Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be voluntary contributions submitted for the exclusive use of the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing.
The purpose of the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing is to disseminate knowledge to guide practitioners of psychiatric and mental health nursing. The Archives of Psychiatric Nursing considers psychiatric and mental health nursing in its broadest perspective, including theory, practice, education, research, and policy applications related to all ages, special populations, settings, mental health disciplines, and both the public and private sectors. The Archives of Psychiatric Nursing is a medium for clinician-scholars to provide theoretical linkages among diverse areas of practice. Manuscripts are sought and published that will inform current practice and shape public policy for the delivery of psychiatric and mental health nursing services. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Form
Manuscripts should be printed on a high-quality printer, double spaced, with one and one-half inch margins. Two face sheets should be included. One face sheet should carry the title of the manuscript, the name and address of the author(s), institution affiliations, and reprint address. The other face sheet should carry only the title, with no identifying author information, for use as the only face sheet during review. Manuscripts should not exceed 16 pages (4,000 words), exclusive of references. Line drawings or other illustrations must be camera-ready copy; photocopies are not acceptable. Photographs, if used, must be 5 × 7 glossy black-and-white prints.
Manuscripts must be submitted on a disk, preferably in Microsoft Word. A double-spaced hard copy version of the final manuscript, free of hand-written alterations, must accompany the disk. All components of the manuscript must appear within a single electronic file: references, figure legends, and tables must appear at the end of the manuscript. Please refrain from using end notes as references or automatic list numbering because these features are lost in conversion: simply type the reference number in parentheses in the text and type the reference list. Formatting, such as Greek letters, italics, super- and subscripts, may be used: the coding scheme for such elements must be consistent throughout.
Authors are responsible for applying for permission for both print and electronic rights for all borrowed materials and are responsible for paying any fees related to the applications of these permissions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Style
The fourth edition of the American Psychological Association Publication Manual (1994) provides the format for text and references. Titles should be short. Abbreviations should be spelled out for the first time they are used. Symbols, other than standard statistical symbols, should be identified the first time they are used. An abstract, not to exceed 100 words, should be included as a separate page. Tables and figures should be typed or drawn on one page and relative placement should be noted in the text. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Procedure
Manuscripts are reviewed by an editor and at least two additional reviewers; decisions for publication are made on the basis of these reviews. No manuscript will be returned to the author(s). Accepted manuscripts become the property of the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. The Archives of Psychiatric Nursing reserves the right to edit all manuscripts for its style and space requirements and for the purpose of clarity. The Editor of the Archives of Psychiatric Nursing will determine in which volume and issue accepted manuscripts will appear. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for reproducing copyrighted materials and for sending a copy of that permission to the publisher before publication. Authors will receive proofs and are responsible for proofreading and checking the accuracy of material as it appears in edited copy.
Four copies of the manuscript; four camera-ready copies of each illustration and a diskette of the final manuscript should be sent to Judith B. Krauss, Editor, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, Yale University School of Nursing, PO Box 9740, New Haven, CT 06536-0740. Refer style questions to the production editor at W.B. Saunders, (215) 235-1909.
