Basic information
Official journal of the Academia Brasileira de Neurologia - ABNEURO since 1970, the Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria are edited and published by the Associa玢o Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria Dr. Oswaldo Lange, an non-profit association. The journal is published quarterly on March, June, September, and December absolutely on time since its foundation in 1943 by Dr. Oswaldo Lange, who was the executive editor up to 1986. Its aim is to publish the results of clinical and experimental researches in neurology and related areas.
It is a member of the World Federation of Neurology.
The abbreviated title of the journal is Arq. Neuropsiquiatr., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips.

Instructions to Authors
Aim and editorial policy
The journal Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria publishes the results of clinical and experimental researches in neurology and related areas. Authors should submit articles for publication in Portuguese, English or Spanish that are original and concise.
Journal's Editorial Board reserves the right to: consult specialists to evaluate each article (peer review); suggest changes to enhance article content; adopt changes to increase the structure, comprehensibility and language of the text; and reject articles. Authors submitting an article do so on the understanding that the acceptance of their articles imply that they have not previously been published, and that they are not being considered for publication elsewhere.
Publication will preferably follow chronological order. Typographical proofs are provided in special cases. Offprints are provided upon authors' request, who will be charged their cost. Authors are solely responsible for published articles.
All articles should be sent to the Executive editor, and follow the journal rules for preparation of originals.
Preparation of originals
The journal Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria adopts the editorial standards of the ICMJE, International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE. Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. N Engl J Med 1997;336:309-315), following the version N Engl J Med 1997;336:316. Originals should be submitted in triplicate (pages should contain 30 lines in double space), and should present:
presentation abstracts and keywords text bibliographical references tables illustrations
Presentation - Title of the work (in Portuguese or Spanish and in English): should be concise and precise, containing enough information for cataloguing. Authors: name and surname (the latter should appear in the preferred form with reference to indexing). Footnote: name of the institution where the study was carried out, title and position of the authors; full address for correspondence.
Abstract - should not exceed 150 words, and contain the following structured information: study objective, method, results, conclusion.
Keywords: should follow the Abstract.
Text - should not exceed 10 pages, containing: introduction and objective; method (methodology); results; discussion (and conclusions); acknowledgements. Data presented in tables and illustrations should not be repeated in the text.
Tables - should be presented in separate pages, not exceeding 5. Each table should contain its order number, title and caption. Tables should not include vertical or horizontal lines.
Illustrations - should be presented in separate pages, not exceeding 3 graphics or pictures, and containing captions. Pictures: should be in black and white; indicate details using arrows, numbers or letters; should be marked on the back with the order number, author's name, article's title, and an arrow pointing to the top. Reproductions of published illustrations should be accompanied by the respective authorization from their authors and publishers. Coloured illustrations may be published, but authors will be charged for their cost, as well as for the costs of all exceeding tables and illustrations.
References - should not exceed 30 items, and be limited to the article's essential bibliography. References should be consecutively numbered as they appear in the text. References style is that of the Index Medicus. When there are up to six authors, all their names should be cited; when there are seven or more authors, only the first three should be cited, followed by "et al.":
Articles: Authors. Article's title. Journal's title year;volume:first page-last page. Books: Authors or editors. Book's title. Edition, if different from the first. Tranlators, if applicable. Place of publication: publisher, year: first page-last page. Chapters in books: Authors. Chapter's title. Book's editors followed by all other data, in accordance with the prior item. Abstracts: Authors. Title, followed by (Abstr). Journal's title year;volume:first page-last page. When not published in a journal: Publication's title. Place of publication: publisher, year: first page-last page. Personal communications should only be mentioned in the text, within parentheses. Authors should consult and follow the most recent number of the Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria. Responsibility for the accuracy of the bibliographical references lies entirely with the authors.
