Contributions may be published as: 1. Original articles. 2. Review articles (by invitation only). 3. Brief reports and special reports. 4. Abstracts of presentations at society meetings. 5. Other reports, at the discretion of the editorial board, e.g. from symposia of interest to our readers. 6. Supplements (see below).
SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS the Submission Form (Microsoft Word format)
Manuscripts should be sent with a submission form, ready for printing, to the Editor-in-chief, at the following address:
J鴕gen Rygaard MD Editor-in-chief APMIS Bartholin Instituttet Kommunehospitalet DK-1399 Copenhagen K Denmark.
Four copies of the manuscript plus three copies of the original figures must be submitted. A computer disk containing an exact copy of the manuscript with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG) should accompany the revised version of the manuscript, and the word processing system should be stated
The editorial board accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to manuscripts
The author alone is responsible for the views expressed in the article.
Language. Manuscripts should be submitted in English. Specify in the covering letter the name and address of the translator or the reviser, and in particular whether the translator and/or reviser also possesses professional knowledge of the subject
Arrangement of manuscripts. The manuscript should include: 1. Title page. 2. Summary. 3. Text. 4. References. 5. Tables and figures, if any
1. Title page. The title page should contain: a. A brief and concise title. Subtitles are to be preferred to long explanatory main titles. b. Name(s) of the author(s). c. Name(s) of the academic institution(s) or department(s) where the work was carried out, as well as the city and country. Telephone and fax numbers, and E-mail address. d. A running head of no more than 40 characters.
2. Summary. The summary should be typed on a separate sheet, which should include: a. The author's(s') name(s) and initials, followed by the full title of the paper. b. The summary itself. c. Key words. d. Name and address for correspondence. The summary should be as brief as possible and not exceed 200 words. It should present the aim, experimental design, main results and major conclusions.
3. Text.
* Introduction. This should state the reasons for initiating the study, and should present the problem briefly and concisely.
* Materials and methods. The materials and methods used should be described. The description must be brief and concise, but should include sufficient details to enable others to repeat the work. If a method has been described previously, bibliographical reference will suffice. Give a detailed description of control studies and experiments. Histological descriptions, reports of operations and autopsy findings should be condensed to include only relevant data.
* Results. The results obtained should be given in a brief and concise form. Reference should be made in the text to all tables and figures. The words Table and Figure must start with capital letters (e.g. Table 2, Fig. 3). The position for tables and figures must be indicated in the left-hand margin. The methods on which any statistical evaluation is based should be stated.
* Discussion (and Conclusion). The author's own results should be discussed and not just recapitulated. The results should be reviewed in relation to other works on the subject. Here a detailed analysis of previous literature would be appropriate. Unsolved problems or controversial results should be mentioned, but hypotheses should not be brought forward unless founded on facts in the text. The discussion may lead to a conclusion.
* Acknowledgements. Immediately after the text itself, general acknowledgements of help and support may be mentioned, e.g. thanks to foundations, other institutions or laboratory technicians. Personal thanks should not exceed 50 words.
4. References. References should be listed in the order of citation in the text (not alphabetically) and should follow the Vancouver system. Within the text, brackets (1), (2), (3-5) etc. should be used. It is recommended that authors use MEDLINE in conjunction with e.g. Reference Manager/EndNote when compiling their references.
Examples:
1. Standard journal article Vega KJ, Pina I, Krevsky B. Heart transplantation is associated with an increased risk for pancreatobiliary disease. Ann Intern Med 1996;124:980-3.
2.More than six authors Parkin DM, Clayton D, Black RJ, Masuyer E, Friedl HP, Ivanos E, et al. Childhood leukaemia in Europe after Chernobyl: 5 year follow-up. Br J Cancer 1996;73:1006-12.
3.Organization as author The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. Clinical exercise stress testing. Safety and performance guidelines. Med J Aust 1996;164:282-4.
4. No author given Cancer in South Africa (editorial). S Afr Med J 1994;84:15.
5. Chapter in a book Hageman I, Buschard K. Diabetic animal models. In: Svendsen P, Hau J, editors. Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science. Boca Raton: CRC Press, 1994:103-23.
