About the journal
|
New evidence from many branches of medicine constantly demonstrates the importance of nutrition on various disease processes. While considerable progress has already been made towards the prevention of disorders like hypertension and coronary heart disease, the search for reliable dietary guidelines continues. The editors of this journal show their dedication to this search by carefully selecting basic and clinical reports offering new information relating to human nutrition and metabolic diseases including their molecular genetics. Papers present original findings dealing with problems such as the consequences of specific diets and dietary supplements, nutritional factors in the etiology of metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, and the epidemiological association between dietary habits and disease incidence |

Instructions to Authors
Submission
Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate (with three sets of illustrations of which one is an original; final high-resolution pictures need only be sent after acceptance of the paper) together with a soft copy on disc. The manuscript should match the electronic file exactly. For details please refer to Electronic Submission. Editorial work and copy-editing will be executed from the electronic version of your manuscript.

 Conditions
All manuscripts are subject to editorial review.
Manuscripts are received with the explicit understanding that they are not under simultaneous consideration by any other publication. Submission of an article for publication implies the transfer of the copyright from the author to the publisher upon acceptance. Accepted papers become the permanent property of 慉nnals of Nutrition and Metabolism?and may not be reproduced by any means, in whole or in part, without the written consent of the publisher.
It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, etc. from other publications.

 Special Requirements
 1. Investigations Involving Human Subjects: 慉nnals of Nutrition and Metabolism?requires that investigations performed on human subjects have the prior approval of the institutional committee on human experimentation. Authors are required to submit a signed statement as to the date and details of the appropriate review. In countries where such mechanisms for approval do not exist, authors are required to submit a signed statement that the research was carried out in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. A similar assurance is required to document that animal experimentation was performed under appropriate circumstances.
 2. Statement for Authors Submitting Original Research or Case Reports: 慣he enclosed manuscript ... (Title) ... has been approved by me as well as by the responsible authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out. I certify that none of the material in this manuscript has been published previously in any form and that none of this material is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. This includes symposia and proceedings of meetings and preliminary publications of any kind except an abstract of 400 words or less.?(To be signed by all authors.)
 3. The undersigned also confirm that they qualify for (co-)authorship according to the 慤niform Requirements for Manuscripts?published in the guidelines of the 慖nternational Committee of Medical Journal Editors?in 1988 as follows: Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions to (a) conception and design, or analysis and interpretation of data; (b) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and (c) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions (a), (b), and (c) must all be met. Participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. General supervision of the research group is also not sufficient for authorship. Any part of an article critical to its main conclusions must be the responsibility of at least one author. Persons who have contributed intellectually to the article but whose contributions do not justify authorship may be named and their particular contribution described in the 慉cknowledgements? Such persons must give their permission to be named.

 Arrangement
Title page: The first page of each paper should indicate the title, the authors?names, the institute where the work was conducted, and a short title for use as running head. NB: Authors wishing to preserve the phonetic meaning of diacritics (PubMed reduces diacritics to their root characters) must spell their names accordingly when submitting manuscripts (e.g. M黮ler should be Mueller).
Full address: The exact postal address of the corresponding author complete with postal code must be given at the bottom of the title page. Please also supply phone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address.
Key words: For indexing purposes, a list of 3?0 key words in English is essential.
Abstract: Each paper needs an abstract of up to 200 words. It should be structured as follows: Background/Aims: What is the major problem that prompted the study? Methods: How was the study performed? Results: Most important findings? Conclusion: Most important conclusion?
Methods: The reader should be able to follow the methods by which the results were obtained, but there is no need for detailed descriptions unless of a genuine innovation.
Results: The results should be described precisely and must be separated from the discussion.
Discussion: The discussion should be confined to the interpretation of the results and should not consist of a repetition of them.
 Footnotes: Avoid footnotes.
Tables and illustrations: Tables and illustrations (both numbered in Arabic numerals) should be prepared on separate pages. Tables require a heading and figures a legend, also prepared on a separate page. For the reproduction of illustrations, only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives or photocopies cannot be used. Due to technical reasons, figures with a screen background should not be submitted. When possible, group several illustrations in one block for reproduction (max. size 180 x 223 mm) or provide crop marks. On the back of each illustration, indicate its number, the author's name, and 憈op?with a soft pencil. Electronically submitted b/w half-tone and color illustrations must have a final resolution of 300 dpi after scaling, line drawings one of 800?,200 dpi.

 Color Illustrations
Up to 6 color illustrations per page can now be integrated within the text at the reduced price of CHF 660.?/ USD 545.00 per page. Color illustrations are reproduced at the author's expense.

 References
In the text identify references by Arabic numerals [in square brackets]. Material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be noted as 憉npublished data?and not be included in the reference list. The list of references should include only those publications which are cited in the text. Do not alphabetize; number references in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. The surnames of the authors followed by initials should be given. There should be no punctuation other than a comma to separate the authors. Preferably, cite all authors. Abbreviate journal names according to the Index Medicus system. (Also see International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals. N Engl J Med 1997;336:309?15. www.icmje.org)
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) S. Karger Publishers supports DOIs as unique identifiers for articles. A DOI number will be printed on the title page of each article. DOIs can be useful in the future for identifying and citing articles published online without volume or issue information. More information can be found at www.doi.org

We welcome the electronic submission of manuscripts and illustrations.
Please note that you still have to send the required number of manuscript copies as stated in the 'Guidelines for Authors' of each journal, even though you submit your data electronically. This must also be observed with regard to illustrations, where originals/printout and copies are required.
The printout of your manuscript must be double-spaced and must match the file on disk exactly. In case of any discrepancies, we will consider the printed version as the final one.
Technical Information
 Disk Submission
Please store only data pertinent to the manuscript you are submitting. It is advisable to include your fonts (Macintosh users need to include both screen and printer fonts).
Important: Do not save your paper with illustrations integrated! It is of crucial importance that you remember to store all illustration data separately.
For text only, use:
- 3.5 inch disk
MS-Word format is preferred, Macintosh-OS format is acceptable For text and illustrations, use:
- 3.5 or 5.25 Magneto Optical Disc

It may be appropriate to compress extensive data. Please use ZIP format, which you can download from www.pkware.com; Macintosh users should go to http://www.maczipit.com.

