About the journal

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., July 10, 1999 The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) announces free online availability of its monthly, peer-reviewed scientific journal "Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology."

The electronic version is free to all on the Internet at the site www.annallergy.org, through December 2000. Thereafter, access will be limited to subscriptions.

"Annals" online contains the full-text articles, including figures and tables, and will expand with each month's issue. Text is searchable by keyword, with hyperlinks to MEDLINE.

Archives are currently being built to include full-text articles online of back issues since January, 1997. Abstracts will be available from earlier publications.

Patient education "Advice From Your Allergist" articles are archived online on the following topics: rhinitis, insect sting allergies, urticaria, pregnancy with asthma and allergies, osteoporosis, long-acting bronchodilators, latex hypersensitivity, food allergies, headaches, house-dust allergies and pet allergies.

The web site provides information about the journal including instructions to authors, the Editorial Board and subscription information.

"Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology" received a top rating in a recent readership survey reported by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and Dataview Research Inc., scoring its usefulness and comparing it to other medical journals.

Availability of full-text articles on the Internet at no cost is made possible through a grant from Sepracor, Inc.

Additional information on the diagnosis and treatment of asthma and allergic disease is available on the ACAAI public web site (http://allergy.mcg.edu).

The ACAAI is a professional medical organization comprised of 4,000 qualified allergists-immunologists and related health care professionals. The College is dedicated to the clinical practice of allergy, asthma and immunology through education and research to promote the highest quality of patient care.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript Submission
Authors must prepare manuscripts in accordance with "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" (JAMA 1997;277:927-934). All tables, figure legends, and references, must be typewritten with double spacing.
Articles should not exceed 3000 words and should be accompanied by a structured abstract that does not exceed 250 words. Abstracts should be understandable without reference to the entire article.
To submit a manuscript, access via the Internet
www.annallergy.org. Click on "Submit article to annals." Only manuscripts submitted through this mean will be considered for review.
On the title page list authors, including full first names and abbreviated, highest academic degrees. Do not include designations for membership in societies or organizations. Include in a footnote the institutional affiliation and address for each author at the time of the study. Indicate the source of any financial support for the study. List the name and address of the author responsible for correspondence. Include an email address. If possible avoid internal references to the source of the manuscript. Copies should not carry the names of authors or institutions in the headers and footers or in the "Acknowledgment."

Review Articles
Annals accepts for consideration for publication detailed, critical reveiws of subjects relevant to clinical allergy and immunology. Reviews should not exceed 4000 words.
For review articles prepare a structured abstract of not more than 250 words under the following headings:

Objective: State the primary objective of the review, indicating whether the emphasis is on cause, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy, or prevention. Include any relevant information about the specific population, intervention, or outcome reviewed.
Data Sources: Summarize briefly the data sources, including time restrictions and exact indexing terms used for article retrieval from any bibliographic database and including restrictions to any specific language such as English or to human subjects. Possible sources include experts in the field, computerized databases, published indexes, conference proceedings, and references identified from bibliographies of relevant articles and books.
Study Selection: Describe criteria used to select studies for detailed review from those identified as relevant to the topic. Indicate the proportion of initially identified studies that met the selection criteria.
Results: Describe briefly the results.
Conclusions: State clearly and briefly the conclusions and their clinical applications.

Clinical Allergy-Immunology Rounds
We accept for consideration for publication reports of edifying cases with questions and answers about differential diagnosis and detailed discussions of diagnosis and pathogenesis.

Original Articles
Scientific articles should conform to the usual structure of abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables, and legends for figures. Each component should begin on a new page. Number the pages starting with the title page. The full name and address of the author responsible for correspondence should appear at the end of the list of references.

Structured Abstracts
For any report of original data from clinical or experimental investigations prepare a structured, introductory abstract of not more than 250 words under the following headings:

Background: Indicate briefly in a complete sentence or two the chief issue or problem that led to the study.
Objective: State briefly the purpose of the study.
Methods: Describe the design (randomized, double-blind, placebo control), subjects, setting (general community, private practice, hospital), interventions, and main outcome measures.
Results: Describe briefly the results with confidence intervals and statistical significance.
Conclusions: Indicate the most important conclusions.

These headings should be included in the abstract.

Style Guidelines
For guidance regarding grammar, punctuation, and scientific writing see the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th edition, Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins; 1998. Avoid using acronyms and abbreviations except for tests or procedures better known by their abbreviation than by the full term, such as VDRL. Abbreviate units of measurement only when they appear with numerals (" . . . measured in centimeters," but "87 cm"). Abbreviations may be used in figures and tables, but such abbreviations must be explained in the figure legend or a footnote to the table. Authors must express all measurements in Systeme International (SI) units, but may include these in parentheses after older conventional units if they desire. Use the degree Celsius for temperatures. Other exceptions are drug dosages, which should be expressed in metric mass units; blood pressure, which should be expressed as mm Hg; blood gas tensions, which should be expressed as mm Hg; and pH. Serum theophylline concentrations should be expressed as both mg/L and (in parentheses) µmol/L. Conversion equations should be supplied as footnotes to tables and should be included in legends to figures. Conversion tables are available in the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th edition, Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins; 1998.
Use generic names for drugs except when a specific trade preparation was used in a study or involved in an adverse reaction or when unique properties of the proprietary drug require its identification.

