Instructions to Authors

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

The Annales de Chirurgie/Annals of Surgery publishes the following articles: editorials, original articles, current topics, clinical reports, technical notes, letters to the editor, and book reviews. Although the papers are mainly published in French, manuscripts submitted in English are equally welcome.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

The studies submitted for publication must conform to the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki*. Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published, or have simultaneously been submitted for publication to another journal. Four copies (one original version and the corresponding photocopy, and two other photocopies not bearing the authors? names) should be sent to the following address: Editorial Office, Annales de Chirurgie, Medical Department, Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier, 23, rue Linois, 75724 Paris cedex 15, France. A diskette should be included with the manuscript, or the text can be sent by e-mail at the time of mailing the documents to the following address: chirurgie@elsevier.fr.

A copyright transfer form is sent to the corresponding author with a receipt for the submitted article; this form should be filled in and signed by the principal author on behalf of all the other authors, and promptly returned to the publisher.

GENERAL PRESENTATION

The manuscript should be typed single-sided on A4 paper (210 297 mm), double-spaced, with a 4-cm margin on the left-hand side. Each A4 sheet contains about 250 words or 1 500 characters. The pages should be numbered consecutively, with a 5-cm margin on the left-hand side and 25 lines per page (an A4 sheet contains about 250 words or 1 500 characters). It should include the following:
the title page, consisting of: 1) a title in English and French; 2) the authors? names, i.e., the initial(s) of the first name(s), and the family name in each case; 3) the full postal address of the departments or laboratories to which the authors are affiliated, and a clear indication of which address applies to each author; 3) the full name, telephone and fax number; and e-mail address where applicable, of the corresponding author to whom all editorial material is to be sent (requests for corrections or revision of the manuscript; the galley proofs and reprint requests); 4) a short running title which will appear at the top of each page of the printed article (no more than 40 characters including spaces).

Summary and key words

Each article should include a summary in English and in French (résum´) of no more than 250 words, and a maximum of five key words in each language. For original articles, the summary should be set out as follows: aim; material and methods; results; conclusion.

TEXT

The maximum length of the different texts (including references) should be as follows:
- editorial: four pages;
- original article and current topics: 12 pages;
- clinical report and technical notes: four pages;
- letters to the editor: two pages.
The original articles should include the following sections: introduction, material and methods, results, discussion, conclusion.

REFERENCES

Original articles should contain no more than 30 references, and current topics no more than 50 references. Each citation in the text should correspond to a reference in the bibliography. All the references must be included in the text, and numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance in the text. The reference numbers should be placed in square brackets, and separated by a hyphen when there are three or more consecutive references (only the first and last reference numbers are retained), for example [1-4], or by commas when there are two consecutive numbers or non-consecutive numbers, for example [1, 4].
When authors? names are cited in the text, the following should be noted:
- when there is only one author or at most two authors, the one name or the two names may be included in the text (the family name only should be cited, without including the initials of the first name);
- when there are three or more authors, the name of the first author only should be retained, followed by the expression ?et al?.
- when there are up to six authors, all the names should be provided; when there are seven or more authors, only the first six names should be included, followed by a comma and the expression ?et al?. The journal abbreviations should conform to those cited in the Index Medicus (new series) National Library of Medicine. The reference list should conform to the ?Vancouver System? (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Fifth edition. N Engl J Med 1997; 336: 309-16.)

Tables

Each table should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. No photocopy reductions should be made. Tables are numbered in bold roman numerals, and referred to in the text together with their number in brackets. The title appears above the table, and any explanatory footnotes can be included below.

Figures

The figures should not reproduce the same information as that presented in the tables. Figures (diagrams, drawings, or photographs) should be numbered in arab numerals, and referred to in the text together with their number in brackets. Black and white photographs with sufficient contrast should be supplied on glossy paper. The figure legends should be typed on a separate sheet. No publication fees are charged for black and white figures; however, authors are charged for the reproduction of colour figures. If any partial or total reproduction of figures from a previously published document is to be included, the author must first secure the rights of reproduction for that material, and obtain written consent from the authors and publisher of the document(s) in question.

MANUSCRIPTS: GENERAL ANALYSIS

Presentation and style

The authors should ensure that the submitted texts are clearly witten, easily understood by a surgeon from another specialty, and that they are precise and concise. The English should be uncomplicated and correct, and medical jargon should be avoided. Abbreviations should be defined in the text; the first time they are included they should be preceded by their definition, and then used exclusively and not interchangeably with their definition. No abbreviations should be used in the title or in the summary. Abbreviations should be limited in number. Abbreviated units of measurement should conform to international standards (e.g., minute should be shortened to min, and not mn).

Electronic file

The following rules should be respected when preparing manuscripts on diskette:
- clearly label the diskette, indicating the file name, the operating system (e.g., Windows 98), and the software used (e.g., MS Word 97);
- the diskette should only contain the file(s) with the article accepted for publication, and the entire text (without the images) should be included in a single file;
- when entering the text via word processor, special functions should not be used, such as automatic insertion of characters, fields, footnotes, or images;
- the figures supplied on diskette must be accompanied by a high-quality paper copy; these should be saved in separate files in EPS or TIF format.

GALLEY PROOFS, REPRINTS AND REQUESTS FOR REPRODUCTION

The corresponding author receives the galley proofs and an order form for additional reprint requests, the first 25 reprints being free of charge.Changes in content are not allowed at galley proof stage. Only typographical errors can be corrected. The authors should ensure that the corrected proofs are returned to the publisher within 48 hours of reception of the documents, and publishing approval should be given with the written confirmation ?bon a tirer?. This particular instruction applies throughout the year. When article corrections are not submitted on time, the publisher reserves the right to publish the article without the written consent of the author. Once the article has been published, the author is considered to have transferred his rights to the publisher, and all requests for reproduction should therefore be sent to the latter.

* If necessary, the studies in question should be submitted either to an advisory committee for the protection of persons involved in biomedical research, or to an ethics committee. When a study has been submitted to one of these committees, this fact should be included in the text.
