be joined in short papers: 'Conclusions' are often appropriately included in 'Discussion'.
Short research papers will be up to four pages. Communications and Notes will not be divided into sections and their length should not exceed two printed pages (ca. 1800 words).
A review article will be a critical appraisal of the subject and make an original contribution, instead of simply being a collection of literature citations. Prearrangement with the editor is advisable.
Footnotes Footnotes will be kept to a minimum and, if used, should be placed within horizontal rules immediately below the line to which they refer.
References Text references Single-author references will be referred to in the text as either Smith (1994) or (Smith 1994).