5. Tables and figures. Both tables and illustrations should be numbered with arabic numerals. Tables should be typed on separate sheets, clearly marked with the author's name and the title of the paper, numbered consecutively with arabic numerals and inserted after the text pages. All tables must have brief and concise headings. Explanations may be given below the table.
Figures (drawings, photographs, plotter prints, etc.). The figures should not be too large. Do not include more illustrations than are absolutely necessary for proper documentation. Indicate author's name and title of paper on the back of the illustrations in soft pencil. The figures should be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals. Each figure should have an adequate legend. The legends should be typed on separate sheets, indicating figure number, author's name and title of paper.
Photographs: Should be glossy and in black and white or high quality colour prints. Any defects or scratches in the negative should be retouched. On the back of the photographs, indicate top and bottom. In the legend to each individual photograph state degree of magnification and staining method used, if any. Photographs should be submitted in separate envelopes. They should, if possible, be of exactly the same column width (76.5 mm) or page width (160 mm) as that used in APMIS. This will reduce costs of reproduction. If several photographs are to be included in the same paper, they should, if possible, be mounted in sets on cardboard by means of photo glue. There must not be any space between the photographs. Such sets should likewise have exactly the same column width or page width as that used in the journal. The maximum height permissible is 225 mm, normally including space for the legend.
X-ray films: must be submitted as positive prints of the original film.
Colour illustrations. Diapositives size 24-36 mm or larger or high quality colour prints are reproduced free of charge if the editor agrees that colour reproduction is essential.
Number of printed pages: Generally, the text must not exceed 6 printed pages, including the list of references. It will normally be possible to include up to 5 additional printed pages of tables and illustrations. The editorial board reserves the right to condense the documentary material. In APMIS a standard page contains approximately 4800 units and, in petit, approximately 6200 units. If manuscripts exceed this standard format, a page charge of DKK 1000 per additional printed page may be levied at the discretion of the editor.
Abbreviations and symbols. Avoid the abbreviation of ordinary words. If a long term appears often, the author may choose an abbreviation and explain this at its first occurrence. Avoid as far as possible unusual abbreviations. If such abbreviations are used, e.g. in tables, an explanation must be given in a footnote. There is no full stop after abbreviated units of measurement.
List of abbreviations: See Chemical Abstracts. American Chemical Society, Washington DC, latest edition, and Units, Symbols and Abbreviations. The Royal Society of Medicine, London (Ellis G, Editor), latest edition.
Chemical preparations: Commercial names, popular terms and abbreviations should not be used unless preceded by the proper chemical designation (e.g. according to Merck's Index). Any of these terms can then be used. Commercial names, if required, followed by registered name ? must be capitalized.
Latin binominals, which are to be underlined, should be used in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria, Virology, and the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
Special articles. 1. Brief reports on essential findings can be published in about 8 weeks. The maximum number of pages allowed is 2 printed pages. One table will be accepted, but preferably no figures or photographs; should these be desired, publication may be delayed. 2. Case reports will be accepted only if they serve to record rare findings, or if new findings may contribute to the clarification of rare diseases. Such reports must be as brief as possible, stating reasons for publication, as well as all relevant observations, including laboratory recordings, autopsy results and microscopic findings. A case report should not exceed 5 typed A4 pages, corresponding to 2-3 printed pages in APMIS. Illustrations will only be accepted if considered indispensable.
Proof reading. It is recommended that international proof correction symbols be used. Printer's errors should be marked in red, alterations of the manuscript in blue. The proofs will be sent to the author at the address given on the summary page. Alterations to the accepted manuscript will be made at the author's expense. The charges are calculated according to the actual cost.
Offprints. Order forms for offprints are sent to the author together with the galley proofs. Fifty reprints, without covers, are provided free of charge.
Supplements. Articles exceeding 30 printed pages, as well as theses, monographs, etc. may be published as supplements. The manuscript must be accepted by the editorial board. The author bears the full cost. Further information, preprinted four colour covers and colour separated films are available from the editorial office.
