About the journal
Australian Journal of Dairy Technology
The Australian Journal of Dairy Technology includes full technical and scientific papers on issues of importance to the industry's productive future and helps ensure that the results of research projects are made widely known. See Abstracts of the articles published in the AJDT.
There are three issues annually, April, July and October. The July issue is the Proceedings of the Dairy Science World Series Conference.
Instructions to Authors Guidetocontributors Research papers, review papers, technical articles, letters to the editor on technical subjects, book reviews and conference/seminar proceedings relevant to dairy manufacturing may be submitted to the Journal at any time. Manuscripts from countries other than Australia are encouraged, provided the topics are of relevance to the Australian dairy industry. The coverage of material should be generally confined to dairy science, technology and engineering in relation to dairy manufacturing, and to those factors in milk production which can influence the quality of milk for manufacturing. Research papers should contain original research results and adequate discussion of their interpretation and significance. Where appropriate, rigorous statistical analysis of experimental data must be evident. Technical articles contain information of a technical nature, but do not generally report original research. Contributions should not be offered elsewhere for prior or simultaneous publication and, if accepted for publication, should not be published elsewhere without the consent of the Editor. Research papers, review papers and most technical articles will be submitted to at least two referees for review. Forms of papers Head each paper with its title, full names of the authors, the name and address of the establishment where the work was done, and the institute affiliation of each author. A brief, self-contained summary should precede all research papers and technical articles containing more than 1,500 words. Papers should be written as concisely as possible. Print papers on one side of the paper only, double spaced and with at least a 3 cm margin. Spelling should be in accordance with the Concise Oxford Dictionary, e.g. preference for s rather than z where there is an option. Data should be in metric units according to the SI (Systeme Internationale d’Unites) standard. Symbols and abbreviations used are those of British Standard 1991; Part 1 1976, Letter Symbols, Signs and Abbreviations. Authors should consult a current issue of the Journal for detail of format, typographical conventions and editorial style. Papers should be initially submitted in hard copy accompanied by an electronic version on disk. The text of the paper should be contained in a standard Word-compatible file. If possible, please activate the line numbering function. Tables and graphics/figures should be in a separate file. The programs (Word, WordPerfect, Excel, etc) used to create the file should be noted. Tables Tables should be given Arabic numbers and cited in the text. Their headings should describe their content and be comprehensible without reference to the text. Present explanatory material as footnotes using superscript numbers. Avoid vertical lines. To contain printing costs, tables should be as short as possible and the number kept to a minimum. Illustrations An original version of each figure must accompany the original paper. They should be created about twice the size of the final figure (i.e. about 18 cm and 36 cm wide for single and double column width respectively) in black on good quality paper. Lines and lettering should be large enough and heavy enough (bold) for clear reproduction at the reduced size. Computer-generated figures and illustrations printed in black using a good quality laser printer are acceptable. Figures and illustrations may be submitted on disk as a computer graphics file, but must be accompanied by a reproduction-quality printout. The type of graphic file, the software package used to generate it should be noted. Do not use colours within the graphic for lines or symbols. Photographs should be submitted as black and white positives (glossy prints) and have adequate contrast. A resolution of 300dpi is required for photographs. Captions for figures should be presented at the end of the manuscript as well as on the figures themselves. References References should be noted in the text by the author’s surname(s), followed by the year of publication in brackets, e.g. Johns and Smith (1939). Where there are three or more authors, give only the first surname, followed by et al. (e.g. Brown et al. 1939). All references are to be subsequently listed alphabetically at the end of the paper. This listing should give the names and initials of all the authors followed by the year of publication, full title of article, title of periodical, volume and page numbers, thus: Cerbulis, J. and Farrell, H.M. (1977), Xanthine oxidase activity in dairy products. J. Dairy Sci. 60, 170-176. If the original paper has not been consulted, the source of the abstract should be given. References to books should give the author or editor, date of publication, title, publisher’s name and city, and page numbers of section cited: Jones, D. and Collins, M.D. (1986), Irregular, non-sporing gram-positive rods. In Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, Vol. 2. (Eds P.H.A. Sneath, N.S. Mair, M.E. Sharpe and J.G. Holt). Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, pp 1261-1325. It is the duty of the author(s) to check all references. Safety warnings Authors are asked to draw attention to any hazards which may not be readily apparent in the use of experimental techniques or chemical reagents specified in their papers. Page charges A$66 (incl. GST) per Journal page if the first author is a member of the DIAA. Otherwise, A$88 (incl. GST) per page if the first author is not a DIAA member. A extra levy of A$33 (incl. GST) per page applies if the final version is not submitted on disc. There are no page charges for technical articles and reviews invited by one of the Scientific Editors, nor for Letters to the Editor and book reviews.