References
Number references in the order in which they are first cited in the text. Follow the reference style of the National Library of Medicine. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. List all authors when four or fewer. When more than four, list the first three and add et al.

Journal article:

Adams PC, Brown HL, Chang HC, et al. Management of anaphylaxis. Ann Allergy 1990;64:127-131.

Chapter in book:

Storm BC. Asthma. In: Thompson VC, Olson O, eds. Pulmonary pathophysiology. Baltimore: Williams & Wilkins, 1990:27-42.

Try to avoid using abstracts as references. Unpublished observations, including personal communications, may not be used as references except for written communications, which may be referenced within parentheses in the text with the permission of the cited person. Articles or books accepted for publication but not yet published may be included as references with the name of the journal or publisher and the addition of (in press).

Tables
Each table should be typewritten with double spacing on a separate page and numbered in order of citation in the text with arabic numerals. Each table should have a concise heading that makes it comprehensible without reference to the text of the article. Use horizontal lines only at the top and bottom of the table and between column headings and the body of the table. Use no vertical lines. Explain any nonstandard abbreviations in a footnote to the table.

Figures
Figures should be professionally drawn and photographed and supplied as glossy, 127 × 173 mm (5 × 7 inch) prints. Paste a label on the back of the print to indicate name of the author, title of the article, number of the figure, and top of the figure. Number figures in their order of citation in the text with arabic numerals. Do not write on the back of the figure or mount it on cardboard. Photographs of any identifiable people must be accompanied by written permission for their use. For further guidance in preparation of tables and figures, see Sly RM. How to present data for publication. Ann Allergy 1993;70:343-346.

Authorship
List as authors only those who meet all three of the following criteria:

(1) conception and design of the study or analysis and interpretation of the data
(2) preparation or critical revision of the manuscript
(3) approval of the final version of the manuscript

Authors may add on the title page a footnote to explain the order of authorship and the specific contribution of each author. Assistance of other participants in a study may be indicated as an acknowledgment if the authors have written permission from each person listed in the acknowledgment.
Upon request, the authors should provide the data on which the manuscript is based for examination by the editor or reviewers assigned by the editor. Authors are responsible for all statements, opinions, conclusions, and methods of presenting their data in articles submitted to the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology for possible publication. The views of authors as presented in their articles do not necessarily represent the opinions of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology editorial staff or the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology.

Copyright
All authors, except U.S. government employees whose work was done as a part of their official duties, must sign a transmittal letter that accompanies the manuscript and contains the following statement: "In consideration of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology reviewing and editing my (our) manuscript, the author(s) herewith transfers, assigns, or otherwise conveys all copyright ownership (print and all forms of digital formats) to the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology if and when it is published by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology."

Informed Consent
When reporting experiments on human subjects indicate whether informed consent was obtained and submit a copy of the minutes or letter of approval of the committee on human experimentation that reviewed and approved the investigation.

Manuscripts on Disk
We require disk submission of the FINAL, accepted version of a manuscript and request that the disk be sent within 1 week of acceptance.
To prepare the disk for submission to the Editorial Office:

  • Use a 3.5 inch virus-free disk
  • Fill out the "Electronic Editing" form sent to the corresponding author by the Editorial Office. After completion, return the "Electronic Editing" form with the disk to the Editorial Office. This form must accompany each disk.
  • Ensure that the disk file matches exactly the final copy of the manuscript version accepted for publication. Send 1 hard copy of manuscript with the disk to the Editorial Office.
  • Disks produced on Macintosh and PC-compatible computers are preferred, but those produced on Wang and UNIX operating systems can also be processed.
  • ASCII files are discouraged.

The Annals does not assume responsibility for errors in conversion of customized software, newly released software, or characters in an equation editor.

Proofs
Authors should return corrected page proofs with the edited manuscript and figures to Cadmus Journal Services within 48 hours or corrections may not be made. The address of Cadmus will be supplied with the proofs. Five alterations on the page proofs are allowed without cost to the author. Additional changes, not including printer errors, will be billed directly to the author at the current cost.

Reprints
Reprints may be ordered on forms provided when the page proof is sent to the author for proofreading and approval.

Letters to the Editor
Letters of opinion about articles published in the Annals and other current topics or short reports of clinical interest are accepted for consideration for publication. These should not exceed 400 words and should list no more than five references. There should be no tables or figures. Letters should be typewritten with double spacing throughout, including references. Letters to the editor express opinions solely of the writers and do not necessarily indicate views of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology editorial staff. The editor reserves the right to edit such letters and to use his discretion in their selection for publication.
