Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission
We will accept hard copy or electronic submissions.
1. Hard copy submissions should consist of three copies of the manuscript and illustrations mailed to the Managing Editor.
2. Electronic submission is encouraged and will expedite the review process. We prefer a single pdf file that includes text, tables, and figures. The pdf file will be sent to reviewers. Electronic files may be (1) e-mailed to the Managing Editor at oehring@colorado edu, or (2) sent via regular mail on a CD, floppy disk, or zip disk to the Managing Editor, Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, 450 UCB, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 80309-0450, U.S.A..
One hard copy should also be sent for reference; the hard copy may arrive later than the electronic copy when e-mail is used. If a pdf file is not possible, consult the Managing Editor about to see what other formats may be acceptable. FTP access is available for very large files.
For both types of submissions, current issues of the journal should be used as a guide to style and layout. Pages of the manuscript should be numbered consecutively throughout, assembling the various parts of the paper in the order of the notes given below. The manuscript, including the references, must be typed, double-spaced with wide margins on a standard-sized page. The maximum length of a paper, including references, should generally be about 6000 words.
The corresponding author抯 mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address should be provided in the cover letter. Any questions regarding manuscript submission should be directed to the Managing Editor: (303) 492-3765 or oehring@colorado.edu.
Authors submitting manuscripts do so on the understanding that the work has not been previously published and, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, that the copyright will be transferred to the Regents of the University of Colorado. Copyright transfer forms will be sent to the author if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication.
Title, author name(s), and complete addresses appear on the first page.
Abstracts not exceeding 200 words accompany all manuscripts.
Text. Format and style of sections and headings should follow current issues of the journal, using bold and italics to distinguish levels of heads in the style used in the journal. A word-processing program抯 搒tyle?functions should not be used to designate subheadings; all text should be 搉ormal?style. Words and letters to appear in italics should be set in italics or underlined. Footnotes should be avoided. Tables and figures must be referred to in the text in numerical order. The metric system should be used, preferably Syst鑝e International d扷nites (SI). Double-line formulas are not encouraged in the body of the text; a solidus or negative exponent should be used. Equations should be numbered consecutively through the text. For general matters of style refer to The Chicago Manual of Style (14th ed.) (1993, Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press) and Scientific Style and Format (6th ed.) (1994, Cambridge and New York: Cambridge University Press for Council of Biology Editors).
References. The format of current issues should be used. The name of a journal or book should be italicized or underlined. Spell out all journal and other serial titles. The editor(s) of a collective work should be given. A paper having more than two authors should be referred to in the text as, e.g., Smith et al., but all the authors?names should appear in the list of references. All references should be carefully checked for accuracy before submitting the manuscript. When a program such as Endnote is used, field codes should be removed from references citations and lists.
Appendices. Include lengthy statistical data subordinate to the text. Extensive tabular material may be prepared for camera-ready reproduction.
Tables are separated from text. They should be designed to fit onto a page of the journal. Complex or extensive tables may be prepared for camera-ready reproduction following the format used in the journal.
Figure captions. All figure captions should be numbered corresponding to the figures and typed together on one or more sheets in the style of current issues.
Illustrations. Line drawings and photographs are referred to as Figures. All illustrations should carry the author's names and figure number; 搕op?should be indicated. Figures should be planned with the journal page dimensions in mind (1 column?0 picas or 8.5 cm; 1.5 column?0 picas or 12.5 cm; 2 columns?1.5 picas or 17.5 cm; depth 54 picas or 22.75 cm, allowing space for the caption). Maps and diagrams should be submitted completely ready for reproduction. One camera-ready print at publication size (in addition to two review copies) is welcomed. Maps must meet the standards used in current issues of the journal; a scale bar and latitude and longitude generally are needed. No letter or symbol should be less than 1 mm in height after reduction. Color illustrations can be printed if the entire cost is covered by the author; contact the Managing Editor for details.
Data depository. Exceptionally lengthy supporting data may be deposited at the editorial office to be made available on request.
Proofs. Page proofs are sent to authors via e-mail as pdf files. Pdf files of page proofs may not be reproduced or distributed.
Page Charges. Full or partial payment of $80 per page will be charged to authors whose institutions or research grants are able to pay page charges. Ability to pay these charges is not considered a condition for publication, but any contribution toward cost of publication is welcomed.
Reprints. A price schedule for reprints will be sent to the corresponding author with page proofs. Please note that authors who pay full page charges receive fifty reprints at no cost.
Subscription. Authors, who are not already subscribers, will be asked to subscribe to the journal for the year (volume) in which their paper appears.
