About the journal
Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (AISM) provides an international forum for open communication among statisticians and researchers working with the common purpose of advancing human knowledge through the development of the science and technology of statistics. AISM will publish broadest possible coverage of statistical papers of the highest quality. The emphasis will be placed on the publication of papers related to: (a) the establishment of new areas of application; (b) the development of new procedures and algorithms; (c) the development of unifying theories; (d) the analysis and improvement of existing procedures and theories; and the communication of empirical findings supported by real data. In addition to papers by professional statisticians, contributions are also published by authors working in various fields of application. Authors discussing applications are encouraged to contribute a complete set of data used in their papers to the AISM Data Library. The Institute of Statistical Mathematics will distribute it upon request from readers (see p. 405 and 606, Vol. 43, No. 3, 1991). The final objective of AISM is to contribute to the advancement of statistics as the science of human handling of information to cope with uncertainties. Special emphasis will thus be placed on the publication of papers that will eventually lead to significant improvements in the practice of statistics.

Instructions to Authors
The editors encourage prospective authors to submit manuscripts within the scope of Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. To qualify for publication, papers must be previously unpublished and not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Accepted language is English. All manuscripts will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Rejected manuscripts will not normally be returned to authors. The copyright of accepted papers is ascribed to the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. Submissions to the journal may be sent to:
Editorial Office AISM, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics 4-6-7 Minami-Azabu, Minato-ku Tokyo 106-8569 Japan
Manuscripts may be submitted by the authors in two ways: (1) four copies of each paper may be sent to the Editorial Office, (2) four copies of each paper may be sent to an Editor. In the latter case, one copy should be sent simultaneously to the Editorial Office with the copy of the forwarding letter to the Editor in transmitting the paper. In both cases, the date of receipt of the paper is the one on which the paper with the covering letter is received by the Editorial Office.
Manuscripts should be produced by using typewriters or wordprocessors in double- or triple- spacing on one side of A4 size or of US Letter size good quality white paper with wide margins. Use of electric typewriters with fresh carbon ribbons or good quality printers are preferable. The manuscript should be arranged as follows: (1) title page, (2) abstract, (3) text, (4) acknowledgements (when appropriate), (5) appendices (if necessary), (6) references, (7) tables, (8) figure captions which must be typed on a separate page and (9) figures. All pages should be numbered. The maximum length of the manuscript should normally not exceed 30 pages. Moderately pitched characters (e.g. 10-12 characters per horizontal inch) or reasonably sized fonts should be used in typewriting or wordprocessing respectively. The Editors reserve the rights to refuse receiving manuscripts that have excessive lengths or have overstuffed pages with immoderately small characters or fonts.
Page proofs will be supplied by the printer directly to the corresponding author. These should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Otherwise the paper might be published without the author憇 proofreading. No substantial changes by the author will be accepted at this stage of proofreading, except where advance permission has been obtained from the Editorial Office. Costs arising from changes in proof, other than of printers?errors will be charged to the authors.
There will be no page charge. Thirty reprints of each paper will be supplied free of charge. Additional copies may be purchased from the publisher and should be ordered when the proofs are returned. Orders after publication cannot be filled at regular reprint prices.
