Instructions to Authors
Auris Nasus Larynx provides the opportunity for rapid, carefully reviewed publications concerning the fundamental and clinical aspects of otorhinolaryngology and related fields. This includes otology, neurotology, bronchoesophagology, laryngology, rhinology, allergology, head and neck medicine and oncologic surgery, maxillofacial and plastic surgery, audiology, speech science and communication disorders.

Types of papers

Original papers, short communications and original case reports can be submitted. Reviews on recent developments are invited regularly and Letters to the Editor commenting on papers or any aspect of the Journal are welcomed.

Original papers should report the results of original research, and the material should not have been previously published elsewhere, except in preliminary form. Manuscripts should be as concise and to the point as possible. Please condense your manuscript as much as possible. It is recommended that papers should in general not exceed 10 printed pages.

Short communications are brief and contain significant new results. Recommended size is a maximum of 4 printed pages (6-8 double-spaced typed pages) including figures and tables. Short Communications should be concisely but adequately referenced.

Case reports are brief reports of unusual or instructive cases. They should be well documented and illustrated. Please keep within 6 printed pages as a maximum.

Submission of manuscripts: copyright

Submission of an article is understood to imply that the article is original and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Upon acceptance of the article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Multiple authorship

On submission, all authors of the paper listed should sign a letter in which they state that they all have participated sufficiently in the conception and design of the work, in the analysis of the data and in writing the manuscript to take public responsibility for it.

Ethical standards

Human subject experiments or the usage of human materials (such as tissues) should be in accordance with the ethical standards of a responsible committee at the institute where the research is carried out and with the Helsinki Declaration. Animal studies should be carried out within recognised guidelines for the care of laboratory animals.

Electronic manuscripts

Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs. For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, paper versions are sufficient. For the processing of accepted papers, your diskette plus three final and exactly matching printed versions should be submitted together. Please use new correctly formatted, HD or DD, 5 1/4 or 3 1/2 inch diskettes. Save your file in the native format of the word processing program used. Label the diskette with your name, the name of the file, the title of the journal, the type of computer (IBM, NEC, Macintosh) and name and version number of the word processing program.

Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Ensure that the letter "l" and digit "1" (also letter "O" and digit "0") have been used properly, and structure your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your word processor (e.g. Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g. gralpha, @, #, etc., for the Greek letter alpha). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text.

Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your word processor to introduce word splits at the end of lines and do not use justified right margins.

Preparation of manuscripts

1. Manuscripts should be written in English. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to have their manuscripts checked by an English-speaking colleague prior to submission. (Authors in Japan, please note: Upon request, Elsevier Science K.K. will provide authors with a list of people who can check and improve the English of their paper before submission. Please contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Science K.K., Editorial Service, 9-15 Higashi-Azabu, 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044. Tel: (+81)3-5561-5032, Fax: (+81)3-5561-5045; E-mail: info@elsevier.co.jp2. Submit the original and three copies of your manuscript. Enclose the original illustrations and three sets of photocopies (four prints of any photographs).

3. Manuscripts should be typewritten, typed on one side of the paper, with wide margins and double spacing throughout. Underline words that should be in italics, and do not underline any other words. Avoid excessive usage of italics to emphasize part of the text.

4. Manuscripts should in general be divided in the following components: title, authors' names and affiliations, abstract, keywords, text (introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgments), references, tables, figure legends, figures. Number pages consecutively.

5. The title page should include (1) a concise but informative title, (2) authors' names, affiliations and full postal addresses, (3) name, address, telephone and fax number and e-mail address of the author handling correspondence and proofs.

6. The Abstract (of Original Papers) should be prepared on a separate page, not exceeding 400 words. It should be informative, not merely descriptive, and it must be composed by four divisions: (1) Objective should concisely describe the hypothesis, problem and/or purpose of the study; (2) Methods should include basic procedures and materials, and observational and analytical methods; (3) Results should describe major findings and statistical significance, if possible by all means; and (4) Conclusion must be very clearly and concisely state the principal conclusion(s) of the study. Reviews and Case reports need not follow these instructions. Abstracts for Case reports should not exceed 200 words.

7. 3-6 keywords (indexing terms) should be supplied.

Tables

Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. The text should include references to all tables. They should be on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript (not included in the text). They should each be headed by a concise title. Place explanatory matter in footnotes below the table. Column headings should be brief, but sufficiently explanatory. Standard abbreviations of units of measurement should be added between parentheses. Vertical lines should not be used to separate columns.

Illustrations

1. All illustrations (line drawings and photographs) should be submitted separately unmounted and not folded.

2. Illustrations should be numbered with Arabic numerals according to their sequence in the text. References should be made in the text to each illustration.

3. Each illustration should be identified on the reverse side (or, in the case of line drawings, on the lower front side) by its number and the name of the author. An indication of the top of the illustration is required in photographs and other cases where doubt can arise.

4. Illustrations should be designed with the format of the page of the journal in mind. Illustrations and lettering should be of such a size as to allow a photographic reduction of 50% without becoming illegible. Explanations should preferably be given in the typewritten legend. Drawn text in the illustrations should be kept to a minimum.

5. If scales are required, use bar scales on the illustration itself instead of numerical magnification factors.

6. Each illustration should have a legend. The legends to all illustrations should be typed together on a separate sheet at the end of the manuscript.

7. Photographs are only acceptable if they have good contrast and intensity. Sharp and glossy copies are required. Reproductions of photographs already printed cannot be accepted.

8. Colour illustrations can only be included, if the cost of reproduction is paid for by the author or a sponsor.

References

1. All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names are exactly the same in the text and in the list of references. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct text citation.

2. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned. In the text they should be cited with Arabic numerals between square brackets. For listing references, follow the JAMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. List all authors/editors but if there are more than six, list the first six plus et al.

3. This journal should be cited as Auris Nasus Larynx.

4. Manuscripts accepted for publication not yet published should be referred to as "in press." Manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted should be referred to as "unpublished data."

Proofs

One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding author as given on the title page of the manuscript. Only typesetters' errors may be corrected; no changes in or additions to, the edited manuscript will be allowed.

Offprints

Fifty offprints of each article will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered by the authors. An order form containing price quotations will be sent to the corresponding author.
