Instructions to Authors
The journal "Pis'ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal" publishes papers on all issues of modern astronomy and astrophysics of current interest containing as yet unpublished results that need rapid publicationю Studies that refer to new, rapidly developing fields of astronomy and space astrophysics are considered as a priority. For details on the orientation of the Journal, see the introductory article published in its first issue of 1994 (vol. 20, p. 3).
The Journal is translated into English by the International Academic Publishing Company "Nauka" (IAPC "Nauka"). The English version of the Journal comes out simultaneously with its Russian version under the title "Astronomy Letters" and is distributed abroad by the American Institute of Physics.
General Requirements. The total length of manuscripts should not exceed 25 typewritten pages (including tables and figures). It may be increased only in exceptional cases with permission of the Editorial Board. Regardless of its length, the text of the paper should be as concise and clear as possible and carefully edited. The abstract should contain the main results, rather than a list of problems to be considered in the paper, and should not repeat the title.
The paper should give a clear idea of the objectives of the study, the techniques used, and the results obtained. Jargon expressions, terminology, and abbreviations that are used only by a small group of experts should be avoided. In particular, proprietary alphanumeric designations of telescopes, instruments, projects should be avoided, instead give their full names and main characteristics, if necessary. Papers must not be overloaded with formulas, and the results must not be duplicated in tables and figures. Large tables (more than three typewritten pages) can be published in electronic form only (see below).
Submission of Manuscripts. The papers prepared by Russian or foreign authors should be sent to the Editorial Office whose address is: 117864 (zip code). Moscow, Profsoyuznaya ul., IAPC "Nauka". Editorial Office of "Pis'ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal". The office phone and fax numbers are (095) 334-76-80 and (095) 333-53-77, respectively, e-mail address is pazh@hea.iki.rssi.ru, and WWW address is http://hea.iki.rssi.ru/pazh.
The manuscript should be signed by all authors. The address, the first, middle, and last names of the author that is responsible for communication with the Editorial Office, his (her) phone number (office and home), fax number, and e-mail address should be appended to it. It is desirable to submit articles that are based on the studies performed in institutions with a directive from these institutions.
By sending the manuscript of the paper to the Editorial Office, the authors transfer their rights to its publication in Russian and in English translation to the Founders and the Editorial Board of the Journal, while reserving all the remaining rights of ownership of this article. The authors are requested to append the Copyright Agreement to their manuscript in the following form:
A G R E E M E N T on the transfer of copyright |
|
We, the undersigned,the authors of the manuscript ..., transfer the right to publish this manuscript in Russian and in English translation to the Founders and the Editorial Board of the journal 'Pis'ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal". We confirm that this publication does not violate the copyright of other persons and organizations.
Signatures of the authors ... ( last, first, middle names, date) |
The papers of foreign authors submitted in English are translated into Russian in the IAPC "Nauka". Authors from the Commonwealth of Independent States submit their papers in Russian. An author's translation may be appended to the Russian versionб but the Editorial Office does not guarantee that this translation will be completely or partially used in the publication of the English version of the Journal. Authors should address their questions of using such a translation, its appraisal, and payment directly to the IAPC "Nauka" by phone: (095) 334-74-20 (Gorelik Mikhail Efimovich).
Preparation of Manuscripts. Papers are submitted in two typewritten (or keyed-in) double-spaced single-sided copies printed in a standard (12 pt) font. Margins of 25-30 mm should be left on the left side, at the top and at the bottom of the printed copy. The pages of manuscripts and their tables and figures should be numbered individually.
The title page of a manuscript should contain: its title, the initials and surname of each co-author (separated by a comma), the full name of the institution in which the study was carried out, and an abstract (~ 150-200 words). If the study was performed in different institutions, then, after the surname of each co-author, a numerical reference to the institution where he or she works is given. The list of institutions is provided after the surnames of all co-authors. The main text should begin with the second page of the manuscript. It is recommended to divide the paper into sections, begin it with an introduction in which the problem is formulated, and complete it with a summary of the main results.
The text of the paper should be carefully edited. The number of corrections should not exceed 2 or 3 symbols per page. One of the submitted copies of the paper should be the first (clean) copy with a clear mark-up of literal designations and clearly written formulas.
Figures. The paper should not be overloaded with figures. If there are several related figures, they should be arranged rationally and economically. Figures and photographs should be submitted separately in two copies with sizes no smaller than 5 × 6 cm, but no larger than 18 × 24 cm. They should not be pasted (or inserted by means of a computer) in the text of the manuscript. The quality of figures should be high enough to reproduce them in the Journal in the form presented by the authors.