 Data Description
Please always supply the following information with your data:
- the title of the journal or book for which it is submitted
- a short version of the paper's title
- your name, postal and e-mail address, fax and telephone number
- hard and software used, including the version
- the complete list of the file names
All file names should consist of 8 characters before the dot identifying the file and 3 characters after the dot identifying the application (FILENAME.APP).

 Text
 Software
The preferred word-processing package is MS-Word. Other commonly used PC text programs as well as ASCII formats are accepted.

 Revisions, Copy Editing
Please update your data when you revise subsequent to the reviewer's or editor's decision and mark revisions clearly as such.
All manuscripts accepted for publication by Karger are subject to copy editing. Changes introduced by the copy editor and / or questions will be marked in the manuscript/printout so please be sure to check the galleys against the manuscript.
The copy edited manuscript and your disk will be returned to you along with the galley proofs.

 Do's and Don'ts
Apart from the general rules on style and arrangement as set out in the 'Guidelines for Authors' please note the following:
- Please do not use any special page layout or worry about unsightly line and page breaks.
If you would like to see what your manuscript looks like with embedded tables and illustrations, remember that we need text and illustrations as separate files!
- Enter your text continuously flush left. Do not use hard returns ('enter') within a paragraph, only at its end.
- Do not justify.
- Do not use footer and header functions.
- Do not split words at the end of a line.
- Do not use indentations anywhere in your manuscript, including the references. Mark the beginning of a paragraph by inserting an extra blank line. Use a hard return ('enter') to mark the end of a paragraph.
- You may use the automatic page numbering function.
- Headings should be arranged left. Do not center headings, space them or set them in uppercase.
- Use the same style for headings of the same ranking throughout the text.
- You may use boldface and italics as well as sub- and superscript where appropriate.
- Use block letters (UPPERCASE) only for abbreviation. Do not s p a c e individual words for emphasis.
- Insert one -- and only one -- space after each punctuation mark, e.g. at the end of a sentence and with reference numbers, i.e. [22, 27, 35].
- Distinguish hyphen and dash as follows:
 |
| hyphen |
|
high-resolution |
| en-dash |
|
1890--1990 |
| em-dash |
|
the incident -- as responses showed -- was perceived... |
| minus sign |
|
at a temperature of --75?/TD> |
 |
- Use your word-processing program to insert Greek letters and mathematical symbols etc.

 Templates
In the near future we will be able to offer you user-friendly document templates for MS-Word Version 6.0 and higher.

 Tables
- Tables are part of the text. Place them at the end of the text file.
- A table consists of heading, head and body and, if necessary, footnotes. Use a line to separate the individual parts.
- Do not use spaces in tables, use the tabulator.
- Within tables format operation data (e.g. 15.1 ?7.23) on one line in the same column.
- Do not use boldface or screens in tables.

 Illustrations
 General Information
If your data does not correspond with the following guidelines it may be much more economical for us to use the original/print for traditional reproduction.
Always include originals/prints when submitting digital images in as many copies as indicated in the 'Guidelines to Authors'.
Important: Illustration data must be stored as separate files. Do not integrate your figures in your text.

 Legends
The legends to your figures are part of the text and should be listed at the end of your text file.

 Line Drawings
- Use a common program to generate drawings: CorelDraw for Windows, Freehand and Illustrator for Macintosh.
- When preparing your line drawing make sure the size of the drawing corresponds to its importance and complexity and that the size and weight of all elements are balanced.
- Keep in mind that it may have to be scaled down: Do not use 'hairlines', minute type or very fine details. Screens should be used sparingly. Fine background screens are not recommended as they do not scale down well.
- Please check all text elements very carefully to exclude typing errors and inconsistencies.
- We prefer line drawings in a standard format (TIF, EPS, WMF etc.). If this is not possible export them in their original format and include as much information as possible on the program you used.
- Save your line drawings as separate files, not embedded in the text.

 Black and White Half-Tone Images
- For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, Photoshop is recommended.
Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
- Export black and white half-tones as TIF or EPS format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
- Save the half tones as separate files, not embedded in the text.

 Color Illustrations
- For processing and retouching scanned half-tone images, Photoshop is recommended.
Please save the original scan as well as your processed version.
- Export black and white half-tones as TIF or EPS format, as close as possible to their anticipated size in print.
- Save the half tones as separate files, not embedded in the text.

 Scans
- Scanned line drawings must be digitalized with a resolution of at least 800, better 1000 dpi (dots per inch) after scaling.
- Scanned half-tone images should be digitalized with a final resolution of 300 dpi, a 12 bit grayscale accuracy and a density range of 2.8. Screen values must lie between 5% and 95%.
- Scanned color illustrations must be digitalized in RGB mode with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, a 32 bit accuracy and a density range of 2.8.