Literature. References to the cited literature in the text contain the surname of the author and year of publication (with addition of a letter a, b, c, ... if several publications of the given author are cited for this year). In the case of two authors both the surnames are provided, in the case of three and more co-authors - only the first surname is provided with addition of "et al."
The cited literature is given under the heading "References" at the end of the paper in alphabetical order (see the most recent published issues of the Journal) without sequential numbers. References contain the surnames of all co-authors and their initials separated by a comma. These are followed by the journal abbreviation in the system of abbreviations used in "Pis'ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal", year of publication, volume, and first page, all separated by a comma. For books, the surname and initials of the author(s) or the editor, if this is a collected volume, the full title of the book, publisher, and year are provided.
The following examples illustrate the above rules for cited literature:

Tables. Since 1997, the Journal has been publishing large tables (more then three typewritten pages in length) in electronic form only and small tables both in printed and electronic form. The electronic versions of tables can be accessed via the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center (CDS) or its Russian branch - the Astronomical Data Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). In CDS, the tables are stored in files. They are accessible from any computer connected to Internet and can be downloaded via anonymous ftp or WWW.
ftp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/pub/cats/J (ftp cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr, cd /pub/cats/J) http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cats/J.htx
Under the agreement with CDS, the Astronomical Data Center of RAS collects tables that have been published or are being published in Russian astronomical journals and then send them to CDS after an examination. If tables with observational or computed data take up considerable space in the paper, the authors should prepare their electronic (ASCII) versions and send them to the Editorial Office of the Journal on a floppy disk or by e-mail:pazh@hea.iki.rssi.ru. In any case, two printed copies of the tables must be supplied (for evaluation) when submitting the paper.
Detailed instructions on how to prepare tables in the CDS format can be found at the following ftp and WWW addresses:
ftp://hea.iki.rssi.ru/pub/pazh/instrelp.txt ftp://hea.iki.rssi.ru/pub/pazh/instrelp.ps.Z http://hea.iki.rssi.ru/pazh
For explanations and help, contact Avedisova Veta Sergeevna at the Astronomical Data Center of RAS in the Institute of Astronomy of RAS, her e-mail address is veta@inasan.rssi.ru. General instructions on table preparation can also be obtained directly in CDS by ftp:
ftp://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/pub/cats/doc.dvi ftp://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/pub/cats/doc.ps.Z.
Evaluation. Papers submitted to "Pis'ma v Astronomicheskii Zhurnal" are normally sent to two referees for a review; in some cases, an additional evaluation is necessary. When authors receive the reports of referees which point to the need for a revision of the paper, the reply should be given to the Editorial Office within three months. Otherwise, the paper is assumed to be taken back by the author. If a paper is rejected, the Editorial Office keeps one copy.
An Electronic Version of Papers. In addition to the traditional (printed) version of the paper, the author may submit its electronic version to the Editorial Office, which speeds up the preparation of the paper to publication. The electronic version should be completely identical to the printed one and should consist of a file with the paper's text and files with illustrations. An inventory (file form is permitted) in which the disk format, operating system, text editor, list of files, title of the journal and the paper, and surnames and initials of the author(s) are specified should be appended to the set of files. The files are submitted on 3,5'' (or 5'') floppy disks, by e-mail, or via ftp. The floppies should be formatted for an IBM PC. When sending the files by e-mail or via ftp, the authors should first make arrangements with the Editorial Office and then with the computer service of the IAPC "Nauka" by phone: (095) 333-93-02 (e-mail address is egur@maik.ru).
It is desirable to submit the main text of the paper in a text-only format; the lines in a paragraph should not be separated by a Carriage Return (Enter key). In some cases, the text may be submitted in Microsoft-Word 2.7 format or TeX format with an indication of the subset and version of the publishing system.
When preparing graphical files, adhere to the following rules:
-
all figures and illustrations must be black-and-white;
-
TIFF is preferred for gray-scale photographs and line figures, although JPEG and GIF may also be used;
-
it is desirable to use EPS for vector figures and diagrams (figures prepared with vector-graphics programs);
-
the resolution for scanned line figures should be no lower than 600 dpi (dots per inch);
-
the resolution for scanned gray-scale figures and photographs should not be lower than 200 dpi;
-
each file should contain only one figure;
-
the files must be named so that it would be clear to which paper it refers and what figure (in order) they contain.
